IAF’s SA-8s SAM failed repeatedly

In a joint exercise by Indian Air Force (IAF) and DRDO, a Russian short range surface-to-air missile was test fired from a defence base off the Odisha coast on Wednesday. The OSA-AK missile reportedly failed to hit a tow body suspended from a pilot less target aircraft (PTA) as it fell down before reaching the target.

Sources said air force personnel conducted the test, a part of target simulation exercise in the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur on sea during noon.

The missile was fired from the launching complex – III and the PTA was flown from the launching -II of the ITR.

While three rounds of the missile were fired at 11.25 am, 11.45 am and 12.45 pm, the missile was to hit the tow body during the third attempt.

“The missile fell down immediately after take off. Though in initial two attempts the 10-km range missile travelled a certain distance, but during the target simulation exercise it failed to reach the target,” said a source.

It was the third attempt in last three days which also proved futile.

While on Monday the pilot less target aircraft fell down before releasing the tow body and flying for a stipulated period due to technical snags, a similar attempt on Tuesday also failed as the missile could not be fired.

A defence official said the aim and objective of the exercise was to gauge the effectiveness of the missile and killing capabilities mid air.

The Russia-manufactured missile has already been procured by India for the IAF fighter air-crafts.

OSA-AK missile has been developed to be used against aircrafts, surface-to-air missiles and air-to-air missiles.

The missile has already been inducted in the army and it was first user trial by the IAF.

Sources added that if all the preparations go according to the plan, another exercise will be conducted within a day or two.

Thereafter, the missile would be fired from the fighter air crafts targeting the PTA.

Are the new Spyder SAMs there to replace those Russian SAMs or to supplement our air defences?

Actually TRISHUL was supposedly to replace India’s Russian-made OSA-AKM/SA-8 Gecko and ZRK-BD Strela-10M/ SA-13 Gopher SAM systems. because of DRDO's failure now SPYDER will replace it.

. . .
The OSA is a time proven SAM system, does not really make sense to me that it failed twice. Maybe bad maintenance ?

Maybe because the re-lifed missiles are not up to spec..they came straight from Ivan and Ivan's ability to manufacture credibly is failing.

@selvan33 sir why is this sam failing repeatedly?

Actually dude, there is no clear data saying the technical defaults found in that. and also its a very good system and tested platform but IAF and DRDO didn't disclose any details regarding this. but if you noticed on thing that in previous test missile moved from launcher but it cannot able to reach its target, but in later test the missile cannot be fired. it may be due to technical difficulty because of poor maintence but they tested OSA AK ONLY WHICH IS THE LATEST VERSION IN SA 8. So chance for poor maintenence is also less. but anyhow they are analysing the reason and surely you can expect another trials in within a week. But anyhow SPYDER is going to replace it. so no problem. And one thing don't call me a sir dude.

Actually IA has even rejected local rifles. Now they have embarked on a massive import. No, they don't seem capable of making any worthwhile arm/eqpt.

I think syder is QR medium range SAM and this one is QR short range SAM. So different group.

AFAIK Trishul project was scrapped decades ago.

Yes and the standard to judge that is an opinion of Bangladeshi troll who's expertise are only know for cheer-leading

This was bound to happen. Wonder why this failure is being propagated big time in media. probably to import new systems to replace these from a new vendor..?

Yes dude SPYDER is QR SAM but we are going to have both the short range and medium range750 Python-5 and 750 Derbymissiles( Python>15 km; Derby>35 km ).
no TRISHUL project was officially ended in the last quarter of 2008 only and that was the initial project started to replace SA 8.

As far as i know DRDO was working with French on QRSAM Maitree Missile to replace SA-8 SAM of Indian Army ..

You guys are forgetting this!

The Maitri missile project is a next-generation quick-reaction Surface-to-Air Missile (QRSAM) with a lethal hundred per cent kill probability under development by India's Defence Research and Development Organisation. It is a short-range (15 km, 9.3 mi) surface-to-air point defense missile system.

Successor to TRISHUL. Deal was concluded this year!

On 14 February 2013,India and France concluded negotiations on the Short Range Surface to Air Missile nearly worth of $6 billion during the talks between French President Francois Hollande and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh

Development of the missile is expected to be completed within three years of the project go-ahead, when initial testing will commence. Over 1000 missiles are expected to be produced for the Indian Army, Air Force and Navy.

So what buddy. Everyone knows about that. But one correction. Its not a successor of trishul. Its a blend of MICA and TRISHUL. And all the important systems that includes active homing-head, thrust vector control, terminal guidance system and composites for a modified propulsion system for the missile will be done by MBDA only. And later they have to transfer technology to DRDL for indian development. So till that time we need a gap filler. Dont worry this will take another five years if it goes as per plan for MAITRI development or may be extended 2 more years too.
