India looks likely to scrap multi-calibre rifle contest

. .
some of the criteria are mentioned here....

the Army has stated requirement for a gun which has two barrels that can be used in different types of operations, army sources said here.

For counter-insurgency operations, we want the guns to be equipped with barrels of 7.62mm calibre bullets, and for conventional warfare, we want the gun to fire 5.56mm bullets, they said.

The multi-role assault rifles are being procured to replace the existing INSAS series of rifles from the Infantry battalions, they said.

The sources said such a rifle would also help in saving cost for procuring two different types of guns for the troops and would require only three parts, including the barrel and the magazine, to be changed which would be possible at the unit level only.

The Army wants the new guns not to be heavier than 3.6 kilograms, almost half kilogram lighter than the INSAS rifles.

The Army has sought complete transfer of technology from the vendors so that the guns can be license produced at Indian ordnance factories.

The force also wants the rifles to be equipped with under barrel grenade launchers and capable of firing indigenously- produced ammunition.

The INSAS rifles, designed by the DRDO, were inducted into the armed forces in the 90s and have been used in the Kargil war and counter-insurgency operations also.

In its early days with the force, the rifles had faced reliability problems in cold climate in places such as Kashmir Valley and Siachen glacier.

Army issues tender for multirole assault rifles - timesofindia-economictimes

problems might be operating same gun into various conditions like Arctic Warfare(something like Siachen) in -50 degree ,in Desert(Rajasthan) in 50 degree,in dusty environments, humid conditions and such...very few guns cut these marks...in fact, very few hardwares are ever made for these kind of massive range of demanding conditions.

the solution is,make something of your own...

the result....

it may not be world beater in every field, but may be suitable in these environments..but then media will cry for using these "inferior" products.

why not get the best of both worlds and adapt to the 6.5 Grendel.

Will require production of a completely new ammunition type when 6.8 is found acceptable around the world. Your thinking like a hobbyist. Should think of it like business. India's million man strong army requires the best rifle, and the lowest cost not to mention able to arm a million would mean the rifle has to be adaptable to various terrain/ climate and field conditions.

LOL....what are these high standards of Indian Army and Airforce that 'international' vendors seem to miss all the time.
What project is next to get axed?

You would think that it would be thought out a little bit before being even put out there. However, its a typical sleazy businessman move by India. Essentially sending out RFQs to all firms, getting their quotes only to cancel contracts and then try backdoor channels to the cheapest dealer to get a deal.

Unethical, but effective.

We are baniyya for a reason. Get on our level.

Why did the Russians always take them for a ride? Or the Israelis? And now the French with their M2k upgrades, Scorpene deal and the Rafale? Not to mention their own HAL and DRDO.
(Doesn't that pretty much cover their majority of suppliers?)

There is no doubt on that. Hindus in General but lesser so in UP and other states with their idiotic 5000 head weddings.
UP Muslims are total idiots when it comes to money generally and spend on needlessly lavish stuff. They will buy and spend where the Muslim in the south might save.

However, even within Muslims and Hindus there are the Gujratis.. they are natural businessmen and misers to their death bed.
So considering a Gujarati is right now in charge of India.. money making is unstoppable.

Why is it always one sided? MKI, Brahmos, LRSAM, Talwar, MIG 29UPG, several Israeli electronics, etc. were good deals. Which few would ever offer to India. It's not one sided.

And for DRDO, they might have screwed up on some occasions, but guess what? It also has an SSBN in sea trials, one about to launch to sea. and another in construction. Besides it's SLBMs trialing. And also currently MIRVing it's next missile in it's Agni series. With the pervious Agni 5 developed, trialed, canistered, and inducted in record time. DRDO labs are increasingly becoming more competent, especially the ones dealing with ballistic missiles.
