He was talking about the altitude from mean sea level and not from the center of the Earth. And in Aerospace, we do not talk about geosynchronous orbit at 42k kms from earth's center but at 36k km from the sea level, because when we talk in terms of thrust required, we do not calculate the first 6.4 k kms ie the radius of the earth, because that would require a lot more thrust to escape the gravity, whereas in reality we don't require that much thrust. We just need o calculate the thrust required to push the satellite from 6.4k kms to 42k kms from the earth's center.

If we take your calculations, the satellite would keep moving away from earth at a very rapid pace and in a few hours escape the gravity and in no time will be lost in space.

If you're still in doubt I can do the calculations for you.

No way, are you serious, go back to my calculation. I PROVED it to you, with the period of the earth taken into account, 42 x 10^3 KM is the distance between the 2 point sources.

Yes, I never doubted that. But universally, no one uses the altitude above the earth's surface for reference. We want the "point," where gravitational force=infinite, or "0"

So at surface level, it is around 6x10^3 KM above infinite, hence it cannot be taken as the point. We need to take into account of the earth's center.

Hence the confusing thing was that this all started with 36k's being GSO. Which I took in to be 36K's above point source.

You are equating GSO and GTO.

GSO is a perfect circular orbit while GTO is a highly elliptical orbit.

He is using simple equations to prove it.

I instead use equations derived specially for the purpose of launching a satellite. Because the radius, gravitational pull etc are always constant we don't take the center of earth every time. But for general physics we always use center of gravitation.

From this, it is a circular orbit, with multiple planes, but with the center of rotation about the earth's center. Hence, GEO=GSO in terms of distance from the 2 objects in space.

What you say is correct, but the altitude of GSO from earth's surface is 35786 km.

GTO is an intermediate orbit which is reached for the satellite to be put in the GSO.
