Finland doubling NATO’s border with Russia in blow to Putin [Finland joins NATO]

Russia`s big mistake was that she only attacked at Ukraine, not Finland..

The last time they attacked, they regretted it a lot

Russia is going to deploy nuclear weapons again near its borders touching Finland and Kaliningrad. Return of the cold war. That will have far reaching negative consequences for whole of Europe in the long term.
When you mess with an adversary who can reply in the same tone no one wins actually and both sides suffer.
US& NATO did a stupid mistake by messing in Ukraine .What they achieved is the return of the cold war. Same old nuclear holocaust fears, same old excess military spending etc.

BRUSSELS (AP) — The blue-and-white Finnish flag rises outside NATO headquarters Tuesday afternoon, making Finland a member and doubling Russia’s border with the world’s biggest security alliance.

The move is a strategic and political blow to President Vladimir Putin, who has long complained about NATO’s expansion toward Russia and partly used that as a justification for his country’s war with Ukraine.

“What we see is that President Putin went to war against Ukraine with a declared aim to get less NATO,” NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg said. “He’s getting the exact opposite.”

Like all NATO members, Finland will benefit from the collective security guarantee that an attack on one is considered an attack on all.

NATO has said that it has no immediate intention to step up its presence in Finland. Some members have deployed troops there for war games over the last year.

Russia immediately warned that it would bolster forces near Finland if NATO sends any additional troops or equipment to what will be its 31st member country

Finland has substantial, well-trained armed forces with elite troops capable of operating in the sub-zero temperatures of the high north. The Nordic country also has a large reserve army and is investing heavily in new equipment, including dozens of U.S.-made F-35 fighter jets.

The Finnish flag rising between the French and the Estonian in a ceremony scheduled for 1330 GMT will complete the fastest accession process in the organization’s recent history .

Alarmed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year, Finland applied to join NATO in May 2022. Neighboring Sweden also applied, but its accession process will take longer.

The ceremony falls on NATO’s very own birthday, the 74th anniversary of the signing of its founding Washington Treaty on April 4, 1949.

“It will be a good day for Finland’s security, for Nordic security, and for NATO as a whole,” Stoltenberg told reporters on Monday on the eve of a meeting of alliance’s foreign ministers in Brussels.

Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko warned that Moscow would bolster its own forces “in case of deployment of forces of other NATO members on the territory of Finland.”

“We will strengthen our military potential in the west and in the northwest,” Grushko said, according to the state RIA Novosti news agency, although Russia is already having trouble marshaling forces against far-smaller Ukraine.

Finland shares a 1,340-kilometer (832-mile) border with Russia and unlike most members of the alliance, Finland did not cut defense spending and investment after the Cold War.

“They have trained and built a large army over many years and maintain that high level of readiness. Finland is also a country with extremely high level of resilience, of preparedness throughout the whole society,” Stoltenberg said.

The country also helps to complete NATO’s geographical puzzle by filling in a major gap in the strategically important Baltic Sea region in Europe’s north.

On Tuesday, Stoltenberg said, Turkey, the last country to have ratified Finland’s membership, will hand the official document enshrining its approval to U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken.

NATO’s top civilian official said he will then invite Finland to hand over its own signed documents, to complete the procedure.

Finnish President Sauli Niinistö and Defense Minister Antti Kaikkonen will attend the flag-raising ceremony along with Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto.

“It is a historic moment for us. For Finland, the most important objective at the meeting will be to emphasize NATO’s support to Ukraine as Russia continues its illegal aggression,” Haavisto said in a statement. “We seek to promote stability and security throughout the Euro-Atlantic region.”

Badly played player Putin....

The fools are rest of NATO european members.

Finland maybe is even smart.

Finland is not adding security to any NATO member.
But NATO maybe is adding security to Finland.

So the dumbfuck is not Finland.
You do know Finland, in term of both troop number and warfare experience are more or less only just behind the US right? Name a NATO country that have 200,000 active duty member ready to go and have 900,000 reserve trained up? Plus that is a big buffer between Russia and NATO, if NATO is to be hit, it would have been Finland first.

Adding Finland into NATO work on NATO favor, not the other way around, that is the exact reason why Finland did not join NATO before this Russian stunt.

Lol, it is Russia that started the war

Should’ve attacked before this vote, but I guarantee if Finland gets attacked now, NATO won’t lift a finger.
Well, probably don't need to.

I mean, Russia did attack Ukraine, and that didn't go very well for them, hard to imagine what they can do with their thumb up their arse if they do stupid enough to attack Finland......

The way that some Russian cheerleaders are trying to spin this as a Russian win at all cost, shows how desperate they have become 😆
lol, I especially like the idea of attacking Finland pre or post NATO membership, I mean, they get F offed in a tiny country called Ukraine, how do you think they will fare with Finland a fully Westernised country with all the high tech weapon Ukraine wanted??

Finland got an infantry heavy military with advanced weaponry, but no real experience.

Neither Finnish soldiers or generals got real combat experience, they weren't alive during Finland's last war.

Finnish military is defense oriented, with only 200 tanks and 300 IFVs.

Its doctrine is based on a lot of infantry with a lot of anti tank weaponry.

Well, they have what most EU and NATO member had post WW2 the 2 wars in the middle east and quite a lot of deals with UN in Africa and Middle East.

Finnish staff officer is very highly trained and 200 tanks and 300IFV is a lot, considering they also have around 1000 APCs and almost their entire active military structure are mechanised. They can make more armor spearhead than what thew West gave Ukraine, and that's already a lot.

I disagree honestly, 200 tanks, 300IFVs and 1000 APCs is kinda underwhelming for the amount of soldiers they have. Israel got a similar amount of active and reserve soldiers and almost 10 times more tanks and APCs (We don't have IFVs unfortunately, yet), and that's not accounting equipment in storage.

I'm sure their training and gear are way better than the average mobilised Russian. Still, Finland's peacekeeping operations only amount to a few thousand soldiers operating, rarely ever getting into combat situations. That would be like saying Russia is combat experienced because of their operations in Syria. It's true about the guys that served in Syria, not the Russian army.

Russia definitely doesn't have the power to spare in order to fight Finland, but Finland is truly a nation whose doctrine is defensive in nature, their military structure shows it.

Poland is going for an offensive military, with crazy amount of K2 and M1A2 tanks, IFVs and artillery being bought. They'll have the strongest tank force in Europe by far by then.

What about when Russian ICBM's will destroy the city you are in? 😁
There is a balance of nuclear terror. So these threats by russian officials are really empty words. The nuclear ICBM is good for this, if I'm dying, let's all die together. The US does not want a dead Russia. Because if Russia dies, the fear factor with which it can consolidate Europe disappears. But a sick Russia is always desirable for them.

Because this balance is maintained, today's warfare conditions have gradually evolved towards proxy wars and more towards hybrid wars.

Russia could expand US' proxy wars through Finland. It can no longer do so. The only open window is the Ukraine, and even there it looks like it is stuck in the mud.

Yep but that works.
Finnish terrain is a pain in the arse for classical mechanized warfare (which russians aren't even good at ...) some manouvre are possible on some (choke) points.
Specialized light infantry + good artillery and NLOS ATGM ....
Tough nut to crack for Russians.
