India-Pakistan - Reconciliation?

I don't buy any of that. Sorry.

You don't buy any of what, since I referenced several different themes, and why?

Even a monkey can be trained to shake his head to suggest 'no' - being able to expound upon why we think what we do is what distinguishes humans though! ;) :D

I don't buy it. It seems contrived.

There's a huge list of great Indian movies. You think the biggest movie industry in the world only produces dance sequences?

Ok, got the second part of your post now.

They produce a lot of rubbish along with the dance sequences. Some movies I did like, such as, the Sunjay Dutt ones, but the only reason I even bothered to watch them was because I saw a bit of the movie while visiting a friend who was watching them.

But I really have no time to sit through dozens of movies in the hope of finding one that is worthwhile. The reputation of Bollywood is one of frivolity, and while that may appeal to some, in fact many, it doesn't appeal to me.

On the flip side, some really bad TV drama's were produced in Pakistan as well, but the reputation was one of good performances, and addressing serious issues, so I would still watch new ones. Its just the general theme of different industries, and the kind of product the generally churn out.

Well the point I'm trying to make is that you seem quite happy with the stereotypical view of Bollywood while you seem especially eager to point out the few "gems" of Pakistani cinema.

Of course, I'm not surprised at all - its what one would expect - just not from you.

I actually pointed out a 'few gems' in both Indian and Pakistani cinema, and in fact Indian cinema has quite a few from the days of Amitabh Bachaan, Sunil Dutt etc.

I am not suggesting that the 'few gems' in Pakistani cinema make Lollywood 'awesome', in fact the purpose behind pointing out the 2 movies was to show that Lollywood had to change, and it was horrible at the moment, bar those two products.

Bollywood is what it is, I am not stereotyping. GP himself confirmed my view, Bollywood is about entertainment, because its audience primarily demands frivolous entertainment, which is why films like KKL and RP do not do well in the Indian market.

.
Well anyway, people have a right to not like some movies or an entire genre of movies.

I think the South India movies had better production values in the 80s and the 90s. The Mumbai Industry recovered lately and is producing some good films. Overall, I personally don't find too many movies to be exciting. Admittedly I am not a big film buff and the movies need to really justify the high price tag that they carry now.

.
There is difference between entertainment and frivolous entertainment both kinds of films are produced, Bollywood movies which are good entertainment find audiences across the border, I you may not like them but we do not represent the masses who enjoy to watch such movies, Its a huge black market which is infact hurting film industry.
I also said that as long as movies are made which cater to audiance taste it will sell. Plus audiences are never satisfied with few such movies they want more and more.

Lol...I was just kidding...most of bollywood is indeed pure escapism.....there's not a shred of doubt about that.

However, there is quality cinema also, and there's a significant amount of that, just that it kinda gets drowned out by the media frenzy surrounding popular cinema.

Sorry to inform you but your idea of developing a movie industry around films like KKL and RP is probably not going to work. If anything, the taste in movies on both sides of the border is pretty much the same.

People want escapism, not reality.

there was a parallel cinema movement in the 70's and 80's, sometimes called Art cinema. People like satyajit rai, bimal roy and shyam benegal and even mahesh bhatt with films like ARth, directed some fine and meaningful films.

Sadly, those days are gone.

If meaningful films have to mean loss making films, it was never going to sustain itself.

Now some people are trying to create films that are not loss making while conveying the message that they want to pass. Niche films can really come into their own because they can recover the money from just urban centers. Not every film has to now pander to the common minimum denominator to make money.

they were never loss making films to start off with. however, the trend changed in the late 80's, when people became more materialistic and didn't want anything to do with "communism" inspired films. There was a shift in mentality among the Bhaaratiya middle classes, and unless there is anothe shift in the future, it will remain that meaningful films will be few and far between.

I personally think that we have more in comon than any other neighboring countries on the globe.

That is correct, Pakistan and India were both part of one entity (British India).

.
Yes, the movies have changed with the changes in the Indian society.

Now people are no longer interested in angry young men or the evil Zamindar themes any more.

I guess the theme for the Hindi movies has been changing almost every decade. Right from films on social issues like untouchability etc. in the 50s, to the village themes in the 60s, angry young man against the system, Daku movies in 70s.

The 80s were really bad and filmmakers didn't know any better. The came the David Dhawan kind of comedy. Mushy romances by the likes of Chopras and Karan Johar etc.

Interesting journey and reflecting the aspirations if not always the reality of Indian masses.

RE: Thread Title.

This is a good thread, it is a change from the usual Pakistani and Indians members killing each other. :)

The only bad thing about this thread is that I feel so left out. :D
