Well, this is also a part of make in India. Russia has already lost the tracked artillery to the Koreans, and the BMP replacement with the FICV. The way things are going, they're going to lose the T72 replacement as well.

The crux of the matter is India losing on make-in-India, as for the Tanks. Which is a big ticket item.

The IA is at fault as well. There's a demand for jackets, carbines, etc. yet they themselves prolong the process.

So both, IA and GOI are at fault for not taking care of its own soldiers, yet issuing tall statements like fighting two front war?

Watch the FICV program, where several private firms are competing to replace the older Russian BMP2s. The T72 replacement will run in the same fashion.

Two private firms will be shortlisted, so two dedicate armored manufacturing plants will come up. Not to mention L&T will also raise a dedicated armored manufacturing plant as well for the K9 thunders.

So THREE plants dedicated for armor production, testing under the private sector will come up vs. the one or two controlled by OFB since independence. Make in India for defence and aerospace is looking very good buddy.

The Indian Army has a shortage of close to 390,000 bullet-proof helmets.
The new government is already sitting in the office for 3 years.
Not even adequate helmets for its infantrymen?
And talking big?
Shame?



This way India is stuck with Russia forever. Because such news has penetrated long before this article.

So what is the real meaning of "make-in-India"?

You're right, it should put more money into R&D, but these programs, as with FICV and future FRCV(T90/72 replacement) 80% funding will be by the government, the other 20% by the likes of TATA, Mahindra, L&T, etc.


Nothing wrong with more competition in the defence sector, all for the industrialist to come in, instead of the likes of over weight, clumsy OFB controlling the production of bullets to tanks who cant meet it's production targets.

And these industrialist seem to accelerating the development of several programs. Kestrel and ATAGS were prototyped and finished for trials ahead of schedule. This is only the beginning.

After rejecting Russia's APS, now they are working on Arena-M active defence system for T-72 &T-90s.

Russia’s new active protection system Arena-M for T-72 and T-90 tanks is capable of protecting armored vehicles from US Tube-launched Optically-tracked Wire-guided (TOW) missiles, Chief Designer of the Machine-Building Design Bureau Valery Kashin told TASS.

"According to the information we have on these missiles, the Arena-M will undoubtedly be able to protect a tank from a TOW," the chief designer said.

The new active protection system Arena-M is currently undergoing trials in Russia, Kashin said.

"Over the past time, Army Commander-in-Chief Colonel-General Oleg Salyukov has visited the Machine-Building Design Bureau twice. We agreed to sharply intensify the work. Now the active protection complexes for T-72 and T-90 tanks are at the stage of preliminary trials," Kashin said.

According to the chief designer, the Machine-Building Design Bureau and Uralvagonzavod have agreed to mount the active protection system on T-72 and T-90 tanks.

"But now the developers of tanks have requested quite a different arrangement of the active protection system. The principles seem to be the same but in actual fact this is an absolutely new development. Moreover, the active protection system configuration was specified several times in the course of developing T-72 and T-90 tanks and the complex had to be remade anew," the chief designer said.

The need for active protection is demonstrated by the latest combat experience, he noted.

"The conflicts in the Middle East have shown that, first of all, it is impossible to do without tanks and, secondly, they can no longer be protected by traditional means, including reactive armor: when struck, the tanks burst into flames," the chief designer said.

The Arena is an active protection system intended to shield tanks from anti-tank grenades and anti-tank guided missiles. Specifically, the Arena system comprises a multifunctional radar of increased jamming resistance designed to detect and track anti-tank targets. Focused instant-effect protective ammunition is used for the aimed destruction of incoming targets. Protective ammunition is accommodated in silo sections arranged around the turret.

The TOW is an American heavy anti-tank system made operational in the US Army in 1970. Missiles are directed by an operator and guided by wire or by a radio channel in the latest modification. This system is one of the most wide-spread complexes in the world.
