Give orange metro subsidy or build schools and hospitals.

Stupid shortsightedness of the government.

Infrastructure spending is the basis of economic activity and development. Public enterprise and infrastructure projects are NOT intended to make profits.

Every government on earth runs budget deficits, with the exception of petro-states. The key question is how much benefit do we get from building orange line infrastructure for the Lahore economy vs cost. And I’d say my lay analysis says it’s worth a lot more to Lahore than we paid for it, and its value to the local economy will far outweigh the cost in the future. Extra tax revenue from better economic activity will make the project pay for itself, even if indirectly.

Was there any doubt?

The government now has no option. They can't just scrap it, it would be even more stupid, the loans and the interest on them won't go away. Instead of playing more politics on the matter, like the typical Pakistani government that PTI is, they need to start service on it asap.

Agree on the suggestion. But I would add that such projects are completely worth it and necessary. To be talking about trade offs vs funding hospitals after it has been built is silly.

Here the London Underground (subway) is the lifeline of the economy. It does NOT return a profit, it and other rail infrastructure costs the government billions every year. But if the LU were to stop running even for a few days, the loss to the economy can be comparatively huge.

Charge all PMLN followers Rs 500/- per ticket. They will pay as they claim it to be their great leaders project.
The rest can be charged at subsidized rates.

This project is worth it. And Lahore’s public transport infrastructure investment should be replicated in Karachi and other major cities. And not vilified IMO.

Exactly, no matter the corruption happened during these projects in Lahore, one thing is certain, in terms of infrastructure development, Lahore is on the right track which is really good news. Other cities and the Provincial ministers should get inspired from this work to replicate it in their own cities as well. Karachi is in dire need of such mass transit projects. Islamabad doesn’t need tho, already so tiny

Can someone ask PTI how many schools and hospitals were built by them in their tenure?
They forgot to mention the cost of their pet project Peshawar BRT and why its still.not operational. Orange line was suppose to start last year but it was delayed due to litigation by PTI itself. All infrastructure projects facing slowdown and hurdles in funding under PTI govt. All projects are made on loans.

Pti govt. has become a joke.

If you need facilities then pay taxes as well. Most of the punjab dont even pay income taxes but free ki ride chaye

Transportation is necessary but cheap and economical ones are required not the show off ones like orange line..
What we do not realize is that other than the principle amount and interest, the long term effects of the orange infrastructure would be more serious..
It will
1. Increase smog and air pollution
2.. Noise pollution will be increased
3.. Maintenance cost wud be high
4... Unless cheaper canal, garbage or salt range coal or wind power projects are used it will worsen the energy requirements and energy mix. It will also put strain on the already overwhelmed electricity infrastructure and increase the receivables as well.
5...subsidy to run the train will go with time
6... Just like metro bus the metro train will become a new place for dharna and strike rallies and idiots will indiscriminately damage the property which will be more expensive to repair and maintain
7.. Lastly the whole of lahore's skyline is tarnished for ever
No offense meant but your first 2 points are extremely pathetic.

Justify the noise and air pollution by a modern metro train working on electro magnetic rails ? Bhai this is not the usual BS chuk chuk train like those we have from a century, this is a modern train, soundless, you never know it approaches you unless you see it with your eyes.

No point crying over spilt milk. Time to make the most of it.

I'd suggest initially offering a subsidy, then taking it away slowly after a few years, once people have gotten used to using it. If the bus goes by my office and i use it for 2 years, then it becomes 50rs more expensive, will i stop using it, or will i just cough up the extra? What if next year it's 50Rs more?

Yeah some will stop using it, but most will complain, whine and carry on, because taxis are more expensive, cars are more expensive, alternate buses don't go as fast...

I'd also keep it free for school kids and discounted for under 25's. It will build up commuting habits amongst the youth, they'll become regular users and in the future will continue to use a mode of transport their acustomed too.

Also guys, is an all day ticket at 300rs expensive?

So what's the solution?
It's waste of money and a burden on economy. there is no solution government will pay more than 20 billion loan + 6.5 billion interest + 11.5 billion subsidy every year.
20+6.5+11.5= 38 billion. Which is equal to 10 percent education budget of Punjab province.

All public transport schemes with subsidy are good for the people of Pakistan, Orya maqbool jan has explained it very nicely in his yesterday's program "harf e raz" that urban transport schemes all over the world including london (The POS) all have some level of state subsidy given to them, watch this for yourself, it is all about the difference between having a rabid profit hungry mindset or having a social solidarity mindset.
