Featured Hasina calls for strengthening ties with Pakistan

. .
Pakistan should return the gesture and start working on toppling her for someone with a lot more backbone.

She has wasted a lot of Bengali potential and has been a roadblock in Pakistani-Bengali reconciliation. Once the new regime settles in......Pakistan and Bangladesh can open a 3rd front....from Bengali side, in terms of helping, influencing and arming rebels in North Eastern Indian territory...

Major havoc can be made in the red and neighboring Indian states of Bangladesh:

And looks like the relationship has been thawing for quite some time:

Bengali/bds main concern is economic prosperity. Once bd becomes prosperous n/e India will be eating out of bds hand. Also by that time turkeys kfs fighter will be ready and inshallal its is good and bd buys them.

Greater economy more powerful bd can become.

Elements like you in pak gov - is the reason why relations have gone down hill. We don't have Americas or China protection nor do we seek to be tied to them.

Congratulations to Bangladesh !
Of all the three nations that constituted "old India" it has gone furthest on the path to economic stability and social progress.
Best of all it has developed a national identity based on cultural and linguistic pride. A remarkable secular constitution implemented by a strong judicial system has ensured that Bangladesh has remained immune from the horrors of religious fundamentalism and extremism.
It's national security policy is even more remarkable where it is using its geography consisting of a river delta system as a natural defense while at the same time is building a robust and extremely effective defense apparatus somewhat like Singapore to deliver an unacceptable cost of invasion to a potential enemy. Like Singapore Bangladesh is geographically very small as compared to its neighbors but enjoys a strategic advantage simply because of its location keeping its potential enemies "off balance". Singapore is well prepared for a nuclear strike using its excellent Metro system as a nuclear shelter. Bangladesh probably has some similar plans but these are well kept secrets. One indication is that Bangladesh is undertaking a huge reform of its railroads and there are rumors of plans for deep underground metro systems. Bangladesh seems to follow the Israeli pattern where the disadvantages of a small geographical area are offset with careful planning.
Unlike Israel and Singapore Bangladesh has a substantial coastline and inland waterways. Inland waterways cannot be easily disrupted by bombing like a mountain road, highway or railroad system. These can be made somewhat inoperable by dropping mines, or bombing the docks for river barges. Bangladesh has invested heavily in mine sweeping, and air defense.

Thank you. What you said is correct!

Bangladesh has a natural defence mechanism and it will be an extremely difficult task to attack and capture it due to its terrain. One also needs to comprehend that we are a nation of 160 million, probably 7th largest by population in the world by now. It is not easy to subdue such a populace with an incoming military attack. Its simply not going to happen. Our conventional military touches 300k+ in number, with 6 million in trained Ansars/VDP that fall under military command in times of war. This is not counting BDR or even forces such as RAB and SWATs who mostly are all recruited from the military. These 3 forces will easily cross 100k in numbers currently. This also does not take into account our special forces such as SWADS, PGR, Black Eagles etc, the numbers of which are secretly guarded.

Technically speaking, our military has very strong emphasis on guerilla and riverine warfare. That will be our go to strategy after few initial days of conventional warfare. And I will bet any invading force will find it nearly impossible to march towards Dhaka, given tank warfare isn't going to work outside north-east Bangladesh. They have to fight on foot with amphibious capabilities and this is where we will have immense advantage. After all, how many bombs can you drop from the sky unless you are US? Even that does not win you war nowadays!

The tone of this article is hostile to Sheikh Hasina and bad taste. This is supposed to be the most reputed newspaper in Pakistan.
I'm assuming you're referring to the reference to Pak-Bangla ties going downhill after Hasina's election and her focus on re-opening the wounds of 1971?

I too am quite surprised at the tone, because Dawn tends to be very anti-Establishment and many of its editorial and op-ed staff have typically praised Bangladesh and criticized Pakistan.

But is there anything in the article you do not consider factually correct?

On the contrary, these despots make good business deals for competing markets.

Fundamentally, Pakistan does not believe in regime changes. This stance is declared stance of the State and is a well thought out best practice.

The power vacuum in such counties, no matter how attractive it looks, is for us to exploit such openly and brazenly.

@idune : By strengthening ties with Pakistan, BAL is drawing attention away from the fact that the Padma bridge approach road needs re-design and drainage problems persist in Dhaka.

Next they will insist Pakistan join some form of union with "Bangladesh" and therefore advance the Akhanda Bharat agenda on behalf of BJP.

Additionally you have a very strategic advantage on the "chickens neck" and some "dog leg territories".
What is most important is the unity and resilience of your people.
If you look at Finland it resembles Bangladesh with numerous lakes and rivers but with a tremendous sense of unity and purpose that helped them successfully thwart several invasions from the Soviet Union. Like Finland Bangladesh steers clear of foreign conflicts and its foreign policy is geared towards strict neutrality unless invaded.
It is not easy to defeat a united nation. All the US bombing didn't help in Vietnam. It's riverine deltas, marshes, rice fields and jungles were just too difficult to control, a huge fleet of helicopters, Swift boats, hovercraft, amphibious vehicles notwithstanding.
Cuba is another example that successfully thwarted a naval invasion ( Bay of Pigs ).
What ruins a nation is the loss of identity, self-purpose, fifth columns and traitors willing to collaborate with the enemy.
Mercifully Bangladesh has solved all these challenges and like Finland, Vietnam, Cuba, Switzerland, it stands fiercely independent and proud. Stability brings investment and Bangladesh's strict implementation of its laws, its anti-corruption drive, and iron fisted zero tolerance for religious fundamentalism has not gone unnoticed. Which us why investment has poured in and Bangladesh is well on its way to becoming an Asian tiger. Its GDP and Human Development Index outstrips its neighbors.
With no offense intended and with a profuse apology in advance I would like to put forward an entirely personal opinion on Bangladesh's identity. I will stand corrected if my opinion is false.
Bangladesh must look to the future so far as its linguistic and cultural identity is concerned. Basically it must disconnect from the Bengali speaking area in the neighboring country. Bangladesh does not need a cultural reference to West Bengal simply because there is a linguistic affinity. There is a religious divide. Linguistic and cultural affinities do not override deep divides especially if one side is completely focused on hegemony and colonization. The stark example is Ireland and UK where the UK has used a 5th column of separatists to permanently occupy a portion of Ireland, The Irish fought a bitter struggle for independence and the U.K. only gave up trying to subdue Ireland after being weakened by World War 1 and economic depression in the 1930s. There are other less recent examples where linguistic affinity did not help building bonds between people most notably South Africa when the British massacred Boer civilians and consigned hundreds of thousands into concentration camps ( the first in history).
The West Bengali elite ( bhadralok ), look upon their Bangladeshi co-linguistic neighbors with undisguised disgust and use epithets that we shall not repeat here.
While Bangladesh acknowledges the common cultural heritage from.the Dwijendrageeti Dhonno Dhanne Pushpe Bhora and has adopted Amar Shonar Bangla as its national anthem the West Bengalis do not show the same acknowledgment to Al Mahmud or Kazi Nazrul Islam..
Like their counterparts in the rest of their country the West Bengali bhadralok hate Muslims and which is why there is a Bangladesh today.
But much as I hold my nose saying this we must give the devil its due. To be fair to the West Bengali bhadralok they have been stellar contributors to Bengali poetry, literature, music, theatre, and above all an excellent movie and television industry. Their contributions have long transcended the linguistic barriers and their work has been translated into several languages and their movies and TV serials sub-titled and re-distributed. Satyajit Ray, Hrishikesh Mukherji, Mrinal Sen, Ritwik Ghatak are household names in Bengali cinema. The plays of Badal Sircar, the chorus group of Runa Guha Thakurta , the novels written by Jhumpa Lahiri, have a world wide acclaim when West Bengal is merely one province in India. Nor is the contribution of the West Bengali bhadralok comfined to the arts but have made generous contributions to science with the likes of S.C. Bose and others.

Bangladesh while acknowledging its common linguistic cultural heritage should look to the future and seize the cultural and intellectual dominance of the West Bengali minority bhadralok and produce their own Jhumpa Lahiris and S.C. Boses. This will complete Bangladesh's emergence not just as an economic power but also a cultural one similar to the way Japan is both.

They will be bombed to fcuk because they have a shit Airforce and no offensive missile capability

A military strategy of we are too many to kill is not a good one

Disagree...
Bangladesh is normalizing ties with Pakistan because eventually as part of a historical process nations with no strategic or territorial issues do exactly that. The process is even easier if there are no common borders. But even with borders once some time has past and issues have been resolved a normalization of relations is natural.
Poland and Germany are good examples today.
There will never be a re-union between Pakistan India and Bangladesh, not even a federation or even an EU type association .
The closest the Partition of the Subcontinent came to being reversed was in 1972 and again in 1975 when under a secular government in India there was a proposal to incorporate Bangladesh as a province of India since it was no longer part of the original partition. Ironically the strongest opposition to this move came from the bhadralok of West Bengal who feared being reduced to a minority status. Even the proposal to keep the old East Bengal- West Bengal status with a common capital ( like Punjab and Haryana ) fell flat . Even Indira Gandhi who towered over the political scene in India and had claimed that the "two nation theory " had been dumped into the Bay of Bengal could not overcome the united opposition from West Bengali politicians of all shades. These included Marxists and Subhas Bose Nationalists. Stalwarts such as Jyoti Basu, Siddharth Shankar Roy, Pranab Mukherji opposed the move. Even " Muslim " Bengalis like Gani Khan Chowdhury opposed integration perhaps thinking they would be eclipsed by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib.
Today the Hindutva cancer is poised to infect West Bengal with the RSS and VHP in a strong position to take control of the state.
There is no way there can be a reunion. India is not even remotely "secular" as Bangladesh.

.
These are just talks.... nothing will be in reality..... geography won't allow that..... India and Bangladesh are natural neighbors and Bangladesh won't have any political or strategic advantages by strengthening ties with Pakistan over India..... in reality Bangladesh will always be more closer to India than Pakistan....... Bangladesh is our Israel.....

Vishwambarji,
The Pakistani Bangladesh normalization of relations has nothing to do with any strategic or military issues just as Germany and Poland today have cordial relations with no strategic advantage. Perhaps in a hypothetical and far fetched Russian invasion of Poland. Highly unlikely as Russia is mainly interested in Ukraine. Unless Poland does something stupid it
is pretty secure.

Hostilities are only permanent when stoked by a fascist ideology based on religious, or racist hatred.
Some nations continue to do this preferring to live in a state of permanent war.
There is no incentive for either Bangladesh or Pakistan to maintain a low or degraded level of diplomatic ties, simply because one neighboring nation doesn't like it.

The outreach to Pakistan has come from Bangladesh which is a great gesture.
Diplomatic ties are usually enhanced for mutual benefit. At this point it is not entirely clear what benefit Bangladesh gains from improving its ties with Pakistan other than a cheaper shipping route for Bangladesh exports to China through Pakistan via CPEC. It would also like to possibly keep the air corridor over Pakistan secure and open to Bangladeshi airlines for their onward journey to the Middle East and Europe. The disruptions in February 2019 hurt Bangladeshi airlines substantially.
Other than these far fetched advantages there is no particular advantage for Pakistan and Bangladesh to improve ties beyond a certain point.
Pakistan gains very little other than a modest diplomatic advantage.
