India is losing its hold on ITeS Services

India's dominant role in ITeS services is slowing fading. Brazil, Philippines and Sri Lanka are giving tough competition to India. We have become very expensive. And they are offering services cheaper than India said, Mr. Ramesh Bhandari, MD of Pegasys Information Technologies Pvt. Ltd while addressing first year management students of IMT Hyderabad. He was the Chief Guest on the 5th Day of the 12-Day Business Orientation Program that IMT Hyderabad has embarked on.

Addressing 120 gathering of students and faculty, he spoke on ITeS & Cloud Computing. Indian IT BPO industry has grown by 6.1% in 2010 and is expected to grow by 19% in 2011, added Ramesh Bhandari. ITeS is contributing to the economical growth accounting for around 5.66% of the country's GDP and provides direct employment to about 2.3 million people and indirect employment to many more, he said.

Stating further he added that emerging trends in service delivery like Cloud Computing and Platform BPO are likely to remodel the industry by creating new business opportunities for the IT / ITeS vendors and driving changes in the traditional service offerings.

Cloud Computing is the next BIG thing to happen, he informed. It is the next BIG thing after internet in modern IT era. Cloud Computing is a general term for anything that involves delivering hosted services over the internet, he informed. With Cloud Computing, you eliminate managing Hardware and Software. Cloud Computing application can be up and running in weeks. It is low cost. Just a browser and log in. Cloud Computing when emerged fully IT managers need not lose jobs, he said.

About 85% of the ITeS-BPO revenues come from exports. Total ITeS revenues reached $14.7 billion in 2009-2010 from $2 billion in 2004. While IT services continue to be the largest contributor, the ITeS segment has grown faster over the last five years, he said. During 2009-2010, IT / ITeS distribution out of the 73.1 billion revenue is 36.2% is from IT, 14.7% from Software Products and Engineering Services, 12.8% from ITeS-BPO and 9.4% from Hardware, he informed.

The emerging trends in 2011 include Cloud Computing, Platform BPO, Emergence of Ties 2 Cities as IT / ITeS destinations, growth of Indian Software Product Industry.

He also added that many Indian IT companies are setting up shops in China.

At the end he told the management students to be people manager. The business leader is always a people manager. In IT industry people are their assets. He told them to have focus and carve a niche for themselves. Choose your path correct. Your first step has to be correct even if it is not paid well, he said.

The ITeS industry has lost its charm. He told students to be doubly sure about this sector before they plunge. He also told them not to get into Entrepreneurship unless they are passionate about it. He advised them to change with trends and keep innovating. He also told if you stay long in one job... beware you will be overrun by the competition.

If its the call centre/BPO industry the author is referring to , yes the base wages have gone up and naturally they are moving to places with more cheaper labour. Not only Brazil, Lanka and Philipines..Kenya also is emerging as a competitor.

But if its the software industry then hell no. We are as strong as ever.

It is expected as the standard of living of ITES work force increases their demand for higher wages too will increase that will result in increase in the cost of production. Few years later the same thing will happen to Phillippines and other countries when their cost of production increases which by the way is inevitable.

The article is just an interpretation of a seminar given plus the ifo given in the article certainly doesn't show a decline.
Good to see Sri Lanka competing in IT services.:tup: hope even Bangladesh, Nepal and Pakistan do well.

There should be a SAARC initiative to set up finishing schools and engineering universities in all member states to promote IT

I am into IT and very much aware of the Growth..... BPO can move out of India to small countries. But IT as a hole its Huge.... Forgot Obama speach India's Silicon VS US Silicon Valley.... US and Europe knows India's capabilities of Delivering Project and Developing skill.... No one Can Challenge Indian Thinking Power and Developing Skills.

Absolute right.....to minimize the cost the IT companies now putting less but quality ppl in projects....10 yrz back in my company there are 10 ppl for one task.....now one person do task of 10....and my company pay him heavily...

I think he means the BPO revenue was 14 billion. Total ITeS revenue is 5.6% of 1.7 trillion GDP, i.e. about 95 billion.

I was talking to some girls in IT in India and they said it is normal to spend 12-14 hours/day at work. And this is IBM, presumably one of the nicer companies. Is it the same in other top level IT companies?

yes...almost...except few of the like HCL, TCS....here job is safer...but they pay less if you have experience and want to join them....there are just like govt companies...i'll join this after 2 yrz...becz now i want relaxing life....:coffee:

No.

TCS (which I worked in) is an absolute pleasure, except the Chennai branch.

Wipro , people put in average of 10 hrs a day and similar is the case in Infy.

Cheaper is not the excuse here...Actually Brazil and Philipines are more expensive..in terms of wages than India..the problem in India is exploitative profiteering..While the enterprise owner makes a lot of money, the wages meted out to the labors are extremely poor and akin to "exploitation". Which means the employee has little commitment to his job and has more concentration on his pet project or better job hunting. This results is high employee turn out and stagnation of quality.

One of the other problem of Indian companies is that they expect employes to put in a lot of unpaid hours and called it "work is worship" which basically means incompetent trolls spend after hours doing work they should have finished during official duty hours!

Compared to India, the net quality, talent and dedication to work is much higher in Brazil and Phillipines. No Bias or anything but I never had a good experienced in dealing with these "outsourced" Indian talent! Usually Indian talent which is hired or imported to work "onshore" is of top brass, but this could be more people willing to travel out of their home country for better wages in foreign countries.

Yes, Unchallenged Indian thinking power..Using B2 visas to illegally recruit, H1-B scams, poor quality work..royal screw up of Windows Vista, Adobe, Symantec etc etc..you cannot have quality and talent on the cheap..

Saudi government booted out HP and Cisco from government contracts for outsourcing the services on the cheap to India while charging for it in Dollars as per the US rate..if we pay in dollars we expect to be served in quality of dollar..was the argument of the government..Now Juniper and Dell are ruling the day..Micheal Dell (a jew) came to Saudi Arabia and inked the deal to set up local assembly and training of Saudi youth.

another self proclaimed expert giving his views about something he doesn't knows anything about.....if u never had any good experience in dealing with indian talent, why did u say in your next line that they are top brass??? and how do u know they are willing to move out of their country, seeing by your location flag, it is you who has left his country in search of better wages....

12 Years of combined high end IT experience from its infancy in Saudi Arabia. Cannot elaborate much due to do anonymity reason!

I saw rise and fall of many project and many royal screw-ups where outsourcing could be held as prime culprit, more importantly outsourcing to India as a prime culprit..I can still give you contact numbers of few in IBM who will get you the full story!

The only few consumer IT companies left doing well are those who did not ride the high wagon of outsourcing to India..for example..Apple!

and i have seen India rise as the major hub of IT services, brushing all "falls and royal screw-up".......if india's IT industry was as bad as you have said, I wouldn't have got an intern at Amazon right now.....:cheesy::rofl:
