HEC to offer 10,000 PhD scholarships for USA

Sorry but a lot of IIT grads are now returning to India and get appointment as faculties in either new IITs or old prominent IITs. A lot of them also go on to become faculty of STEM subjects in American colleges like MIT,CALTECH,GEORGIA tech etc. In fact I know couple of faculties that are an alumnus of my college IITM.
Pakistan on the other hand doesn't feature in the list,I mean it's rare to find a Pakistani prof in STEM in MIT etc
Give over with your exaggerations, your IITs are comparable to LUMS, Qaid-e-Azam uni, NUST, COMSAT etc, please do not mention them in the same sentence as MIT or you will become the laughing stock of this forum.Kudos sir

Many times when a person does PHD research their work is owned by University in many cases, it would have been better had the existing Pakistani University standards were boosted by latest equipment and tech , so the research we did stayed ownership of Pakistan , in PHD domain

If my understanding is incorrect please correct me

But the focus should be on "Standard" of University

So if 10,000 PHD scientist go to USA , they might do some research and write paper and thesis may be they might even discover some things. Since US university will own the rights to research done they might benefit from its sales to their private sector

Innovation in Pakistan it self would not benefit directly

Responsibility of the Nation
  • Raise standard of Universities to match that of Europe's best (not even US)
  • Ensure the latest books , and research material is present in University
  • Ensure the PHD students have high quality mentor-ship
  • Any new patents developed should be owned by University / PHD student of Pakistan
  • Any collaboration with USA should be done only if the research benefits come back to Pakistan if the ideas are used by commercial company
  • There should be a good understanding on how the commercialization of idea would benefit Pakistan
  • If PHD student gets offer to work in USA , there should be a plan to recover the education cost invested by Pakistan (if they do not return back) 100,000 USD-200,000 USD cost

Why not bring 50 top US professors in Pakistan instead of sending 10,000 Pakistanis to the US? Which will be economical and easier?

HEC to offer 10,000 PhD scholarships for US

ISLAMABAD: The Higher Education Commission (HEC) will send 10,000 scholars to the United States for PhD studies in next 10 years.

These scholars will get admissions in agriculture and food security, medical and allied health sciences, energy, water, climate change, advanced digital technology among others.

This was stated by Minister for Planning, Development and Reforms Ahsan Iqbal while explaining the Pakistan-US Knowledge Corridor during a video conference session with vice chancellors from across the country on Wednesday.

The HEC chairman, Dr. Mukhtar Ahmed and executive director Dr. Arshad Ali, were also present on the occasion.

The Pakistan-US Corridor was conceptualized in June 2015 as a result of US-Pakistan Education, Science and Technology working group under the bilateral strategic dialogue.

The minister said that 10,000 PhDs educated in the best US would give spectacular results. “The government is committed to increasing access to higher education and for that purpose sub-campuses and virtual campuses are being established at district level so as to enable aspiring students to gain higher education at their doorstep.”

Dr Mukhtar Ahmed gave an overview of HEC’s efforts for developing human resource and providing state-of-the-art facilities to the higher education institutions. Speaking to Dawn the HEC chairman said all vice chancellors had been directed to prepare students for admissions in top universities of the US.

“Under Pakistan-US Corridor, the students will be prepared in such a manner that they can get scholarships for US universities. In case, the students cannot receive scholarship but succeeded in getting themselves enrolled with top universities of the US, the HEC will bear their expenses,” the chairman said and added every year, at least 1,000 students will be sent to the US for pursing higher education.

Now these 10,000 people will need to make sure they understand the national cause behind their PHD's and they come back, not get distracted by the $$$$ and refuse to come back and accept jobs in the US. That is the key. They need to realize that they are needed for their country.

There is plenty of things starting to pop up where advance R&D will take place inside Pakistan, whether is Haer's electronics manufacturing, mobile manufacturing, apps, agriculture, construction, defense or the economy. The opportunity to create more PHD's from this batch of 10,000 people is there in every sector.

I did not go to IIT's, more like I couldn't, It remains one of the most difficult college to get into. But i did get decent enough education that I won't refer to you or anyone else's nationality in a derogatory fashion, I , but please do indulge me with some references, which puts any of your colleges close to IIT.
In any case MIT being rated at Rank 1
and IIT Bombay at Rank 32
and NUST at Rank 340th

IIT Bombay trails MIT by 31 Places, and NUST trails the same IIT Bombay by a whopping 308 places.

So now please do explain the two statments in relative terms
IIT Bombay (32) in league of MIT (1)
NUST (340) in League of IIT (32)

Well sending a group of lads to Britain or US is brilliant , although I am not sure why anyone would want to go to US when you have good old oxford in England. For one thing they would be learning proper English , as the Queen wishes the world to speak, and that itself is the greatest reason to go get educated in good old England.

Now as I pointed before , a mere small thought which should provoke a response in even the dullest of minds. What will happen to these Professional Degree holders once they conclude their honorable education under the watch of her majesty's Chancellors & Deans of education. Why would any subject desire to leave the realm of her Majesty to go back to a far distant land?, which may have been their own home land at one point in time. Furthermore, most of the wonderful sites in some of the most prominent Pakistani institutes of culture, government and civilian service have exactly zero number of positions offered to any potential candidate.

If it was not for Mr Musharraf, a man who many intellects in England felt had the proper idea, to educate and motivate a nation. One could argue if it was not for his effort, most Republic of Pakistan's government websites would be printed on a paper only. After departure Mr Musharraf , I beg to state a prominent fact - undeniable by even the most blindest of all creatures. That fact is that no one updates the websites in Pakistan, as all the websites are at least 5-7 year old and rather primitive. This neglect has been going far too long , in the last 8 years and the culprits are of course certain families of low stature, who continue to haunt Pakistan.

The most admirable cause for the winners of the Masters degree is to perhaps seek service in her majesty's service in England. Of course some may challenge themselves to attempt to move to USA and that is also a possibility. Most of the higher institute of order and educated are occupied by people who do not understand the value of education and the tremendous benefit to the society of men.

The 10,000 souls that will venture on this long journey will have a bright future , however how would we know that these souls would one day not agree to return back and be content by driving a Suzuki Mehran. Overlooking the obvious fact that websites in Pakistan don't properly advertise the jobs.

One can always argue that it is no doubt in the benefit of Pakistan's society to help nurture the quality of its own Universities , or better idea is to collaborate with the Universities in her majesty's nation to raise the level of education in Pakistan. The Universities will continue to churn out generation after generation of educated people, provided they are supported with appropriate planning and investment. The benefits are wide spread as the Universities are incubation centers where people find their own identity in the world.

Perhaps it is a better idea to examine the qualities of the best Universities of the world , mold the universities of Pakistan in that order. A University will always stay in your own country, it will never migrate to a foreign land. Also it does helps when your government understand the value of web , and jobs posting nation wide.

Now , I did wanted to persuade the students to avoid the Universities run by a gentleman named Donald Trump , as his name suggest that man is a troll. And her majesty is not very found of this man with a funny taupe. Even if he has few billion dollars in his bank, he certainly does not posses the class that is exhibited by her majesty and her family , true Royal you see. I heard many students flunked in real life after attending the prestigious Donald Trump Universities , I would certainly wipe that one off the list if I were you.

I'm not talking about now, but when IIT was established. Many of the graduates ended up in the US, working in Silicon Valley. My uncle graduated from IIT, but ended up in US as a software engineer. The reverse brain drain is only a current phenomenon.

Ohh HEC is giving away the chance to PhDs to sneak out from Pakistan and never come back as they already wanted.
HEC must announce such things for undergraduates too . Hamara b to haq hai..:D

the plan to have HEC train pakistani PhDs in critical fields was being planned for in the 1990s. the successful training and setting up of our scientists for johari tawanai gave a blueprint. it seems to have been in full swing in the middle of Musharrafs regime but he, asif and nawaz systametically and deliberately dismantled it...if you recall a few years ago the newspapers had stories about PhD students left in the lurch when fundung as stopped by the crminals running teh governemt i.e. nawaz and asaif and their crnoies...for gods sake dr asim was head of HEC! a bigger scumbag you cant find.....

regarding them coming back many people do.....as did for the johari tawanai program.....the plan was to be become self suffiecent in PhDs ion critical fields within 10 years or so and if it had been implemented as planned this would jave been so. despite what pepole say many pakistanis as loyal honest and hard working ----we jsut need to guillotine the crooks running the govrenments ie. the politicians corrupt bureaucrats and othe government "servants" (!) as well as the qabza groups and crooked "business"men...

even is 80% percent dont come back, the at least some will and they can lay the foundation of teh pakistani science and trainm others indigenously.
bear in mind china's missile and nuclear program was started and run by a chinese scientist hwo was at CALtech and was kicked out from the US.

.
The problem is not coming back , most educated people who when they go to any government or technical site in Pakistan we see 0 jobs !!!

If it was not for Musharraf , there would not even be basic websites for business culture in Pakistan

Most of our government sites are all like 4-5 years old out dated and very hard to find jobs on these sites , every time anyone goes to one it says

No Vacancy

Do you see who lacks sense here?

I would expect a TTA to mention the ranking table before posting the individual rankings. Don't compare two universities from different rankings by different organizations.

One of your links does not work.

Besides you didn't list the ranking criteria.

Teaching is one of the criteria. R&D is another.

But there are a lot of other useless criteria that go into making the overall ranking.

You didn't "demolish" @django's claim.

Most of the universities he mentioned provide the same quality of education as the IITs.

Are you suggesting a student who went to IIT would somehow be a much inferior engineer if he went to NUST?

I'm not talking about the reputation - only the quality of engineers they churn out. Obviously, a more reputable university grad would land a better first job.

So reading your post - I'm not convinced IITs provides a markedly better quality of education than the ones django mentioned.

Prove me wrong.
