Inferior parts being used in Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant: Top scientist

It has been alleged that sub-standard materials have come to the Kudankulam plant and they are causing problems.

CHENNAI: The Centre, speeding up the process to commission the first unit of the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant, received a jolt from one of the country's noted nuclear scientist and former chairman of Atomic Energy Regulatory Board (AERB) A Gopalakrishnan, who raised doubts about the quality of equipment in the plant. "Sub-standard materials have come to the Kudankulam plant and they are causing problems," he alleged.

Gopalakrishnan was speaking at the national convention on "Approach to the power question in the country," organised by the People's Committee for Safe Energy, and Breakthrough Science Society. "Dangerous things have been done undercover," he said. "AERB officials are not responding to any queries. There are reports from Russia about the supply of substandard atomic energy equipment. This has to be investigated before they go ahead with the commissioning. Since faults may not be known for a few years, safety concerns of the people have to be cleared," he said, while seeking an independent Indian investigation team to study the plant. "Chinese have now started examining the components from Russia," he said.

The senior scientist, who endorsed indigenous development of atomic energy, complained the reactors under operation with foreign support were in a very bad state. The nuclear reactors in Tarapur built by America's General Electric in 1965, suffered serious technical problems even when they were constructed. The spare parts could not be sourced from GE even in 1995 as they were no longer making it. "Even the GE's assessment was that the plants were too old, dangerous and should be shut down, but the department of Atomic Energy continue running the plants till date," said Gopalakrishnan. He questioned India's commitment to French reactors for Jaitapur even while a single plant of that kind had not been built anywhere in the world.

Terming the Centre's nuclear policy as dictated by foreign countries, Gopalakrishnan said, "Nuclear policy followed in this country today is moving on a reckless path and it could one day land us in trouble."

Let me guess, Koovie is going to question the passport and nationality of the scientist instead of paying attention to the points mentioned?

He has an opinion, and he is accusing based on 'reports from Russia'.
Whatever points he mentioned, we have no way of knowing the authenticity for now.

Dont be stupid.

This is a serious allegation made a scientist who worked in this field, not an excerpt of a randomly made one sided blog post made by Americans.

No you shouldn;t be stupid. It took quite a few protests and 2 scientists to come out in public to get some media attention to these issues. But when poor ppl, activists, etc. get involved.....then it becomes a foreign conspiracy. You don;t have to be a scientist to read the facts and understand the problems we face. The regular common man on the street also know how corrupt our politicans are. They understand if anything happens they will suffer not the politicans.

The problem is when you have a govt trying to push this down our throats without sufficiently addressing the problems.

Quality is always subjective, i.e. there is nothing as absolute quality.

There are certain things in this world which can never be proved unless all the nuclear power plants in this world are closed and every parts inspected, the scope may be increased to include all airplanes, ships, busses, power plants, factories, and every thing that may cause mass loss of public lives. There are more than a couple of scientists questioning the quality of parts used in those things.

Only answer can be silence as done by the AERB officials.

That was a unnecessary low blow ................

And what problem should govt address? He is the former chairman. How much does he knows of current developments? Who informed him of the quality of the parts? I cant question his knowledge but his motives seem dubious. He is prejudiced, as the report itself said - 'The senior scientist, who endorsed indigenous development of atomic energy'.

He is simply saying that all the people, the thousands of scientist, engineers, official etc are keeping the lid something that may harm the country, including the people that are supposed to work there and live with their families in the premise.

How do you ascertain credibility of his accusations, when we know that any insider information is not leaked to people outside the system, even if they are former head of AERB. It just seems like he has a bone to pick with his juniors and forward his agenda of indigenous nuke plants. And he got the opportunity for both.

Koovie is one of our own , don't poke him unnecessarlly.
What he posted on RG thread was condemned by many of Indian posters and that was enough.

Care to explain..

People think I am a Congress follower because I did not like the blog post in that thread. This brainless type of party followers will applaud and hail anything their own party does, while anything that the other party does is bad, evil, BS etc and will try to block it. With this type of politics this nation will end no where.

The irony is that some of them went so far to call me a nazi, while they start to bash and attack anyone who does not conform to their political views

Don't know what Koovie would say but what i Would say is that you have an affinity for nutjob articles.

They may be conspiracy theories, slander post, or partisan arguments made for lobbying.

Russians are using bad quality equipment.By which standards?

This scientist was always biased against Foreign nuclear plants.Every organisation have some.

I'm not sure if it;s enough. the guy has a habit of doing such nonsense. Maybe he should endure such treatment for a long time.

People need to respect diverse opinions.

Sure, so why won;t you let Koovie know that.
