It was their official philosophy of atheism and enmity to the Christian faith. Only when they needed ALL the Russian people to fight the Nazi invasion and only after the KGB and GRU had infiltrated and coopted the Orthodox church's hierarchy, did they permit any degree of religious freedom. Are you kidding? Did you even bother to read my link? Stalin's hands were soaked in the blood of Christian Orthodox people. The Trotskyites had long since been purged. He ONLY let up on the persecution when he was desperate and the German Army was at the gates of Moscow. He needed ALL the Russian people, and so temporarily eased up on the repression until the Nazis were defeated, but once they were, new waves of oppression began. He was also able to do so by blackmailing, threatening, and finally corrupting the hierarchy of the Russian Orthodox Church, which is well documented and which they have admitted to since the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991.

Warehouses FULL of GRU, KGB, and Party and government records that detail the long murderous rule of the communist in Russia.
