FBI arrests two for being allegedly on ISI payroll

the only charges they can really face are financial and some other technical charges....it doesnt make sense to charge them with espionage since they werent engaged in any domestic spying or compromising any US national interests.

and this is all ALLEGED so far

I dont think espionage is being considered.. Its just that USA has outed this fake Kashmiri spokesperson and Pakistan's game behind it. Looks like the game of diplomatic chicken is going on between USA and Pakistan.. Lets see who blinks first.. Popcorn are in order..

if you look at the actual website of the organization, it's much like the MANY OTHER Kashmiri groups operating in the country (and in other countries like UK)

it isnt even a militant-leaning organization. They simply highlight the india's state sponsored terrorism and murder of the Kashmiri people. Hís organization simply mirrors the sentiments felt by majority of Kashmiris.

by the way, as he is a US citizen they cant really ''out'' him, can they? The organization itself is still running. In fact their offices are on Washington DCs K-street (a 12 minute walk from my office) so i think I may head there and see how they're doing. :)

as for popcorn....well yes, you indians are famous for talking and dreaming. So pop plenty of buttered popcorn.

.
To me it looks like Indian false alarm and constantly bollywood style brainwashing has take USA in total surprise..they have made an a55 out of themselves.

.
If these guys wanted to do "something good", then why not take a pain and get registered as required by law?

If they doing something illegally then hell, now deal with it. Now, they have to fight for their own independence than for Kashmir lol

.
As you always have? what a joke...ive hardly even wasted time interacting with some bharti internet amateur like yourself...

to get on point, yes i do agree that there are double standards....soooo, so be it....

unfortunately for india however, it doesnt ensure that the Kashmiri struggle will just suddenly come to an end. The freedom fighters are a lot closer to home :)

this may mean though that the US will remain blind to the atrocities being committed, but then again they never are vocal about it the way they are about smaller conflicts of less importance (e.g. Tibet)

the US are just standing by their interests......its nothing personal; they just want to do something symbollic during Sec. State visit to hindstan. They know that they cant charge him for espionage (a much more serious crime).

Hopefully it wont have an affect on the KAC though; though even if it did, many other such groups exist.

Will be interesting to follow Daniel Burton's reaction to this.

.
Not to worry, we have many "friends" in the State Department, Pentagon and other places, regarding Pakistan - the biggest asset is the Kashmiri diaspora who are present in the millions in the west.

Mr Fai appeared in federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, where a judge ordered him held in custody until a preliminary hearing on Thursday.

He faces up to five years in jail if convicted.

Federal election records showed Fai had given $23,500 to U.S. political candidates since 1997, including $250 to President Barack Obama's presidential campaign as well as $7,500 to Republican Representative Dan Burton of Indiana.

Burton, an outspoken critic of India's actions in Kashmir, said in a statement he was 'deeply shocked' by Fai's arrest and 'had no inkling of his involvement with any foreign intelligence operation.'

'If there is any doubt about the origin of these contributions, I will donate those funds to the Boy Scouts of America,' he said. Burton said he has known Fai for 20 years.

Much to my surprise this story made it on to D.C.'s WTOP radio yesterday. The reporters did say it was aimed at the ISI and called it spying. One of them had been to a KAF function and said it was "creepy".

Kashmir Separatist Leader Denounces US Arrest

SRINAGAR, India (AP) — A separatist leader in Indian-controlled Kashmir said Wednesday the Kashmiri-born man arrested in the U.S. on suspicion of being a Pakistani agent is a victim of a diplomatic conspiracy.

The charge against Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai of the Kashmiri American Council alleges he is an unregistered agent of a foreign government. The U.S. Justice Department says he donated millions to a Washington nonprofit in a secret lobbying effort led by Pakistani intelligence to influence U.S. policy on disputed Kashmir.

The arrest is likely to complicate the already strained ties between nuclear-armed neighbors India and Pakistan, which have fought two wars since their 1947 independence over rival claims to the Himalayan territory. The U.N.-drawn line of control dividing Kashmir is the world's most heavily armed border.

Kashmiri separatist leader Syed Ali Shah Geelani on Wednesday insisted Fai was innocent and called the allegation the "result of India's diplomatic efforts and conspiratorial plans."

Both Fai and Geelani have openly opposed India's heavy-handed rule and argued that Kashmiris should vote themselves to decide the territory's final status. India has refused any such referendum, accusing Pakistan of fomenting conflict by arming and training rebels. Pakistan denies this and says it provides only moral and diplomatic support.

Over decades, stone-throwing Kashmiri youths have held regular street protests, and violent uprisings and crackdowns have left 68,000 people dead, most of them civilians, since 1989.

"Mr. Fai has been active for last 32 years highlighting the plight of his people," Geelani said. "Because of his unflinching advocacy of the Kashmir cause at the international level, he had become an eyesore for India."

Another separatist group, the pro-independence Jammu-Kashmir Liberation Front, also condemned the U.S. charge as going against the democratic path of nonviolence Fai advocated. "His arrest is against ideals of democracy and peaceful reconciliation. This is also against the U.S. government's approach and thinking."

India's police chief in Kashmir said Fai's arrest followed years of suspicions.

"He has been figuring in lots of things in the past, like ... the diversion of ISI funds for anti-national activities in India and particularly in Jammu and Kashmir," Kuldeep Khoda said.

The U.S. Justice Department says in court documents that Fai — directed by a top member of Pakistan's spy agency Inter-Services Intelligence, or ISI — donated millions of dollars to U.S. political campaigns, wrote newspaper op-eds, organized congressional trips and met with White House and State Department officials. It alleges Pakistan financed similar operations in London and Brussels.

U.S. tax documents show Fai's Kashmiri American Council had a much smaller budget and told the U.S. government it received no foreign grants.

Though the charges are not related to espionage, the arrest adds strain to the difficult U.S.-Pakistan relationship, tested recently when the U.S. found and killed Osama bin Laden inside Pakistan without telling the government there.

Geelani urged Kashmiris to protest Friday and "foil the Indian designs to weaken the Kashmiri struggle."

He said that, unless Fai was freed, Kashmiris "will lose their faith in the international community."

Several of Fai's colleagues in the U.S. also said they were stunned by Fai's arrest, calling the soft-spoken 62-year-old a "gentleman" who dedicated his whole life to the Kashmiri cause. Associate Nadim Malik, head of advocacy group Kashmir Mission USA, on Tuesday insisted "Dr. Fai and the Kashmiri freedom movement have nothing to do with the ISI."

The arrest also sparked debate on social networking site Facebook, with some questioning the timing of Fai's arrest while U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton was visiting India this week.

One Kashmiri man Shuja Malik said the "U.S. has killed two birds with one stone" in hitting out at both Pakistan's shadowy intelligence service and Kashmiri separatists.

ISI has a complicated relationship with U.S. intelligence. The agency is a crucial ally against terrorists but also works against the U.S. at times, including running double agents against the CIA.

.
Its a just a gimmick.. I dont understand what could be gained by arresting him for financial impropriety.. Besides the timing cannot be a coincidence.. I think FBI was watching him for quite some time and came public at the opportune time..
lobbyists such as him are dime a dozen in Washington.. But it will surely discredit the kashmiri movement internationaly if not anything else..

.
Amateur or not...it becomes necessity when "Professionals" themselves act like amateurs.

Anyway I'll be damn happy if this move was meant to appease India as alleged. Shows the growing clout in Washington and its never a bad news.

well it's obviously one confused reporter, given that

a.) the allegations are ONLY allegations

b.) he is not being charged with espionage.....he was doing PR work only

if you look at a lot of other pro-Kashmiri groups (operating in US, Canada, EU etc.) they all seem to mirror the objectives and goals of an org. like KAC.

no references at all even remotely to militancy.....but again, it's more just to please some petty indians and also a chance to bring spotlight on the ISI. It's a failed strategy simply because it will only complicate relations with Pakistan (and especially ISI) but also it wont have any effect on the Kashmiri struggle itself.

because the Kashmiri struggle is a genuine one.

.
by the way, if Mr. Fai was allegedly lobbying on behalf of the ''terrorist'' ISI which (according to the indian canary birds with their long loose beaks) supports ''terrorism'' in Kashmir -- then Mr. Fai didnt do a very good job of it

considering that his viewpoints were more in line with the views of not just Gilani and gang but even the views of Barak Ombaba and Her Royal Thigh-ness (Clinton) who has often stated the same things about Kashmir and Kashmiri cause:

OIC Can Persuade India & Pakistan To Resolve the Kashmir Conflict Peacefully: Fai

Fai said that the Kashmiri delegation will remind Professor Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, the Secretary General of the OIC of his comments which he made on September 24, 2010 in New York, "A peaceful and negotiated settlement of the Jammu and Kashmir dispute would serve not only the people of India and Pakistan but the overall interest of the region. It is, therefore, with this in mind that the OIC continues to encourage the two parties to sustain and push forward the peace process in order to resolve all outstanding issues while associating the Kahsmiri people in a result-oriented dialogue."

OIC Can Persuade India & Pakistan To Resolve the Kashmir Conflict Peacefully: Fai

Mr. Fai was a thorn in the indians side; the Americans need india as a bulward against an increasingly assertive China......so does it not make sense for Americans to use Mr. Fai (a fellow American of Kashmiri background) as a scapegoat?

.
India has been telling USA for decades to pressurize Pakistan regarding terrorist in Kashmir and elsewhere but America didnt do sh*&.. this is purely a tit for tat response for Pakistan needling american officials in Pakistan. So, any hypothesis connecting this arrest as a favor to India is plain wrong.

Bottomline--- Do not mess with America!
