Anyone can make long range rocket by making it literally long and having lot of fuel. But the accuracy is the main problem. If inaccurate, then your joke of hitting trees and killing crows will be the reality with the ICBM.

The technology for missiles are always classified and secretive. Even without sanctions, these are automatically banned from being sold. No country will risk giving such an important technology to others as it may be used against them one day.

Killing A sat in high altitude is more difficult because it is difficult to detect with radar.

DRDO's missile designing has matured a lot. Rapid changes, prototyping, and improvements gained from several other missile programs have been used and converged to this program. Materials, design looks good.

the most likely target of India's #ASAT test was Microsat-r (2019-006A). My analysis shows the test must have happened near 5:40 UT when the sat was moving northwards towards Abdul Kalam:

MICROSAT-R, in a 260 x 282 km, 89.9 deg orbit. Would have been ascending over NOTAM area at ~0530 UTC, within the 0430-0830 UTC window. It should have been operational, facilitating tracking.

  • MICROSAT-R satellite listed with a launch mass of 740 kg. It was just launched on 24 January 2019, as optical remote sensing satellite.
  • The Fengyun 1C weather satellite that China destroyed in 2007 was 750 kg.

By adding the flight path of the Chinese OS-M1 maiden flight with the satellite Lingque-1B from Jiuquan SLC launched just four hours latter, on March 27, 2019 at 09:39 UTC.

With the NAVAREA issued for the experimental flight trial scheduled from 27 March 2019, 4:30 to 8:30 UTC.

It is obvious that the message was intended to President Xi.:coffee:

And this means that in case of a military conflict, China will no longer be able to easily replace lost satellites with rapid reaction launchers such as previously thought, by using CZ-11 SLV or the new new OS-M1 SLV. Sun Synchronous Orbit (SSO) satellite launches that must overflight the Bay of Bengal would be intercepted before any payload could be delivered into space.

For now, peace is the only viable option for the two Asian Giants, as demonstrated over the last 12 millenia of coexistence.

Statistically, that is over 12'000 years of human recorded demographic history, China has always lead, second to none.


No wonder, as India was always lagging so far behind the Chinese Civilization over the past 12 millenia, and today's final acknowledgement of China as their leader, though belated, shows their awakening.

Pralay, K5 SLBM are the next big upcoming missile tests coming up shortly.

Should show you why supporting initial programs like Tejas, Arjun, etc. are important. India is rapidly prototyping, producing, inducting missile designs at this point. The developmental cycles are shorter and shorter.:tup:

Some rocket scientists in this thread seem to be having the time of their lives talking about stuff they know nothing about. The altitude of intercept is a very variable thing, I'm pretty sure future tests will reach much farther heights. But the thing is, you need to have a decommissioned sat in place that you're willing to lose, and which isn't gonna create too much of a problem with regard to space debris.

Taking out sats at lower altitudes means the debris will most likely burn up in the atmosphere instead of sticking around in orbit, posing massive hazards to spacecraft. That's why the Chinese ASAT test drew so much ire.

But really, hitting sats in higher orbits isn't that much of a problem, you just need more fuel is all. Infact as someone already pointed out, hitting sats in lower orbits is tougher, as they are moving at much faster speeds.

But the real significance here is that we demonstrated an ability to take out a fast moving sat in LEO with a hit-to-kill KKV (kinetic kill vehicle). Only the 4th country to demonstrate this capability. And this is only the first step.

An ASAT weapon is no mean feat, and on top of that, a ASAT with KKV warhead is an even bigger achievement.

Now onto the strategic significance...just like there was Nuclear non-proliferation treaty (NPT), there will also be a binding space warfare NPT in future. You can mark those words.

But now India already got its foot in the door with regard to the space warfare NPT. In future, India will enjoy the kind of power the present NPT-signatory countries (P5 UNSC permanent members) enjoy as against the non-NPT ones. People who follow geopolitics will understand the aspects at play here very well.

Satellites can be tracked to over 2000km with powerful radars. In fact, USA initially didn't allow small satellites from Swar technology to be launched citing that they were unsure of it being tracked. So, PSLV lunched them to 500km orbit. Later it was found that even the tiny satellites were detectable at 500km. So, large satellites will have no problem in being tracked even to 2000km

Just to let you know, India is member of space derbies tracking program.
And if one can trek derbies, they would have ample resources to trek a satellite.
Chandrayaan and Mangalyaan where not like fill it, shoot it and forget it...we contstantly tracked them and completed the need full maneuvers.

If there is a low orbit military spy sat at 300km its camera resolution will only detect 5 cm per pixel and a 100 pixel camera will detect only 5m so what idiot will put a spy sat at 300 km above earth which will spend all it fuel in under 1 year to keep adjusting it orbit due to gravity?


U want us to target Satellite at a orbit where every countries satellites are revolving ?

Congress or BJP both are Indians political parties and Indians here .
There will be a political fight between each parties .But thats it.

There might be a chance that this development fast tracked after Chinese repeated snubbings
nada...basically the clearance was given in 2016 itself. If you have heard saraswat then he is crystal clear. Simulations proved that India can do it, with some work(both ABM and Agni 5 capabilities were used for simulation). Had they got clearance in 2012 they would have accomplished it in 2014. So i don't think we should read too much of China or anyone into it. Modi govt. has taken lot of unprecedented steps and we need to give them credit for it. India simply lost its story especially in UPA 2 and probably that's why MMS could not take that call. International criticism might have been a deterrent then. Given Indian growth story is back complemented by Modi's decisive foreign policy, we have less geo-political pressures.

Not immediately - Pakistan doesn't have any military satellites currently (which would be a target of such an ASAT capability), so there's no immediate need to counter the Indian move.
This is more for China, but India and China would have to be at all out war for either to consider destroying each other's satellites.
I think such weapons are deterrents than anything else. The way nukes are mere white elephants, ASATs have same role to play. I don't think any party will like to give room to white elephant by using ASATs
