In India 7 yrs in jail for eating beef; cops can raid on mere suspicion

burma banned beef? are you sure?

The Cow is sacred not only for Hindus but Buddhist too and yes at one point cow slaughter was banned in Burma.

In 1885, Ledi Sayadaw, a prominent Buddhist monk wrote the Nwa-myitta-sa a poetic prose letter that argued that Burmese Buddhists should not kill cattle and eat beef, since Burmese farmers depended on them as beasts of burden to maintain their livelihoods, that the marketing of beef for human consumption threatened the extiction of buffalo and cattle and that the practice and was ecologically unsound.[29] He subsequently led successful beef boycotts during the colonial era, despite the presence of beef eating among locals and influenced a generation of Burmese nationalists in adopting this stance.[29]

On 29 August 1961, the Burmese Parliament passed the State Religion Promotion Act of 1961, which explicitly banned the slaughtering of cattle nationwide (beef became known as todo tha (တိုးတိုးသား); lit. hush hush meat).[30] Religious groups, such as Muslims, were required to apply for exemption licences to slaughter cattle on religious holidays. This ban was repealed a year later, after Ne Win led a coup d'état and declared martial law in the country.

In fact I was just reading a article last week on another south east asian country which has banned slaughter of cow within a certain distance from Buddhist temples im trying to find the article now.

.
so hindus should not eat pork either by your religion sensitivities. How about 7 years for those who eat pork as well?

in a secular state all religion sensitivites are respected....hinduism is a religion as well...

.
Big difference.

- Muslims think that pigs are dirty animals, so they themselves don't want to eat it. But they don't care if non-Muslims eat it or not.

- Hindus think that cows are holy animals, and this anti-beef law is going to stop everyone in the state from eating beef, even non-Hindus.

India is the country of Hinduism what do you expect? you think they'll let you drink, smoke or eat pork in in the gulf countries especially KSA and Qatar?

or how about the Taliban run parts of Pakistan and Afghanistan do you think you could eat pork and not be punished for being Haram?

Don't drag the Buddhists into this buddy...Many Chinese are Buddhists yet u can eat Beef Chow Fun anywhere in China or Singapore. Hell I've even had beef in Thailand, which is very very Buddhist in nature.

Instead of declaring war against the rampant corruption thats been plaguing the country on both a domestic and global scale, Mr Singh's government chooses to distract the public by declaring war against beef. Then what about the Muslims, Christians, tourists and all the other non-Hindu folk in India?

Okay so beef's out of India now....shouldn't the law be 'no slaughter of cows and no consumption of pork'? Since the second largest group is Islamic and they don't eat pork, yet I am aware that pork is consumed heavily in many parts of India, especially in the south. Shouldn't the ban extend to the slaughter of pigs too? Why be sensitive to the needs of just one community and completely neglect the other??

And what about tourists? Indian tourism industry is hardly developed for all kinds of reasons - bad infrastructure, long airport waits, rude officials, ridiculous smoking bans etc etc that already dissuade many tourists from visiting. Don't say its not true, there are so many people of Indian origin who refuse to visit their ancestral home for reasons I've given above. This is just gonna make it worse.

At this rate, I'm taking my tourist dollars to Pakistan or China.:help:

It's a bit rich for the Chinese to point fingers when their own history had Chinese emperors who banned killing cows.

You realize that most Hindus are vegetarian...although there are some who indulge in Chicken, Mutton & Fish.

That was done because cattle were valuable workforce for plowing fields back during the Song and Ming Dynasty. Beef is still not as popular as pork in China today.

India is the birth place of Hinduism, its neither a country governed on Hindu laws nor is it a country created only for Hindus. U can't compare it to anti-pork laws in Pakistan because Pakistan was created as a country for the Muslims of British India. Two different nations with 2 very different concepts. Officially, India is secular while Pakistan is known internationally as the Islamic Republic of Pakistan. So I'm bound to expect two different sets of laws. Besides, India has a gigantic Muslim minority which is bigger than the entire population of Indonesia. Pakistan's Hindu minority population wouldn't be enough to fill up a suburb in Singapore. So u cant compare both - like comparing apples and oranges.

This law is a pile of crap and seriously I'm laughing my *** off reading about this.

Buddy did you read the article? where is this taking place what state? Madhya Pradash right and last time I checked i could still eat beef in places like Goa, Kerela etc.

See for the sake of communal harmony the killing of the cow in some places such as Gujarat and MP (which holds many sacred sites to Hindus) i will support the ban and what about the Jains? you think they would like people to slaughter cows?

Heck why did the Moghuls even ban it? during their rule.

Yeah I heard. If I am not wrong, China has the largest pork reserve.

Actually not for that sole purpose it was done for other reasons also. Beef is popular too in places like Kerela and Goa you can get a fine Beef curry.

The beef taboo comes from a Chinese perspective that relates the respect for animal life and vegetarianism (ideas shared by Buddhism, Confucianism and Daoism, and state protection for draught animals.[40] In Chinese society, only ethnic and religious groups not fully assimilated (such as the Muslim Huis and the Miao) and foreigners consumed this meat.[40] This taboo, among Han Chinese, led Chinese Muslims to create a niche for themselves as butchers who specialized in slaughtering oxen and buffalo.

Some worshippers of Guan Yin do not eat beef.[42] Occasionally, some cows weeping before slaughter, and they are often released to temples nearby

.
No offence dude, but I prefer travelers over tourists any day. Also I don't think tourists are coming to India to eat beef.

No certainly not..definitely no tourist is gonna head to India specifically to eat beef...but it'll be such an odd pain in the *** to walk into a 1/2 empty Mac's and only see chicken on the menu.

Wait, what about Mac's?? Double cheeseburgers and Big Mac's and all those good stuff?? Beef can still be sold in there I hope? :coffee:

.
Mcdonald stores would be on fire if they even dared sell beef in India but they too smart for that they knew it from the word go :agree:

Oh thanks for pointing that out..its just in certain states then. Then its not so bad. But mmmm....okay I can appreciate the reason you have given for the ban in those states, communal harmony and all, but I'm not sure if this is the best approach to ensure there is no disruption to peace. People need to be educated to have more tolerance for each other and learn to live together...banning this and that...I don't think thats the way to go.

Oh well, as long as it doesn't touch Goa, I'm a happy camper.

Dude u gotta be kidding?!?! Then what do they sell besides chicken???? Why would they even operate in India if they can't sell half the things on the menu?? Or do they have a substitute for beef?
