Unfortunately, 72% of cars sold in China are of foreign brands. And China's domestic brands have been losing market share against foreign brands in 2011.

China is just like India in that the local market is foreign brand dominated. What separates India from China is the fact that foreign automakers actually invest in R&D capability in India and mass export from India, because of India's good IP protection and the permission of 100% foreign ownership of auto plants, whereas foreign automaker's investment in China are strictly for Chinese market consumption only because of the JV requirement.

There are only five countries in the world with strong local auto manufacturers; the US, Germany, Japan, Korea, and France.

100%-72%=28% (domestic Chinese cars according to you)
0.28 * 18,264,667 (number of vehicles produced in china/annum)= 5,114,107
Number of cars produced in Korea, foreign and domestic=4,271,941

5,114,107 > 4,271,941

So even with your numbers, China still produces more domestic cars than Korea's entire domestic and foreign production

P.S. Iran produces 1.6 million vehicles per year and almost all of them are dometic cars, made by domestic manufacturers. To say that Korea, US, Germany and a couple of others are the only countries with strong local manufacturers is just ******* stupid

This is just stupid. He is not comparing two countries size of auto markets but referring to foreign auto makers share in China. China has population of over a billion and your comparing it with Korea to make a point is rather silly.

His point being Chinese auto makers doesn't dominate their market like Korea's does is not negated with the above explanation. In fact can you also produce the export figures for both these countries. How are their companies regarded outside their countries? And your explanation for Iran is not valid because Iran is under heavy sanctions. No other foreign car maker would enter your market. So you are winning without competition.

How can this be, that Hyundai Motor sold more cars than the entire number of autos built in Korea in 2010, which includes 900K by Daewoo, 300K by Renault, 100K by Ssangyong, etc? Same for Japan. Toyota alone sols 7 million cars in 2010, but Japan as whole built only 9.6 million(A lot less this year because of the Tsunami disaster).

Because the Korean auto industry is highly internationalized, building a significant volume outside of Korea around the world to escape Korea's high labor cost(Hyundai's Korean assembly workers make $85K a year vs $60K a year for Hyundai's US assembly workers).

Chinese domestic brand automakers on the other hand build almost all exclusively in China, far worse because the number must split among 100 or so Chinese brands selling in China.

So even with your numbers, China still produces more domestic cars than Korea's entire domestic and foreign production
Korea's domestic and foreign production is 9 million a year.

I think a better comparison would be between number of cars being churned out by Korean companies against Chinese car companies.

Hyundai sold 3.6 Million cars in 2010, Kia 1.4 Million. Don't think Chinese car companies can match that number, let alone the quality.

Apart from the German giants, even exotic car companies have showrooms in Iran. From Maserati to Lamborghini
We have BMW, OPEL, Mercedes, Chinese companies, Koreans, Japanese etc... Only Americans aren't represented in the Iranian market.

Must be an old article. Honda and Toyota's sales are falling off like a rock off the cliff in Korea in 2011. Subaru and Mitsubishi fled Korea, and Honda Accord, once a number 1 import car, disappeared from Top 10. Why? Look at the US auto comparison articles, where Sonata's killing Accord and Camry, Elantra's killing Civic, etc. Do you think Korean consumers would think of Hondas and Toyotas any differently than the US auto journalists? The biggest Korean consumer complaints against Japanese brand model is the "cheapness". Japanese cars just feel cheap relative to Korean cars when you sit inside nowadays.

So let me ask you. Do you believe Iranian brand autos are competitive outside of Iran? Or do they survive because of a heavy protectionism/international sanctions?

Total made in Korea is 4 million.

4.3 million in Korea + 4 million outside of Korea(US, Europe, China, Russia, India, etc) in 2010. Number's up in 2011 quite a bit. Japanese press expects Hyundai to overtake Toyota in production volume three years.

The fact that Hyundai sells more car in China than any Chinese car company, pretty much ends this this discussion. :lol:

For the first seven months of this year, China-based assemblers sold 6.2 million passenger cars. Of this total, 4.1 million, or 67%, were foreign brands, and 2.1 million, or 33%, were homegrown models. Volkswagen, with a market share of just over 16%, and General Motors, with a nearly 10% share, lead the foreign companies. Toyota, Honda, Nissan and Hyundai follow closely behind at approximately 6% each. Meanwhile, BYD and Chery lead the locals with roughly 5% each, and Geely is close on their heels with an almost 4% market share.
