India probes identity card for monkey god Hanuman

Prints of all 10 fingers and retina scans are being done to make it 100% fail safe. And databases are searched for validating every new issuance to avoid duplication of cards, that was the original purpose of the project, and that's why the project is taking time.

As i have worked on biometric application development, so imo that's not feasible unless you have some kind of super computers at backbone to process these searches, i don't think Indian or even UAE authorities have deployed that. On top of that it works on proximity bases not 100% match and finger prints of humans are not 100% different from each other, i.e. if you do search based on 80% accuracy in 150 million database, you will get results in 100s of thousands if not millions. That's the reason police have to match the finger prints retrieved from crime scenes with the suspects, otherwise they would be simply searching database and peww the criminal found.

That's why scans of 10 fingers and 2 irises and face is taken to increase the accuracy. And they have a centralized server and they do check for duplication, the accuracy they claim is 99.943%, and then they do manual checking in case of system generated false positives. Check this link, especially page 26, 27, 28.

It's Unique Identity....stress being on unique. There is no bar on what one wants to be known as except that those in charge of taking the pictures should have been dealt with. The key here is that the person who gave his fingerprints & Iris scan won't get another card issued. The media has a ball with such things without understanding that simple point.

That's wishful target and theoretically it's achievable but not practically, You should read complete document to find out why.

Hindu deity Hanuman gets unique ID
Stunt shows that one can easily get an Aadhar card by paying money to agents or touts

Strange as it may seem, Hindu deity Hanuman of the epic Ramayana has now got a unique identification number — 209470519541.

He has been assigned the 12-digit ID as part of the Indian government’s Aadhar card drive. Not just that, the deity has got a mobile number, an address in North Rajasthan and a father “Pawan-ji”.

just goes to show you that having too much money, more movies than hollywood and expensive defence doesnt automatically a first world country.
what you highlighted are the hallmarks of a third world country where state and private institutions and individuals in the positions of authority abusing it, engaging in corruption or being downright incompetent and absent minded giving birth to such news, it cant be just one data entry clerk but supervisor, printer, and record keeping staff who has failed to see the obvious

@Al Bhatti The card is NOT a proof of Indian citizenship, it is just an identity card for people living in India, and anybody can get one. And this approach is being criticized and maybe changed later.

@Irfan Baloch As the deputy director general of UIDAI Ashok Dalwai said; "This is a deliberate mischief on the part of the operator. He will be removed permanently and the enrolment agency will be penalized". However, such instances are few given the vast number of cards that are being processed.

Please point out..........!! :)

Check slide 28, 32, 33, 57 and also note the word "possible" or "can be achieved" instead of "Will be" though out presentation.

What if operator captured IRIS from one person, and FPs of multiple persons ? And they collectively made prank.

Checked, which part of those slides are problematic? In case of poor scans, re-scans and manual checking are being done. We are doing everything to make the cards "Unique" as the name suggests. :)

If the two persons apply separately again, then they will be refereed to manual checking. And the operator will not be spared.

3 different ABIS scan for duplicate on different proximity level and then final score is being calculated to accept or refer for manual testing (i.e. by changing accuracy level and looking at pictures). ABIS accuracy level for the solutions is not mentioned here, But the simply rule in biometric verification is increasing accuracy level will decrease the ability to find match - so, if the accuracy level is higher in auto search than it mean their are higher chance of false accept, on other hand if it's lower than there will be more burden on operator for manual decision which will reduce his/her quality of work. Although, IRIS along with FP will increase the accuracy but still it's not possible to achieve 99.94% accuracy practically because of quality of data input, That's why you can't be 100% sure that duplicate ID can't be issued, However still it can reduce fraud risks significantly.

Then multiple people might be in trouble when they try to get their own card.

As the methodology deployed here is collective score of 10 FPs and 2 Iris - so, it's highly unlikely that they will be in trouble, unless authority put them in black list.

Issued in the name of “Hanuman-ji”, the Aadhar card shows the deity wearing a crown and a string of pearls, adorning the same look in that he is worshipped across the country by millions of Hindus.

In the epic Ramayana, Lord Hanuman is the son of Vayu, the Wind god, or “Pawan-ji’.

Last week, the card was delivered to the post office in the Sikar district of Rajasthan. Since there was no authentic recipient for the card, the local postman could not deliver it. The card will now be sent back to Bengaluru from where it was dispatched on September 6.

If an Aadhar card can be issued to Hanuman-ji, it can be issued to anyone, was the message.

The incident highlighted the apprehensions that the data collected by private agencies for issuing the Aadhaar card could be easily misused and manipulated.

“When postman Heera Lal received the card for delivery, he was shocked and brought the matter to the notice of senior officials. When they tried calling the mobile number listed on it, it was found to be switched off. Heera Lal thought that by mistake Hanumanji’s picture must have got placed on the card. So, he tried to search for the man ‘Hanumanji’. Since the address was incomplete, we were forced to open the envelope just to check for more details. But we were shocked to see Lord Hanuman’s photo on the card,” postmaster Gobraj told Gulf News over the phone.

He said the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) should probe the matter further and find out the person behind the mischief to prevent recurrence of such incidents. However, the preliminary probe into the matter suggests the card was made by one Vikas Kumar, a computer operator in Rajasthan, who hit up on the idea of submitting an Aadhar application.

“I tried several times to get an Aadhar card made for myself, but my finger prints were always rejected by the system, so I applied in the name of Hanuman and I gave my address and phone number,” Kumar told Gulf News.

The number Kumar listed on the card belongs to one Ankit who earlier worked in a private agency involved in the process of issuing Aadhar cards.

The Indian government’s Aadhar scheme assigns each citizen a unique identification number after registering his biometrics and fingerprints. However, the Aadhar scheme has been plagued by anomalies since its inception with lakhs of cards remaining undelivered after they were found to be fake.

The stunt by Kumar clearly shows that one can easily get an Aadhar card by paying money to the agents or touts. In the past, illegal migrants from Pakistan and Bangladesh have also been found to be availing the facility by paying as little as Rs200 to touts who manage to get around the so-called unbeatable unique identification mechanism. The government outsourced the task of issuing the cards to various private agencies who have been doing so without carrying out proper verification. However, Director General of UIDAI Vijay Madan feels the system is foolproof.

“UIDAI has an accuracy rate of 99.9 per cent, and this incident accounts for less than .1 per cent of the cases which slip through the system. Since the population is so huge, when the absolute number of such cases adds up, it seems huge. This is an exceptional case and it can happen again since UIDAI follows a technological process, and sometime such rare and exceptional cases slip through it. Even if such cases take place, the processes built by the agency soon catch up and clean the system of the data,” Madan told Gulf News.

He said the UIDAI has set certain rules to deal with such cases, which includes blacklisting the agency or registration of a criminal case if the mistake was found to be intentional. The agency involved in the incident has been removed.

Albeit, there are many diverse countries on the Globe but India seems to be on extremes.....on the one hand it sends probes to Mars but on other hand, people are married off with Dogs for certain benefits, the bright brains, who may run India's IT industry during day probably go for a dip in the Ganges in the evening, which by India's own admission is severely polluted. I doubt Hanuman needed an identity in India or he is planning to fly abroad however as i said in India, people can go to any extreme for some benefits and interest.

The card showed a picture of the monkey god, complete with iris scan and fingerprints
Authorities in India are investigating how Hanuman, the monkey god, has been issued a biometric identity card.

The card photo features the character from the Hindu epic Ramayana wearing gold and pearl jewellery and a crown.

It emerged when a postman attempted to deliver the card, but could not find a Hanuman at the address.

When he looked at the photograph he realised it was probably a prank. It is not clear who the iris scan and fingerprints on the card belong to.

The card lists Hanuman as "Pawan-ji's" son (the god was known as son of Pawan in Hindu mythology) and lists a mobile phone number and an address in the western state of Rajasthan.

Hanuman is generally depicted with a human body, a red monkey's face and a tail. There are temples dedicated to Hanuman all over the country.

Postman Heeralal Saini, who was given the card for delivery, returned it to the post office after he failed to find "Pawan-ji's son Hanuman" and the phone number listed on the card did not connect, an official in Rajasthan's postal department told BBC Hindi.

The card will now be returned to the Bangalore office of Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), he said.

Who is Hanuman?
_77552038_167407486(2).jpg
The monkey god Hanuman is a popular Hindu deity
Part human-part monkey, Hanuman is a central character in the Hindu epic Ramayana. He is generally depicted as a man with the face of a monkey and a long tail.

Often described as the "son of Pawan", the Hindu god for wind, Hanuman is known for his extraordinary daring feats, strength and loyalty.

The Ramayana describes him as an ideal devotee of Lord Ram. According to the epic, Hanuman and his vaanar sena - an army of monkeys - help Ram in his battle against Ravana, the Sri Lankan demon king who kidnaps his wife Sita.

According to legend, Hanuman could enlarge his body at will, fly across the ocean, carry a mountain on his palm and burn down large parts of Lanka with his tail on fire.

Hanuman's followers believe that worshipping him will liberate them from fear and danger.

The local centre and the operator who issued the card will be identified and punished, deputy director general of UIDAI Ashok Dalwai said.

"This is a deliberate mischief on the part of the operator. He will be removed permanently and the enrolment agency will be penalised.

"The process of identifying the operator and the agency is on. It will not take time for us to identify. But I must also point out that such instances are few given the vast number of cards we process," he added.

India launched the huge national identity scheme aimed at cutting fraud and improving access to state benefits in 2010.

The scheme aims to issue an ID card with a 12-digit unique number to all of India's 1.2 billion citizens with details of their biometrics - including an iris scan, fingerprints and photographs.
