Stephen Bennett, 40, had travelled to Mumbai for a holiday, but was found hanged in a jungle on 11 December 2006.

The six all pleaded not guilty to murder and were granted bail by the Indian High Court.

The Foreign and Commonwealth Office said the court had heard from a number of witnesses, but that the hearing had been adjourned till later this month

A 33-year-old Russian female tourist has been found dead in her hotel room in the Indian state of Goa on the country's western coast, the Press Trust of India news agency said.

The agency cited local police as saying that the Russian woman had arrived in the state on tourist visa six days ago and was supposed to return back to Russia on March 24.

Police were informed about the incident by hotel staff after the woman did not respond to their calls on Wednesday evening and they had to open the locked door using a master key.

The circumstances of the tragedy are currently being established, police said.

Russian diplomats in India have not yet commented on the incident.

Goa has recently become a popular spot for Russian tourists seeking cheaper alternatives to spend their holidays, especially during the winter.

According to official data, about 40,000 Russians visit Goa annually.

PANAJI: Two waiters and a security guard were arrested for allegedly beating up the Australian national who later died while undergoing treatment, police said on Thursday. ( Watch )
Manak Basak (32), Jagat Pradhan (23) and Jaykrishna Das (25) were arrested by Calangute police under IPC Section 302 for the death of 65-year-old John Kelly, who were severely injured during a pub brawl with the accused on Wednesday.
The incident occurred on Thursday at 6.30 am when John had an altercation with the waiters over "style of serving beer", police said.
"We sent a beat constable to the spot after getting an information about the incident at 8 am. By that time, John had already left," Police Inspector Tushar Vernekar said.
John reportedly went back to his guest house at Candolim, five kilometres away from the spot, from where he was shifted to the Goa Medical College and Hospital.
"He arrived here at 9.30 am. He went to the room and fell on the floor. I called the ambulance to shift him to the hospital," Jose Philip Vaz, the guest house owner said.
Police said John "disappeared" after the brawl. "He was not traceable and we located him only at 1.30 pm when we received wireless message from the hospital," Vernekar, who is investigating the case, said.
The Australian died at 6 pm while being treated in the hospital.
Superintendent of Police Bosco George said police have registered a case of murder and further investigations are on.
