How could India / Pak / B'Desh manufacturing labour compete with China's?

All the hate between Chinese and Indians is counter productive. Imagine the good both countries could do id they could learn from each other...

it would be allot more than what is being accomplished by throwing mud at each others faces.

India and China both have major issues to overcome, maybe we can talk about what we can teach the other in order to improve relations.....

I grew up watching . Bruce Lee films and decided to train martial arts. one of my training partners is Chinese. Hes awesome, and hes very kind and humble (he could probably beat 90%+ of people out there no problem).

I consider myself fortunate to know him. What would I have learned or gained by being a jerk to him? Nothing at all.

Respect and understanding can achieve allot more than distrust and anger.

If Modi get's elected then India and China will be friends it's up to you to decide.

I am aware of all Indian's advantage you mentioned. What I don't agree with a lot of Indian members here is that I don't think you can skip labor intensive manufacturing and be a service based developed country. I know service based economy have higher margines but it won't absort a lot of unskilled workers, which all developing countries share in common. Labor intensive works like Foxconn factories, regardless how bad it is, is the only way to pull huge number of really poor people out of abject poverty.BTW, Chinese started large industrial economic reform in 1991 (Symbolized by the openning of Shanghai Stock Exchange in 1991. The 1978 reform was only on agricultural sector to give farmers freedom on how their manage their land. A few cities like Shenzhen were picked in 1980s to experiment capitalism, and normal Chinese are not allowed to enter these cities without special permission.

To say, that there must be a Foxconn in the life of a nation ... for it to emerge out of poverty, is not true.

There is not much of a difference between in the growth rates between China and India .... and India does it without going thru the Foxconn sh*t. In fact because too many "ghost cities" built ..... China's growth could actually decline to 6.2%

LOL, what a lie.

1990 - China GDP : India GDP - 1 : 1
2000 - China GDP : India GDP - 2 : 1
2010 - China GDP : India GDP - 4 : 1

And it could easily have been 8:1, if CPC forced each chinese to donate one kidney and 10 units of blood every week.

Damn .... CPC is being too generous. Chinese hardly deserve this generosity.

Typical Indian 7%er bribe taker. How dare you speak for the children breaking rocks and hauling dirt at the Commonwealth Games instead of going to school.

Every Indian here is part of the bribe taking elite class, because only 7% of Indians can go online. They cannot speak for the children being forced to haul dirt.

You do have some points which are very similar to what we used to see publicity by Western media during Commonwealth games. and I can share my local experience in India with whatever I have been reading in economic news etc. and as Pakistan is the country where 98% population are Muslim, Hindus/ Sikhs are almost none there as most of them have been converted to Islam since 1947, and whoever Pakistani Christian I met in Australia, they also keep Muslim name in place of having an English name. Therefore, I would like to request our honourable members of this forum not to get angry if I say something about poverty of India which also has religious factor also.

What I said before, even till the time of 1991, per capita income of India was above to that of China on PPP and since then India registered growth rate of around 7% but China had above 10% growth rate. And by growth of 7%, Indian economy would be around 4 times in 2011 to 1991 level. But by 10% growth, Chinese GDP would be 8 times till 2011 to its level of 1991. And also, population of India was around 950mil in 1991 which was increased by 1.4% growth rate to 1.2billion in 2011 while due to one child policy of China, population of China reduced from 1.35billion in 1991 to around 1.31 billion in 2011. So GDP per capita on PPP of India was around $3,500 in 2010 while that of China was around $7,700 that year, around 2.2 times to Indian per capita GDP on PPP. Then why can’t India reduce it’s population and have more investments on infrastructure in India to catch up with CHina?

(Note: total population of India below poverty line is around 25% right now, 300mil to total 1.2 billion population, therefore, if India might have stopped its population to the level of even 1991 also then there might not be any poverty in India as per their current way of measurement.)

I would now share my local experience in India in between 1990 to 2002, during the time I lived there. As we may discuss every key issue on forum so I would dare to say that it has been policy of only Muslim community of India to have 8 to 10 kids and the time they become just 6-7 year old, they are sent to tea shops/ small shops etc to work and earn money for their parents. If I dare to say, then only muslim community of India was behind rapid growth of population during last over 30 years as more the kids they have, more their parents may put them on small shops and earn through them. Also their religious leaders mainly worry to increase muslim population of India to gain political advantage in local politics. And, everyone of Indian media knows that only “Minority Politics”, with concern of Muslim votes only, was always the reason why democratic India couldn’t take any proper action to reduce Indian population, similar to one child policy of China.
(my father was a class one officer and when he was posted in Fatehpur district of UP in early 90s, I even saw that poor people living in Muslim colonies were being continuously watched whether they are adopting family planning by different muslim organisation, to make sure every family living in poor muslim colonies would have over 8 to 10 kids.) it may be the reason why population ratio of Muslims in India was around 8% in 1947 which has now increased to around 18% in 2011, while population ratio of Hindus was 87% to total Indian population in 1947 which has reduced to just around 78% in 2011 in India.

So now India is giving reservation to Muslims from 2012, in institutes and government jobs, as majority of their Muslim's new generation isn’t competent enough to face different competitions.:)

To say, that there must be a Foxconn in the life of a nation ... for it to emerge out of poverty, is not true.

So far there's no counter example. England had this, US had this, Japan had this and now China. In addition, Foxconn is a huge manufacture and it has factory in India as well. You can not use a few bad incidents to generalize the entire picture. Afterall, if they don't like it, they can quit for a better job. The news makes it sound like a forced labor.

There is not much of a difference between in the growth rates between China and India .... and India does it without going thru the Foxconn sh*t. In fact because too many "ghost cities" built ..... China's growth could actually decline to 6.2%

I don't give a sh*t to GDP growth, which is always a myth to me. In term of reducing poverty, China is doing way better than any of the developing countries, including India.

Please talk to me as I have good knowledge in economics. GDP per capita on PPP of India and China was almost same till 1991, making Chinese total GDP on PPP around 1.4 times to that of India in 1991, as population of India was around 950million in 1991 and that of China was 1.35billion in 1991. (per capita income of India was well maintained above to that of China till 1991).
http://www.dbresearch.de/PROD/DBR_INTERNET_DE-PROD/PROD0000000000192108.pdf

And here a simple calculation, with over 10% growth rate, Chinese GDP doubled by 7 years, 4 times by 14 years and it’s now 8 times in 20 years till 2010. While with around 7% growth rate, India’s GDP could be doubled by 10 years and would be around just 4 times by 2011 to 1991 level. And as population of India increased by 25% in between 1991 to 2011, due to around 1.4% growth rate during this period, while that of China was even reduced due to their one child policy, GDP per capita of China could be 2.2 times to that of India by 2010. Isn’t very hard mathematical calculation to understand? :)

(And as Yuan also faced appreciation on the back of high export while Indian rupees could hardly maintain its level w.r.t to US$ during last 8-9 years. therefore in ‘real’/ 'current exchange rates' term, GDP per capita of China is around 3.5 times to that of India by 2010. have a look as below:

http://www.indexmundi.com/xrates/graph.aspx?c1=INR&c2=USD&days=3650

but it was interesting to see how Pakistan's currency moved during last 10 years

Thanks and Regards

what do you say about the fact that only 7% of Indians are allowed to use the internet, so most Indians online are part of the top elite?

When will we hear voices from the real people of India?

You have choice to select 'Real people' of India, either you say they are the 350 million middle class or, they are those 800million who get jobs due to the middle class people of India.

And here, Indian middle class still pay taxes to feed their poor, (as only 8% people pay tax in India), but why don’t you talk to Chinese and Western middle class to make them agreed to pay tax for Indian ‘real people’ also? Its the middle class of India who are taking the country higher and Indian feeding lower class, (though different subsidies and giving them jobs), not the Chinese or Western middle class who just laugh on the Indian poor? :agree:

that's the same trickle down BS that has failed for the past decade.

Bangladesh's manufacturing sector is still very weak.

But the question is ... will Bangadesh accept the "n-hexane" manufacturing .... or look for better solutions.

And it's not just about "n-hexane" .... will you accept China-level pollutions, china-level acute water scarcity, mining deaths ... cadmium in the water you drink and melamine in the milk. And will the BD press be willing to put all this under the carpet.

Korea-style manufacturing is perhaps a better solution for Bangladesh .... and actually, ditto for India and Pakistan too.
