Imran slams hero’s welcome for Qadri

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Imran Khan condemned Malik Mumtaz Qadri’s, the man who gunned down Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer, reception as a hero on the premises of the Anti Terrorism Court, Rawalpindi.

“Extremism and radicalism have penetrated our society deeply,” he said, adding that it is especially harmful for youths.

While talking to The Express Tribune via phone, he said our society has become polarised. It is highly condemnable that everyone fulfills their wishes as they see fit, he said. “Elements like Qadri are under the impression that Islam is under threat and act accordingly,” he added.

“Salmaan Taseer never demanded that the blasphemy laws be repealed; rather he spoke against their misuse. He was gunned down because of the misperception that he is anti-Islamic and anti-blasphemy laws,” Imran Khan said

Anti-Islamic perceptions developed after the war on terror by USA, he said, adding that suicide attacks against the government occur because of polarisation in society which has fostered the thought that the government is working with the US and is anti-Islam.

He said tribal elders and ANP leaders, who announced their support for Pakistan, have also been blown-up in suicide attacks since they too were perceived as anti-Islam. Due to polarisation in society, people like Faisal Shahzad have attacked the US since they view America’s war on terror as a threat to Islam.

The government is perceived as a puppet being run by anti-Islamic forces, the PTI chief said. A credible government is essential in order to eradicate radicalisation and extremism. The government will stop being perceived as anti-Islamic if the war on terror would end, he added.

Qadri’s action has created fear in society, Khan said, adding that Qadri should have followed the law but since he did not, he should be treated like any other murderer.

Yes, probably it would have been easier for Governor Taseer to ask for a meaningful changes in the Blasphemy Law if there was peace in Pakistan's northwest. There has been too much bloodshed both in Afghanistan and in Pakistan since 2001 and that has affected a large number of people directly or indirectly.

Sherry Rehman next on hitlist--

slamabad: Several clerics have issued fatwas against former Pakistani minister Sherry Rehman and declared her an infidel for calling for changes in the blasphemy law, prompting civil society activists to register a complaint with police in the port city of Karachi today.

Media reports said the imam of Sultan Masjid, one of Karachi's biggest mosques, declared Rehman a 'kaafir' (infidel) and 'wajib-ul-qatl' (fit to be killed) while delivering a sermon after the Friday prayers.

The mosque has close ties to the Saudi Arabian government.

Islamic hardliners who organised a massive rally in Karachi today also issued a pamphlet that named Rehman as a person who "has invoked the religious honour of Pakistan's Muslims" for calling for changes in the blasphemy law.

The threats came days after a police guard gunned down Punjab Governor Salmaan Taseer for criticising the blasphemy law.

Civil society activists today filed a complaint against the imam of Sultan Masjid at the Darakhsan police station in Karachi.

The complaint was registered on behalf of Rehman, a senior leader of the Pakistan People's Party, Salmaan Taseer's son Shaan Taseer and journalist Ali Chishti.

In the complaint, the civil society activists alleged that the imam of Sultan Masjid had also lauded Mumtaz Qadri, the policeman who assassinated Salmaan Taseer.

Chishti told the media that civil society groups feared for Rehman's life following the murder of the Punjab Governor.

The civil society activists said they were proud to be Muslims but rejected murdering people in the name of Islam.

Hardliners have been gunning for Rehman since she tabled a private bill in parliament to remove the mandatory death sentence for blasphemy.

Reports have said Rehman has been facing pressure from within the PPP to leave Pakistan for her own security.

Security has been enhanced at Rehman's residence in Karachi and she has told the media she will not leave Pakistan.

2) he say the late Governor wanted the Laws stopped from being abused and has indirectly saided that .... he support that the laws are not repealed....

Mr.Khan ... absolutly like a politician played to the galleries ......

sorry but i see only Musharraf as the person can improve Paksitan.

What Imran Khan knows about Islam? He had been all the life characterless in his personal life like seetawhite , etc. How can he interpret Islam ? Salman Taseer tried to buldose the court of law by trying to get a presidential pardon to a proven convict of insulting our holy prophet (p.b.u.h). He called the Black law to such an instrument which detters the blasphemy in our country . He should have talked to imrove its implementation procedure . His own party men were against his point of view. Babar Awan said. WE will not change this law.
Prime Minister said the same. Dont make it a fight for extremists and liberals . Iam sure it is not . Many liberals like me are not with Taseers thoughts .
