Exclusive: TikTok's Chinese owner offers to forego stake to clinch U.S. deal - sources

Why complain about it? Because they always whined and moaned about it like wh*res about how "freedom of speech" is crucial and countries like Iran and China that censor their propaganda and espionage apps are violating the rights of their citizens to a free internet.

So, yes. Criticism targeted at the US for violating a principle that it aggressively promotes is 100% correct.

Twitter and Facebook are not a human right.

Neither is the internet, it owes its existence to a US military project back in the 60s. The American taxpayer subsidised its development, so this idea that access to information and dumb social media apps in "unfree" nations is like some sort of human rights travesty is ridiculous and a clear cut example of the neoliberal disease that has taken over the world.

. .
Small potatoes for a company like Microsoft with a market cap over $1.5 trillion and over $135 billion cash on hand.

This is about influence. China’s only globally influential app has now been significantly undercut by the US. Thereby Chinas influence will be diminished. That’s a win for the US.

What is this influence you're talking about? Charli Damelio and James Charles? Are they injecting subliminal CCP messages in their dancing and makeup videos? No, there's no geostrategic loss for China.

Go and play your stupid Lesbian fungal zombie video game you hyped for months

. .
I disagree with you on this, my friend.
China has never claimed to be the protector of "freedom of speech" worldwide. If anything, China has always said that it values state security over freedom of internet. Their policies regarding freedom of internet has always been clear. The US on the other hand has always claimed that it promotes a free internet and freedom of expression. It has even imposed human rights sanctions on countries like Iran for censorship of the internet.

To ban an application that poses no security threat to the US whatsoever is a clear violation of what the US preaches.
That might be true, but this matter have deeper underpinnings and history behind it. Many continue to look at this matter from "emotional standpoint," with lack of emphasis on the deals made in the past.

When foreign investment comes in your country, it comes with some strings attached to it (terms and conditions). Both parties have to show flexibility to finalize a deal which should be ideally mutually beneficial to both. If one country does not live up to its side of bargain in subsequent years, then there are consequences.

There is no such thing as absolute Freedom of Internet and absolute Freedom of Expression in practice. Anybody who bought into this, was not thinking clearly. Yes, Americans can be very accomodating (PDF and so many other social platforms are notable case studies), but there are limits.

USA-China dealings have become a casualty of trust-deficit lately. You may want to dig into causes beneath. These are numerous.

If it's only TikTok, then you have a point here.
But if we connect with Huawei case, they not just trying to ban it.
They bully other countries to ban it as well, they want to destroy a company with national power.
Hence the the difference.
Fair point.

Americans are hypocrites no doubt. But hypocrisy is a global issue, my friend.

I can provide a counter-argument in this case as well but I leave it here.

You need to understand that these issues have deeper underpinnings and history than how they appear to many on the surface.

Peace out.

The US and China are in a long term competition for global influence across all sectors and walks of life. Why do you think the US government is targeting TikTok? Because it’s China’s only globally influential app. And now it’s being undercut.

As for TLOU2, it’s a masterpiece whose themes flew right over your head. I had a blast playing it.

So your man child president is a little angry that some kids ruined his Covid-19 spreading event in Tulsa.

Hmm, whatever happened to fairness....

Don't preach ideals to which you guys cannot live up to. Simple.

The US has done more to erode its global influence than expand since Trump has came into office, even the Europeans are annoyed and inconvenienced by you. You don't really have any friends, well you still have Israel your greatest ally of course, I'm sure they won't sell anymore US military tech to the Chinese like they have been doing for the past 30 years.

TLOU2 was a generic "humans are the real monsters" revenge arc that added nothing to the story. It's themes were Druckmann's bizarre masculine steroid tranny fetish. Man self-inserted as two characters that have sex with Abby and Ellie, just lol. Masterpiece indeed.

TBH, China has banned numerous American applications in its mainland, and committed to its own domestic alternatives. As a neutral observer, I respect Chinese decisions in this regard. They have 100% right to do so.

Now USA is following suit. So why complain about this? There country - There Rules. Simple.
That is an orange and apple comparison. China ban US apps becos they refused to censor and obey Chinese law. If Google decide to follow China censorship guideline. They can operate in China but they are too stubborn.

While US ban Tiktok just becos it is a Chinese owned apps. Its Chinese owner already agree to all US demand in even setting up database in US and allow US employee to handle all US account but still not enough as just becos the owner is Chinese..

That is pure biased and ridiculous.

Why this people keep referring a Trump like if he is some sort of strategic genius. DUDE he is angry because some kids ruined his coronavirus super spreader event in Tulsa. Prepare the military to get that loser out of the White House because his is not going to leave on his own.

Friend,

Americans are also shouting Chinese espionage.

My judgement is this:

Your Country - Your Rules.
Their Country - Their Rules.

Rest is emotional talk.

You are actually saying the same point that I said in different words....that the US is basically protecting its interests by means fair or foul, like any other country.
But a part of the US attraction (and narrative) is that it is the land of the " free" ; this narrative was drummed into everyone's head incessantly and used as a foreign policy appendage .
When your halo gets diminished your friends will start deserting you by and by.

I see.

See my post (# 38) - reminded an American member of American hypocrisy.

However, USA will continue to have allies because different countries have different priorities. There are already indications of this.

German viewpoint can be different from that of Americans nevertheless.

Unfortunately, China has no avenue for symmetric retaliation and measured escalation. It already ran all the American internet companies out of China long ago. The best thing you can do in a situation like this is cut your losses and refocus your efforts elsewhere, which is what China is doing with TikTok. To do otherwise, to yell and beat your chest and make a scene to distract others - and yourself most of all - from your loss is very... Indian.

Which is why I also ask that my compatriots here keep this issue in perspective. Yes, China will have to just take an L on TikTok; sucks but that's just life sometimes. Panicking and ranting about how unfair this is isn't going to accomplish anything other than making you look weak and rattled.
