The defence shipyards in India are behind schedule in delivering warships to the Navy and that forces India to source ships from other countries. Vice Admiral B Kannan, programme director for Advanced Technology Vehicle (ATV), of the Indian Navy admits that there are delays in the ship-building schedules.
He was in Kochi on Tuesday to attend 'Build ships - build India', a maritime conference organized jointly by the National Maritime Foundation (NMF) and the Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).
"There are delays in ship-building schedules, and it is not owing to the inefficiency of the shipyards, but owing to their limitations in infrastructure that make some of the activities sequential, not parallel," Kannan said. The absence of common product code for the Navy also affects the development of the warships here. "The time has come for a naval code applicable to ship-building in India. This is for identifying and specifying the products, sourced from the Indian industries, and should be done under the tutelage of the Navy," he says.
Apart from delays in carrying out the work, full utilisation of capacity of domestic shipyards forced the Navy to buy ships from other countries. "When your requirement is excess to the indigenous production capacity, you have the choice to buy them from elsewhere if available or have them constructed in other countries," he said.
