What's new

I'm looking for a dog!

D Dog is a perfect companion- plus it carries a concealed knife-

.
I'll try to explain. Humans recognize a boss. Dogs recognize a master.

The person who takes the dog out for a walk, feeds him, provides food, water and shelter, plays with him in the outdoors, is the master of the dog. Now, as you said, if you can get somebody else to do that for you, then the dog will recognize him as master and will be faithful towards him. If the dog spends enough time with the household, then the dog becomes attached to the family as well. But that is not your case. So, if you are okay with that, then go ahead.

Since that person will also be living inside the house, it will serve my purpose. What do you think?

Will cost at-least 10% of your income of you keep proper check

I am not looking for an obedient dog, I just want that when I go to sleep at night, I can unchain him and he would atleast alert me if somebody tries to break in. My house has a lot of agricultural land on the back side and the only think separating them is an 8 foot wall.

Also note, that I have enough space outside my house and he can be taken to a walk or roam freely by himself.

Dogs don't 'roam freely by himself'

They need training and constant human support. They need to be taught who is friends and family and who is not. If you keep your dog unchained, then you risk getting him poisoned. People will throw in food or something to knock your dog out. Or very worst case, they might hit him with a bullet or tranquilizer. If you really want dogs, get at least a pair like Doberman, German Shepherd or Rottweiler.

But you will always need to provide human input to them, you will need to take care of them and adore them.

If you can't do that, then either get a good rifle and become a good marksmen or hire a guard.

Iam saying, think about it, give it some time, I told you some basic facts. Probably you should look up in the internet about some more information too. Don't rush yourself into it. Then take a decision. I cannot possible how is the setup in your household would be. So, I cannot comment on that. Take an informed decision, that's all.

Hi All,

I'm looking for a guard dog. Could you all suggest what is the best breed to guard my house?

Pls note I don't want a pet, nor am I interested in spending a lot of time with it. And ideally it should suffice with very less maintainance.

Pls suggest.

I recently got a German Alsatian. They are living things so your "low maintainance" does not quite fit. They need daily walks, food, cleaning etc. If you can't do that please don't bother getting a dog.

Thanks. Yeah, I have only started my research. Will give it a long thought and consult different people, see some guard dog breeds and only then I will take a decision.

Thanks, can you post some pictures? And how much does it costs?

I strongly disrecommend it. Judging by your posts, you are not fit to own any animal.

How about Kangal's, those are originally shepherd dogs from central Asia, they dont need you to go for a walk as long as they are kept outside and they are huge and intimidating.
But they are quite expensive as far as i know, you have to import them from Turkey, its not a very widespread breed.

Oh my gawd. Why did I not find out about these before? I love the look of those things. I am going to look into this breed and I might get back to you if I decide to go for this monster. Only thing is what do I do the German Alsatian I already got.

Ps. Please find out what prices they are and PM me. If the price is right I might go for it. Shipping to UK can't be that expensive as long as the breed is legally allowed into UK.

Then you are judging it wrong, I am a bird enthusiast and keep a lot of birds including African Grays, Eclectus and Galahs.

I will. Mine is only about 6 months. That way it gets trained around me. It cost me £300 but came with full medical certification.

Look dude, dogs are highly intelligent animals and require affection. If you're planning to hire a caretaker for it then I will suggest against it. You will never be his alpha and in turn, never own it.

A quick search gave me the contact data of breeders in UK so you dont have to import them which probably will be a lot cheaper for you.

But mind you, those are not city dogs, you might face difficulties if you want to keep it in a appartment.
Read this part.

Temperamentally, he is proud, independent and can be aloof with strangers but intensely loyal to his master with whom he will forge a strong bond. He can be territorial and dominant towards other dogs but he is not aggressive by nature though he should possess the courage and physical strength to fight wolves and other predators.
