India Says Maoists Are Top Internal Threat
NEW DELHI (AP) — India's home minister says Maoist insurgents are the country's top internal security threat even as traditional conflicts in Kashmir and the northeast have ebbed.
Palaniappan Chidambaram was speaking Monday to a meeting of India's chief ministers aimed at coordinating the country's anti-terror efforts.
He said the security forces' fight against the Maoists in at least nine states was hampered by a lack of resources.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh also appealed to the state leaders to help strengthen the country's defenses against terror.
Many state leaders have rejected Singh's proposal to set up a national counterterror center as a power grab by the central government. The government says it needs a center to implement a unified strategy.

Look like Mao fans in India are near to facing some tough time. In local news Anti Naxal teams are asking for Drone survilience and air support to operation. As of last news it's in PMO for final flag. It will be interesting to see how moist are going to face gunships. May be human right shield :D

He cant say Islamic Terrorism,Or else he will lose the minority votebank.

Actually central government wants to push some centralized forces to the states which non-congress state governments are opposing tooth and nail. The state govts oppose in a point that it will damage the federal structure of India,

Thats why MMS is calling for state leaders. Maoists is just a reason. The congress government wants a centralized nation.

But there is no denying that Govt faces problem in putting down the Maoists bcs of interstate disputes. Even the notorious forest brigand Verrapan was caught after Karnataka & TN agreed to form a STF.

But state government are afraid of damage to federal government and state police will remain a second level force.

Everybody knows how the congress can utilize central agencies like CBI to forward its own agenda.

The central government can form joint teams as per requirement or even strengthen the intelligence and counter insurgency departments of state police.

Declare the Maoist areas as disturbed and declare AFSPA there.

Does paramilitary gets AFSPA cover?

I think so only active military/army gets the AFSPA.

AFPSA is not required, it creates problems sometimes due to absolute power to army.

But yes paramilitary forces are not able to completely eradicate the movement. We need aerial reconnaisance vehicles in maoist areas, so as to get clean targets without collateral damages.

Long Live the Naxals.

The biggest threat to India is the corrupt Indian Government itself.

How about 'Deep Penetration Units'.Got the idea after watching 'Clear & Present Danger':D. Also I heard Sri Lankan Army had some success with such units. They usually target LTTE commanders by ambushing them or use claymore mines on their vehicles.

Their movement is older than you and till now they can control only some jungles.
