KEY POINTS
  • Australia had signed a contract with French shipbuilder Naval Group in 2016 to build a new fleet, at a cost of $40 billion, according to Reuters.
  • Both sides had confirmed the deal a couple of weeks ago.
  • However, Canberra has now decided to scrap that agreement and join forces with the U.S. and Britain.

LONDON — France is not holding back showing its disappointment with Australia after it abruptly ended a submarine contract in order to sign a new deal with the U.S. and U.K.

“It was a stab in the back. We had established a relationship of trust with Australia. This trust has been betrayed,” Jean-Yves Le Drian, France’s minister of foreign affairs, told radio station Franceinfo Thursday morning.

Australia had signed a contract with French shipbuilder Naval Group in 2016 to build a new fleet, at a cost of $40 billion, according to Reuters. Both sides had confirmed the deal a couple of weeks ago. However, Canberra has now decided to scrap that agreement and join forces with the U.S. and Britain.

Late on Wednesday, the three nations announced a new security partnership where Australia will receive new nuclear-powered submarines. The deal with France would have provided conventional submarines.

“We intend to build these submarines in Adelaide in close cooperation with the U.K. and the U.S. But let me be clear, Australia is not seeking to acquire nuclear weapons,” Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison said on Twitter.

He added that France is a “good partner” and that the new deal was motivated by “a changed strategic environment,” according to France 24.
The French Embassy in Washington also canceled a gala at their sprawling compound over frustration with the new trilateral partnership, a French official confirmed to CNBC.

The event, which was slated to commemorate the “240th Anniversary of the Battle of the Capes,” will no longer take place Friday at the embassy.
“Other parts of the celebration are still ongoing,” the official said, including a wreath-laying ceremony in Annapolis. A French destroyer will pull into Baltimore harbor on Monday as will a French submarine at Norfolk harbor.
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken told reporters on Thursday that he and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin had spoken to their French counterparts about the new security pact ahead of its unveiling.
“I’ll leave it to our Australian partners to describe why they sought this new technology. But as the president said and I want to emphasize again, we cooperate incredibly closely with France on many shared priorities in the Indo-Pacific but also around the world,” Blinken said.

“We’re going to continue to do so, we place fundamental value on that relationship, on that partnership and we will carry forward in the days ahead,” the nation’s top diplomat added.
Bitter relations
U.S. President Joe Biden made sure to reference France when presenting the new deal on Wednesday, saying the European nation will remain a key partner in the Indo-Pacific region.
In the U.K., Prime Minister Boris Johnson also said Thursday that the relationship with France is “rock solid.”
However, these words are unlikely to appease the ill feelings in France.
In the same radio interview, France’s foreign affairs chief also said that this “unilateral and unpredictable decision” reminded him of what former President Donald Trump used to do.

France’s ministers of foreign affairs and the armed forces also said in a joint statement on Thursday: “The American choice which leads to the removal of an ally and a European partner like France from structuring a partnership with Australia, at a time when we are facing unprecedented challenges in the Indo-Pacific region … marks an absence of coherence that France can only observe and regret.”

The statement added that the latest developments intensify the need for European strategic autonomy — the idea that the European Union should become more independent with its defense and security policies.

The European Commission, the EU’s executive arm, presented its strategy for the Indo-Pacific region on Thursday afternoon in Brussels. EU Foreign Affairs Chief Josep Borrell said, “We must survive on our own, as others do.”

Spokespeople for the White House and the Australian Embassy in London weren’t immediately available for comment when contacted by CNBC.

Biden has requested to speak with Macron today. This schism will eventually heal. But US will have to accommodate French interests with respect to defense equipment sale.

It is said that Biden is not happy with EU's co-operation in his attempts to build an alliance with China. EU's trade deal with China has hit a road block for now, but it may resume in a couple of years. Brussels seems to not be very keen on orienting NATO towards China anytime soon.

. . . . . . . .
The Russians do have a point - though I think it was the USA who stopped that sale ?
The Russians took Crimea that year, that's why the deal was cancelled. The Western Europeans and the Americans got angry.
The Russians "forgot" to mention that in the post. A lot of EU and NATO countries saw it as an invasion of Crimea. Remember, the Germans,Baltic countries and the Americans are strictly against Russia interfering in Ukraine and even the Caucasus. Or anywhere generally.

Mister, have you seen the parts of the world that Britain still holds? Seriously? France? Large chunk of Brazil? It's just a small jungle-filled country ffs and the British and Dutch have their own colonies RIGHT next to it! Lol!
Incursions in the Maghreb region? Man,USA and Russia are playing entire countries against one another, not just groups! Check out the Middle-East,Asia and Latin America.

Ahahahahaha 😂 😂 😂 Well yeah. It's about democracy :P

My friend, I truly enjoy your opinion, and I do like the poster above, it is indeed something Erdogan might see in his dreams and might be able to pull off a bit in Africa, but regardless.

You are from Greece, putting all differences aside, speaking just as Humans, let's be fair to ourselves, wouldn't you want to ensure the safety and unity of all of the Greeks and ensuring that your Greek Culture remains intact, and believe me I kid you not I truly respect that.

I know that because of interests being aligned with Israel and France and EU in order to counter and contain Turkey it is justifiable, but what is not justifiable is that you are seeing all of these clips and actual acts of Terror against the Muslims in Palestine, imagine these were your Greek brothers being killed.

The same applies in Kashmir Valley. Yes, it is strategic, but would you as a Human be more concerned about it's strategic value or the people who suffer and you have to live with that on your conscience. Why would we Pakistani's like to go ahead and spend Billions and Billions of our hard earned foreign currency reserved to buy military hardware, if were that corrupt and did not have conscience alive, we would have spent those billions in buying cars and supporting the luxury lifestyle of our Generals like Dostum in Afghanistan, but we did not we were modest in that.

So, be fair, huh Even Erdogan's anger and intervention is justified, its just the matter of prospective.

Didn't you Greeks want independence from the Ottomans, I respect that, so should all respect the independence of Palestine and Kashmir from the Israel's and Indian's whether you like it or not you need to go ahead and accept the fact that your reason for Independence inclines more with the Kashmiri's against a foreign force in your own reason for independence.

Waiting for a Response.

Amidst all this grandstanding of powerful countries, will someone help out a poor individual ?

I bought a nuclear submarine from France at throwaway prices, as they had surplus stock after their Australian deal was scuttled by AUKUS.

It so happened that they were using Chinese Chips which could be remotely disabled by China unless I joined the Belt and Road Project. I grudgingly agreed only to realise that only Russian grade uranium could be used in the reactor.

Since the Russians were not happy with the EU sanctions, they sold me uranium on the condition that I replace French instruments with Russian. I agreed and then I realised I needed a Russian translator to make sense of the readings.

The Russian I hired turned out to be a KGB spy so the US sanctioned me, unless I equipped the sub with their missile system. I had no use for this as I had bought the sub for leisure. I pleaded with them that a US missile system was incompatible with Russian controls and hence useless, to which they replied that since I wanted the sub for leisure, it shouldn't make a difference. Made sense, so I installed the missile system.

One day by mistake I triggered the missile, fully confident that it wouldn't fire, but it did. Apparently the Chinese chips were capable of interfacing the American and Russian systems. The missile hit the Australian coast and they have confiscated my sub and are using it themselves, after refusing to buy it from the French in the first place. All my warranties and insurance are void because I made unauthorized modifications to the sub. Qatar is willing to mediate on the condition that.......

Moral of the story - Do not buy a submarine for personal use

Well of course, most Greeks are pro-Palestinian. We despise what they've been doing to them all these decades and we believe that both people have the right to their own country.

Definetely. Kashmir should be part of Pakistan and I believe that to be peace in the Middle-East finally, the Israelis should go back to the pre-1967 borders and both nations to recognize each other and the Palestinians to have their own, standing army, disarm the militias and various groups and political parties and all the Israeli settlements inside Palestinian territory to be removed and the settlers to go back to Israel.

What I'm saying is that I don't believe that Erdogan really cares enough to do something to help Palestine or Kashmir.
He goes on and on talking about Kudus and liberating Palestine and threatening Israel, but he won't actually do something against them.
