You have to look at things in their own context.. Japan did not have a nuclear deterrent as China and Pakistan do now..
If India fights the US yes that will happen for sure, because India won't have friends to stand with it and will be alone and singled out by the US.. China has friends globally who have very strong mutual interests, in a war with China everyone will be a loser including the US, this is a deterrent on its own.. Pakistan being the best sidekick of China benefits from this also..
