He's the head of both Space Agency and DRDO. This is a landmark event, we may have the capability to launch an ASAT weapon, but demonstration requires political go ahead as there can be repercussions on issue of debris, you might remember the ire China bought with their ASAT test. Given Modi is trigger happy, I wouldn't be surprised if he takes the credit for it.

Our space technology is indigenous. We don't need international approval for it. There is nothing to be isolated as India is already self sufficient in space technology

India had capability to demonstrate ASAT weapon way back in 2011. What we lacked was political will. As of now we do have capability to develop ICBM with 10000km range and we will demonstrate our capabilities when our political masters give go ahead. Problem is that US is pressuring India to cancel our land based ICBM programs as these missile can threaten US in future.

But really, hitting sats in higher orbits isn't that much of a problem, you just need more fuel is all. Infact as someone already pointed out, hitting sats in lower orbits is tougher, as they are moving at much faster speeds.

With regards to the actual test, while ASAT capabilities are a given for almost any country that has an operational space launch program (or a military ballistic missile component), demonstrating said capabilities serves to qualify and quantify them in a way that leaves no room for disambiguation.

While it is pretty evident that said test has a hearty sprinkle of political overtones due to the timing at hand, congratulations are timely to DRDO and ISRO for the successful completion of this milestone.

It isn't exactly existing. But an ICBM can be modified to be an anti sat weapon. Most of the technologies already existed, still, more work was required along with political will.

No sense, the sheer precision that required and interception in space is the job of anti icbm missile systems like THAAD or ARROW 3
