India's highest rail ready

Having waited over two months for a chief guest to inaugurate it, the 18-km Anantnag-Qazigund railway track is all set to be finally inaugurated by the Prime Minister, Dr Manmohan Singh, on Wednesday.
Initially, the delay was owing to the wait for a date from the PM -- when he would be able to visit Jammu and Kashmir for the inauguration. Then October 18 was eventually fixed as the inaugural date. But then railway minister Mamata Banerjee sought a postponement as this date did not suit her. Now, at the October 28 opening, Congress president Mrs Sonia Gandhi is also likely to be present.

The 18-km stretch might not be very long in terms of geographical distance, but it is of huge socio-economic and political significance to the militancy-torn Kashmir Valley. The stretch is part of the government's Kashmir rail link, which has been declared a project of national importance.

Qazigund, about 80 km from Srinagar, is also significant as it will be the highest broad-gauge rail station in the country, at a height of 1,722 metres.
