Two U.S. Navy warships sailed through international waters in the Taiwan Strait on Sunday, the first such operation since a visit to Taiwan by U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi enraged China which regards the island as its territory.

WASHINGTON, Aug 27 (Reuters) - Two U.S. Navy warships are sailing through international waters in the Taiwan Strait, three U.S. officials told Reuters, the first such operation since heightened tension with China over U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan.

In recent years U.S. warships, and on occasion those from allied nations such as Britain and Canada, have routinely sailed through the strait, drawing Beijing's anger.

China, which claims Taiwan as its own territory against the objections of the democratically elected government in Taipei, launched military drills near the island after Pelosi visited in early August, and those exercises have continued.

The trip infuriated Beijing, which saw it as a U.S. attempt to interfere in China's internal affairs.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, on Saturday said U.S. Navy cruisers Chancellorsville and Antietam were carrying out the operation which was still underway.

Such operations usually take between eight and 12 hours to complete and are closely monitored by the Chinese military.

The narrow Taiwan Strait has been a frequent source of military tension since the defeated Republic of China government fled to Taiwan in 1949 after losing a civil war with the communists, who established the People's Republic of China.

Pelosi was followed around a week later by a group of five other U.S. lawmakers, with China's military responding by carrying out more exercises near Taiwan.

Senator Marsha Blackburn, a U.S. lawmaker on the Senate Commerce and Armed Services committees, arrived in Taiwan on Thursday on the third visit by a U.S. dignitary this month, defying pressure from Beijing to halt the trips.

The Biden administration has sought to keep tension between Washington and Beijing, inflamed by the visits, from boiling over into conflict, reiterating that such congressional trips are routine.

The United States has no formal diplomatic relations with Taiwan but is bound by law to provide the island with the means to defend itself.

China has never ruled out using force to bring Taiwan under its control.

Taiwan's government says the People's Republic of China has never ruled the island and so has no right to claim it, and that only its 23 million people can decide their future.

The Eastern Theater Command of the People's Liberation Army remains on high alert and is ready to thwart any provocations, Senior Colonel Shi Yi, a spokesman for the theater command, said in a statement on Sunday.

The statement came after two United States warships sailed through the Taiwan Straits. The US cruisers Chancellorsville and Antietam sailed through the Taiwan Straits on Sunday, with the US publicly hyping the trip, Shi said.

He said the theater command has tracked and monitored the entire passage of the ships and has everything under control.

The transit was the first such operation of the US Navy since the PLA conducted military drills around the island of Taiwan in response to a visit to Taiwan by US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi earlier this month despite strong oppositions from the Chinese mainland.

Some of our fleets are out for 6 months at a stretch and China can't handle what..not even a month a few miles offshore?

So all that show of force around Taiwan was just temporary? Back to the old ways of China's Naval ships all sitting in port doing nothing?

You implied that the US navy went through the Chinese military exercise, but US waited for China to cease their sea exercise before picking a convenient timeline to pass through the strait .
Back to the old ways?Well,the recent military exercise established a new normal on the taiwan strait ,China can now cross the imaginary median line and conduct unprecedented lvl of military exercise,that includes blockade of the strait, or fly a missile over the island.

If there was military excercise ,US ships would have never approached the strait to begin with, especially not if China called a ban of entry during the exercise.

China concluded the exercise on August 10. On August 28, two tattered US warships crossed the Taiwan Strait. Why does China need to respond?

If the Americans really want to provoke China, they should cross the Strait before August 10.

I don't understand why people think anything needs to happen here. This is normal freedom of navigation. If anything, this is a pretty weak gesture (sending ships slated for retirement in a couple of years) and probably a signal from us military that they want to dial down the tension.
