India, Iran discuss undersea gas pipeline bypassing Pakistan

Exclusive Economic Zone of Pakistan
Pakistan seabed territory grows by 50,000 square kilometres.

Pakistan’s seabed territory grew by about 50,000 square kilometres after a UN body accepted Islamabad’s claim for extension of sea limits.

“On 19 March 2015, United Nations’ Commission on Limits of Continental Shelf (UNCLCS) completed its review and accepted Pakistan’s claim for extension of its continental shelf limits, thereby extending Pakistan’s sea limits from 200 nautical miles to 350 nautical miles,” Pakistan Navy’s media directorate said.

Following the acceptance of the claim, Pakistan’s offshore territory of 240,000sqkm would expand by another 50,000sqkm allowing the country to benefit from the natural resources contained in it.

The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) grants special rights to the coastal states with regards to exploration and use of marine resources, including energy production in the area in its jurisdiction, which is also described as exclusive economic zone.

Under the UNCLOS, coastal countries are allowed economic control of the waters and seabed up to 200nm from their shores. The international treaty allows countries to further claim an extended continental shelf stretching up to 350nm from the baselines of its territorial sea if they could prove that the claimed area was a natural prolongation of their land territory.

Pakistan welcomed the UN commission’s verdict, terming it a “landmark achievement and a momentous event in the country’s history”.

Adviser to Prime Minister on Foreign Affairs and National Security Sartaj Aziz in a statement said: “It is of great satisfaction for us that Pakistan’s claim at the United Nations’ Commission on Limits of Continental Shelf, for extension of outer limits of its continental shelf, has been unanimously approved.”

This development, he said, would boost Pakistan’s efforts aimed at sustainable socioeconomic uplift of the people of Pakistan.

Article 76(4) to (6) of the UNCLOS prescribes a complicated formula for claiming such an extension. The claimant state has to present legal and scientific basis for its claim before a 21-member commission of experts. The evidence is accompanied by maps to prove that the claimed continental shelf is extension of its territory and fits the description given under Law of Sea Treaty of 1982.

Pakistan had filed its case with the UNCLCS on April 30, 2009. The application was preceded by a four-year extensive study jointly conducted by the Pakistan Navy and National Institute of Oceanography under the patronage of Ministry of Science and Technology.

A seven-member sub-commission of the UNCLCS evaluated Pakistan’s case for a year and accepted Pakistan’s claim.

Some of the claimed territory overlapped Omani claim. It is believed that the verdict in favour of Pakistan was announced after successful negotiations with Oman.

Mr Aziz in his statement thanked the government of Oman.

“We are thankful to the brotherly country of Oman for its understanding and cooperation in the matter,” the adviser said.

What is the EEZ?

The exclusive economic zone is the zone where the U.S. and other coastal nations have jurisdiction over natural resources.

What is the EEZ?

I love the obsession these kids of our beloved 'eastern neighbour' show about us ....

almost 10 year old news ....

Here u may be the kid,are u trying to say there r no recent attacks in Balochistan or everything is normal in Balochistan . The news may be old but that doesn't dilute the matter. I had read about recent attacks on buses and trains coming from Rawalpindi. It will be a uphill task to provide security round the clock, not a easy one.

@Syama Ayas over 10,000 died in india only in nexal attacks from 2005 to 2010, still not finished, over 40,000 died in ongoing north eastern insurgency in last 35 years (1979 till today), so applaying ur logic no body should work in india :D many foreginers got raped in north and central india, so no one should visit central india. Kashmir violence, well leave it. Naxal violence: Over 10,000 people killed in past five years | News | Human rights

Insurgency in Northeast India - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Er............the regions which have highest intensity of insurgency in India, no foreign investments occur.

Also rape crime merely discourages sending foreign women for work, but in case a women has to be sent, she"ll be sent with Male colleague.

Unlike an insurgency, where people actually get killed, no foreign company will invest or risk sending its employees.

Pakistanis like you on this thread need to read on what Risk appetite is.

Interesting within 2015, there have been 3 instances of attacks in Baluchistan.

And Pakistanis here want to sell Baluchistan as a safe destination to invest

Why are you quoting a 10 year old news? Baluchistan is stabilizing rather rapidly and hundreds of fighters have surrendered this year alone.
The news was in regard to safety of Chinese in Pakistan, which would be of paramount interest to the Pakistan Govt and yet these people got attacked.

More than surrenders, its been the question of attacks, which continues to happen.

Obviously this news has no effect on the current situation of Pakistan, because a special branch of 12 thousand solders has been setup to protect the Chinese and the statistical figures show that attacks across Pakistan have fallen by 70%. Next year this will decrease further, because the FC has made tremendous progress in Baluchistan. 10,000 Chinese are officially working in Pakistan and this figure will double in the next 2 years. Attacks are occuring in India from the Naxilities, does not mean FDI will stop and companies will leave when potential profits are bound to be made. Already FWO has completed nearly 70% of the road which will connect Gwadar to the rest of Pakistan, then the effects will be made clear. You have to come to Pakistan to witness how much work is ongoing across the country.

Wonderful news. Once done, we both will get benefited. Though this might take some time but its worth it.

Sir calling other kid won't satisfy your ego .... come openly use all your Indian mentality to stork your puny ego ...

BTW no one here is assuming that 'all the bastards' are cleared out; no they exist, it will take some more time as their unclaimed bastard parents still exist in the known eastern & western states .... so we worked on both the bastards & their 'unclaimed bastard parents' thats why birth rate has gone down, soon their pain will be felt to all the places from where ever these bastard have their linage ....

This thread is deja vu all over again.

I am not sure of the economic feasibilty of the pipeline compared to regular tankers, esp with the EEZ continental shelf extension by Pakistan....unless India manages to reroute a massive pipeline project with several other GCC countries.

I posted this in some thread like this some months ago.

I guess lets wait and see.

EEZ has no implication on laying of underwater pipelines. EEZ are intentional waters and not territorial waters.
With only difference being, the host country has rights over natural resources in its EEZ ..eg fishing or oil drilling..
