It would be “inconceivable” for Australia not to join the United States should Washington take action to defend Taiwan, Australian Defence Minister Peter Dutton said on Saturday.

On Wednesday, US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken said the United States and its allies would take unspecified “action” if China were to use force to alter the status quo over Taiwan.

“It would be inconceivable that we wouldn’t support the US in an action if the US chose to take that action,” Dutton told The Australian newspaper in an interview.

“And, again, I think we should be very frank and honest about that, look at all of the facts and circumstances without pre-committing, and maybe there are circumstances where we wouldn’t take up that option, (but) I can’t conceive of those circumstances.”

China’s military said on Tuesday it conducted a combat readiness patrol in the direction of the Taiwan Strait, after its Defence Ministry condemned a visit by a US congressional delegation to Taiwan, the democratically governed island claimed by Beijing.

“(China’s) been very clear about their intent to go into Taiwan and we need to make sure that there is a high level of preparedness, a greater sense of deterrence by our capability, and that is how I think we put our country in a position of strength,” Dutton told the newspaper.

IMO, China must be quickly finding alternatives to its Raw Materials Supply from Australia
Here comes Afghanistan and other Stans Nations in play.

And USA must be doing homework to disrupt the Stans Nations so as to make it hard for China to get access to Raw Resources of middle Asian countries.

Peter Dutton backs down on previous insistence Australia would join US in Taiwan action

When directly asked about the prospect of arming Taiwan on Insiders, Mr Dutton said: "I think we do whatever we can to deter China from acts of aggression in our region."

"Let's be very clear. We want peace to prevail in our region, but you don't have that peace if you are arguing from a position of weakness," Mr Dutton said.

Federal Labor has criticised Mr Dutton for previously saying it would be "inconceivable" for Australia not to join military action if the US defended Taiwan.

"It would be completely wrong and wrongheaded for us to be answering such hypotheticals, and we think the Defence Minister made a mistake in that regard," Shadow Defence Minister Brendan O'Connor said on Sunday.

"I don't recall any defence minister in our history, certainly recent history, that would ever answer a question in the positive about a hypothetical question about whether we would find ourselves engaged in a full-blown war with a nuclear superpower."

Australia: We can’t rely on US military might, and our own is a joke

Australians have little sense of how grave their strategic circumstances potentially are. Our ability to inflict pain and cost on any serious aggressor is almost zero.

In that case, IF the US and Australia loose that war, there is a good chance Australia as we know it will cease to exist. Likely it would be force de-Anglofied by China.

Australia worries more than US over the end of Anglo dominance

I don't think China has the capability to de-Anglofy Australia but without the backing of the US and having a hostile China dominate the neighborhood, Australia will not enjoy the good life it's been enjoying for the past two centuries. So most likely, an administration that would lean towards compromise with China after a prolonged period of hardship would probably come to power and make amends with Beijing so that they could co-exist within a new regional order.

Thanks for your clarificaton.

Just being sincerely curious; What is the Chinese political tradition historically, for dealing with groups of people that are either hostile or non-cooperative to the administrative policies?

If i take Spain as an example, you had a huge inquisition in 1500s when christians took over muslims controlled areas. The spanish crown simply felt it couldnt trust muslims and jews to be ardently loyal to the King so they were either force converted, expelled or killed en masse.

Depends. Chinese history can be quite brutal when it comes down to putting down rebellions. But as far as occupying and annexing Australia, I don't think China has the desire for that. As long as Australia is neutralized and won't stand in the way of China's commercial empire, then I don't see China doing much more to Australia than maybe sanctions.

US has a huge market for Raw materials and thus US will not allow Aus to go cease

China have no plan to plant Chinese flag in Australia.

China have hands full with internal economy growth and local politics ie south China see nations. Japan etc.
