Is the IDEAS 2008 still on? Heard DEPO was having a lot of last minute cancellations due to the deteriorating security situation and they might decide to call it off this year.

KARACHI, Pakistan - Organizers of Pakistan's fifth biannual International Defence Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) expect to attract more than 35,000 visitors and buyers from about 100 countries to the Nov. 24-28 event.

Speakers from China, Italy, Turkey and the United States will appear, including two of Pakistan's foremost defense analysts and commentators, Pervaiz Iqbal Cheema, head of the Islamabad Policy Research Institute, and Shireen Mazari of the Institute of Strategic Studies, Islamabad.

The majority of Pakistan's indigenous defense companies are expected to be present, including Pakistan Ordnance Factories, Heavy Industries Taxila, and conglomerates such as the National Engineering & Scientific Commission and Global Industrial Defence Solutions.

A large number of exhibitors from China, Turkey and other foreign companies are expected to be present, especially those linked to ongoing Pakistani military procurement programs.

Analysts will be closely watching developments to see if long-speculated deals will be announced. Of particular note is the deal for the Navy's next-generation submarine. The HDW Type-214, which has already been selected by Greece, South Korea and close Pakistani ally Turkey, was the expected winner. There also may be movement on a deal for a Western engine to power the Air Force's next future multirole combat aircraft, the JF-17 Thunder.

The current Russian-made Kilmov RD-93 is deemed unsatisfactory and will only power the first 50 aircraft. It is believed the Snecma M-52-P2 that powered the Dassault Mirage 2000 series of fighters is the Western engine in question.

Exhibitors at IDEAS2008 will be divided into nine categories:

■ Weapons and ammunition - turrets.

■ Vehicles - aircraft and drones/UAVs.

■ Battlefield management/C4ISTAR and target acquisition.

■ Training and simulation - support, protection, operational logistics.

■ Special equipment - engineering works, crossing, terrain clearance, homeland security, peacekeeping, urban operations.

■ Industrial and logistics support.

■ Industry sectors involved.

■ Services.

■ Naval ships and submarines.

IDEAS2006 attracted foreign delegations from 44 countries and exhibitors from 27 countries. Chinese and Turkish companies were heavily represented in reflection of the close military and political ties between those countries and Pakistan.

Since the first IDEAS was held in 2000, the number of exhibitors has nearly doubled to 221 companies from 125. Of the companies exhibiting in 2006, 73 were domestic and 148 foreign. Visitors more than doubled over this period to 30,000 who attended IDEAS2006.

IDEAS will culminate in a joint forces display, which will showcase some of the capabilities of the Pakistani armed forces, and is one of the most impressive in the region.

I am not sure what to make of the M53-P2 news. Adding a western engine may make things fairly expensive however the French may be willing to offer Pakistan a decent package owing to the potential for follow on orders. However given the fact that WS-13 is being developed by the Chinese, I am not too sure if this is really going to happen.

additionally i am not too sure of the WS-13 development. i have not read or heard anything about its progress/development for atleast 1-yr. to me the SNECMA deal will be the better option (tried and tested) albeit more costly.

Arms fair opens today
By Jamil Khan

KARACHI: The five-day event of arms, ammunition and combat equipments, International Defense Exhibition and Seminar (IDEAS) 2008 will begin today (Monday) with the aim to be one of the biggest events in the history of Pakistan.

Around 94 local firms are participating in the event along with hundreds of companies from 58 different countries. IDEAS is an exhibition that brings together local and international manufactures and buyers at the Expo Centre to view the finest defence materials that give maximum security to law enforcement agencies including police, rangers and army officials of the five corps.

Defence Export Promotion Organization (DEPO) Director General Major General Muhammad Farooq briefed the media and highlighted the salient features of the exhibition on Sunday.

“The platform of IDEAS 2008 provides an opportunity to demonstrate Pakistan’s defence capabilities, technical strengths and other related skills, training and services. It gives the chance to various groups to explore the possibility for cooperation and joint ventures and collaboration in the field of defence production,” he said.

Farooq mentioned that the response from foreign and local firms in the current exhibition was higher when compared to the IDEAS that was held in 2006. Around 221 leading defence manufacturers from 27 different countries took part in the event, of which 148 foreign and 73 domestic companies also displayed their products.

“This year we booked all the space available at the Expo Center Karachi to accommodate 256 defence companies from 58 countries from North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Far East, China, Turkey and Africa,” he said.

Shedding light on the objective of IDEAS 2008, he said that Pakistan has proved its organizational skills by arranging such a huge event in Karachi. “The major objective of holding such events is to build Pakistan’s image as a moderate, tolerant and cooperative nation that is committed to boost its defence capacity,” he said.

He, however, said that other features the event is holding seminars and meetings between the delegates form within and outside Pakistani firms. DG Farooq said that they were adopting self-reliant options when it came to holding such projects and not taking a single penny from the national exchequer. “We don’t want to be a burden on the public’s money,” he said.

He also announced that the most important feature of the current exhibition was displaying, for the first time, the JF-17 Thunder fighter plane, which is a proud co-production of the Pakistan Defence Industry and China.

To a question he stated that during the previous exhibitions, various foreign delegates showed an interest in the indigenous products including the Al-Khalid tank, however, he added that currently the local defence industry is putting all its effort into addressing the local orders of the Pakistan Army and making it self-sufficient.

He appreciated the support rendered by the armed forces, the federal, provincial and city government as well as the people of Karachi for their warm hearted hospitality, help and support wherever it was needed in the event.

The exhibition will be held from 5am to 10am, the roads surrounding the Expo Center will be sealed for all traffic expect the delegates and visitors who have been issued passes by the organizers.
