No, we use pregnant. 怀孕. this is why i say Western scholarship on China is stupid and racist. we use technical words all the time. In fact, unlike Japan which directly uses English words for technical concepts like laser, electronics, computer, etc. China has a complete Chinese vocabulary for all modern technology that has nothing to do with the West. the west loves to portray us as backwards primitives though despite the fact that we don't even use thier loanwords.
There is always a difference between the colloquial, spoken language, and the more literary expressions - among all languages with
any self-respecting "literary traditions".
"有 (with/possessing) 喜 (happiness/luck/fortune)" is most definitely
still used in a more formal, literary sense. When you put the two characters together, even darn google translate knows it means "being pregnant" ...
So whoever mentioned it may be "behind times", but not exactly out-to-lunch.
On a separate note, slowly even I have been cluing into the
indisputable fact that the Japanese "Kanji" has had an
outsized impact on the modern Chinese technical vocabulary ...
" ... 现在我们常用的一些基本术語、词汇,大都是此时自日本舶來。如服务、组织、纪律、政治、革命、政府、政党、方针、政策、申请、解決、理论、哲学、原則等等,实际上全是来自日语的“外來语”,还有像经济、科学、商业、干部、健康、社会主义、资本主义、法律、封建、共和、美学、文学、美术、抽象……数不胜数,全是來自日语 ... "
Again, a little perspective goes a long way.
