HAL shows off 25-kN engine but doesn’t disclose its application

You need to develop the underlying ecosystem of SME's that can design and make the thousands of components that go into making an engine. Rolls-Royce aeroengines has a community of over 700 suppliers, each having developed its own expertise, with Rolls-Royce at the apex integrating designing and manufacturing critical components. Where are the 700 Indian manufacturer/supplier each with its own expertise supplying HAL.
HAL can't do that, it can only make pretend engines and underperforming demonstrators which are just PR fodder.



I mean what gives the right for morons and cretins who possess a couple of brain cells to make outrageous statements like this. This is jet engine mockup. Drones use rotary and turofan engines with a very few notable exceptions.

talking about Immediate applications it can be used to build our stage 2 trainer, UAV's , can be converted into Marine turbine, Pilotless target drone commercially small business jets , The AI-25TL engine is intended for L-39, the AI-25TLK engine is intended for K-8J aircraft and other trainers. It is successfully operated worldwide has only 16.87 kN . with modifications ours can be used to power light attack aircraft's .Most likely HAL has been contemplating on a strategic business unit to be included for UAVs for tapping India’s $2 billion domestic market.

In 2006 Nick Cook published an article in Janes, etc. describing a Lockheed project called Penetrating High Altitude Endurance (PHAE). This was described as a HALE UAV

UAV, sometimes known as the Penetrating High Altitude Endurance (PHAE), is believed to be capable of operating at the 70,000-80,000 ft altitudes used by the U-2. One report refers to the aircraft using engines from an inventory that has been in storage since the 1970s. This almost certainly refers to the General Electric J97-GE-3 engine for the Teledyne Ryan AQM-91 Compass Arrow UAV (a project terminated in 1971). In 1998, a NASA paper reported that 24 J97 engines were in storage at the agency's Ames research centre. The Compass Arrow exceeded 80,000 ft during tests, the highest unclassified altitude ever recorded for a subsonic jet-powered aircraft. The J97 was rated at around 25 kN and the new UAV is probably a twin-engine design. "

Another (small) chance that US is willing to share UCAV technology with India This might be hush hush . But check this out. ..

Powerd by two 25KN engine .This flying-wing-concept vehicle has a 50m wingspan and a gross take-off weight of between 11,700kg and 13,800kg. It would be able to loiter at 80,000ft (24,400m), with up to 42h on station, fielding an unrefuelled range of 34,600km (18,700nm) and a total mission duration of 60h. The W570 would carry payloads of 4,540kg and heavier."

Without quoting the whole abstract, Loral was pitching W570 around for the role we now know as Sensorcraft - and they were pitching it with the same engines Cook's sources mentioned.

I can't for the life of me recall who owns that Loral unit now, but maybe PHAE, if it exists, is actually W570. Maybe Loral found someone receptive to their pitches in the late 90s.
(It may be worthy of note that while Polecat and W570 are very similar, they appear to have very different family trees)

Under achievement is usually the first step to achievement and then to over achievement. The Only tragedy would be never to try than to try and fail and then succeed. In my book it encourages a never say die attitude and a path towards excellence.

But don't let reality prevent you from wallowing in despondency and defeatist attitude. Trade mark of a true Loser and coward.

That is ONE way of doing it. There is something called upward and downward integration. Though I am in agreement in outsourcing manufacturing components due to the efficiency and quality it inspires. HAL for the longest time was sheltered in a cocoon, one similar to those in the USSR. It's only now coming out of that cocoon and the future seems brighter already.

Hindustan Aeronautics (HAL) showcased model of new 25kN jet engine at its pavilion at the latest edition of Aero India and its very first visitor was none other then Prime minister of India who was given detail explanation on development of the new engine .

458-crore 25-kN jet engine project has been in development for last 5 years and preliminary design of the engine has been completed, HAL will soon start working on the development of Components for the new engine and assembly of the engine will start in next two years admitted HAL officials in Aero India 2015 stall .

When asked about its application and which platform it will power? , Answer was simple ” for future platforms “. HAL refused to provide further information on the application of new jet engine, but disclosed development of new 8kN jet engine which will be used for Medium class UAV’s.

Compared to bigger 110kN engine which India wants to develop to power 5th generation fighter jet AMCA, 25-kN jet engines seems like low key development but BAE Hawk AJT’s used by IAF are powered by Rolls-Royce Adour Mk. 951 turbofans engines which generate 29 kN of thrust, so a 25kN engine can be used to power small aircrafts.

Engine been used for India’s Autonomous unmanned combat air vehicle (UCAV) can also be ruled out since GTRE will be using Dry version of Kaveri engine which will be producing 40kN of thrust much higher then what HAL will be developing .

HAL’s plans to develop Advance Jet Trainer (AJT) to supplement BAe Hawk AJTS already used in Indian Air force has been long abandon after IAF showed no interest in the project. HAL’s troubled HJT-36 Sitara intermediate jet trainer aircraft project uses NPO Saturn AL-55I engine which generates 16.9 kN of thrust, engine has been developed with Russians which includes firm orders for 250 engines to be manufactured at HAL facilities and TOT license for 1000 engines . so new engine powering HJT-36 at later stage too can be ruled out .

Speculations are indicating that HAL wants to develop new unarmed Stealth unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) surveillance aircraft which will fall in the category of High altitude, long endurance UAV (or HALE UAV) and can be used for military operations and will have long endurance. While HAL has still not disclosed any information about the application of a new engine nor confirmed development of any future platforms which will use this engine, so until then it might remain a speculation for some time about its usage.

25 Kn class engine for AJT more than sufficient.
