Bottom line, China and India have a similar population size, and a similar amount of arable land.

Yet China produces more than double the food output of India.

Also, once "mechanized agriculture" becomes more widespread (like in the USA)... this food output will increase even more.

I've read about the government effort to combat desertification in national geographic few years ago. It's a slow steady process partly involves warding off sand encroachment using pine trees, decreasing soil salinity and reclaiming the land back bit by bit.

The Gobi desert is expanding more than 10,000 square kilometers (3,861 square miles)
a year due to overplowing and overgrazing. This expansion has already forced migration
and threatens thousands more villages in the Chinese province of Gansu and in the autonomous regions
of Inner Mongolia and Ningxia Huizu. China’s sheep, goat, and cattle populations tripled from 1950-2002,
taking a heavy toll on soil quality. Overgrazing by these animals and an increase in tilled land has allowed
the desert to expand. In Gansu Province alone, an estimated 4,000 villages are at risk of being buried with sand.

If goernment is advocating farming using imported corn it's a good thing.

What do you think is one of the reasons that the chinese government is quite comitted to the south-to-north water transfer project?

Growing crops like wheat and corn is a waste of precious water resources. China need to import more wheat and corn and let the land in Northern China (China's bread basket) to have a long overdue rest.

It's a good sign that growing food is becoming less and less attractive to rural Chinese, one often read stories about farmlands being abandoned. The Chinese government currently have a program in certain parts of China to turn farmland into forest (退耕還&#26519, we should extend this program to more areas of China.

American government are subsidizing their farmers, China should take advantage of this. Save our water resources for the future generations!
