Ex-chief of army, Gen VK Singh, no longer has security or bullet-proof car

well since the talk is about Generals doing politics, the best example which i get is of JFR Jacob, who post retirement joined BJP & is attributed with the success of Indo-Israeli relation during NDA rule, this is what i call constructive politics.

.
All of them took the proper route after retirement to join politics. All of them (except George Washington) were ELECTED in the presidential election. None of them stood outside the US senate and called for its dissolution. None of them called for the gheraoing of the house of representatives. None of them instigated unruly crowds in Washington, DC. They played by the system, and did not call for the overturning of the system.

Before retirement, none of them made a media show of their careers. None of them criticized the government while in service. The most recent US army guy to criticize the govt while in office (gen mcchrystal) was quickly shown the door.

If this "son of the soil" or "son of mother india" wants to cleanse the system, let him get elected INTO parliament, rather than trying to gherao it.
+100!

Also don't forget that it is silly to draw analogies with the US. The military-poltiical dynamic is very different in America. The complete apolitical nature of the Indian military is not as present within the US military and the govt-military are much more inter-twined in the US. It is typical in the US for military personal to enter in to politics but this is not true in India whatsoever.

man how can you say that VK Singh is playing politics????? Is he joining any party?? And this is not the first time....even Nehru feared coup back in 1950s during gen. Cariappa.

.
Well.. or you can say that he is trying to bring some small change in this country. People who are famous and have skill should come forward to lead. I think more people from retired arms should join politics. Look at these politicians, 670+ mla have cases of rape and eve-teasing registered against them. Can we expect anything good from such people.

BTW in Maharastha 1 cop increment was stopped for 3 year. Have you seen this news ?

what change will be brought to India when 120 crore people of India think that they can make every law by there own, be it LokPal or be it rape crime, rather than trust the 800 MPs elected by them to do the job, do u really think that common people can understand the intricacies involved in framing a complex law such as LokPal which will bring from peon to PM of India under his ambit?? can we really bring the PM of India under Lokpal?? doesn't it involve a great security risk to our country?? I read somewhere that before if some foreign nation tries to bring instability to our nation than they have to convince 800 elected MPs but after Lokpal the job will be done by convincing just 10 people. There was a report earlier that CAG investigations are responsible for delays in many Govt. decision including that of defence procurement, what do u think will happen when Lokpal comes in the picture?? few years will take for a procurement decision after that few years will pass since Lokpal will be looking into the matter, if he says that the deal is corruption free we will go ahead, if he says it is result of kickbacks the whole procurement will just be scrapped.

+ what with hanging of a rape convict?? don't u think that this will force the convict to kill the woman after rapping so as to dispose off all the evidence since he can be given a death penalty if the girl comes in front of a court as a witness.

We have to think rationally rather than emotionally.

Sir, it is clear for all to see. He has attacked the govt many times- even called for the dissolution of parliament, he has now gone and stood in unruly mobs trying to make god knows what point.

While he was in office he didn't pointed fingers at GOI and neither did shared platforms with different persons having different political affiliations except in one case which was well within the domain of constitution .
After retiring from office he is free to go after his goal as he please. In India Gheoring is not considered unruly we have our own way of protesting ,do you know why this protest was called ?? DELHI has become rape capital of India. Many rape cases paased by but Our government failed to take any preventive measures. They needed shake up so we had to comply.
There is difference between sitting in foreign countries and daily facing the problem in day to day life.

GREAT post! 100% agreed- there is a level of ignorance when it comes to understanding framing of policies and how to play politics. All to often politcians are painted with the same brush with sweeping generalistions which means that the comman man has very low opnions of them and even less understanding of what they do. This is dangerous as it means that groups of ignorant masses can collect together and call for stupid policies (capital punishment for rape) or object to sensible and needed devlopments (nuke power plants) with little understanding as to the ramifications of their own actions.

I am all for democracy but as Winston Churchill remarked:

"The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter"

As has been noted the protests of late are directionless and are more of an excuse for hooliganism and criminalty than an actual cause.

well looking at present government even if manekshaw or cariappa would be there, they would have done same what mr singh did. Only mistake he did was not being loyal to his corrupt masters!!

PEACEFUL PROTESTS - YES.

PROTESTS INITIATED BY A RAPE RESULTING IN A DEATH OF AN INNOCENT POLICE OFFICER - NO.

Again sweeping and unfouinded generalisations. All minister of the GoI are corrupt are they? Please. This is exactly the kind of drival fed to the ignorant masses by the oppostion.

Right, I knew that sooner or later someone will make this a personal attack about sitting in foreign countries. Whether I'm in a foreign country or India, my source of information is the same as yours - mainstream media and the internet. You don't have an upper hand because you happen to be located closer to the protests. Analysing the situation is also not dependent on where you or I are.

Anyway what exactly are the protesters in delhi protesting? Protesting against rape? Does that even make any sort of sense? Do you think that potential rapists are going to be deterred because public opinion is unfavourable to them? Do you think rapists depend on votes for their actions? If not, what is thew logic in "protesting" against rape and destroying public property?

Did the outrageous gang rape happen due to government or police inaction? If not, what is the bloody point of making this a government v/s people issue? "Protesting rape" - that never made sense to me from day one. The moment I saw protests gathering force on national TV (probably the same source that you learnt it from, despite you being in India), I knew that it was bound to happen, that law and order will go for a toss. And I was right.

This is a classic case of mob fury where people are angry without knowing who to be angry against. Rebels without a cause. There is no law or policing system in the world that can prevent sadistic incidents like this from happening. All we can do in such cases is to punish the guilty ones. The only people who deserve our anger in this case are the six men who raped and assaulted the couple. Not the police, not the government.

And mind you, people in foreign countries also face problems in day to day lives.

As a patriot I am saddened we are 3rd strongest economy, 4th most potent military and best youth force. We''l overtake China by 2030 and have a very strong soft power image. Is this the WAY we treat a warriorwho shows chinks in our armor....is this the India which is shining....

We have to think rationally rather than emotionally.

When government is failed to protect the common people interest and busy in corruption and have put country in big trouble then people need to come forward. In 120 crore people more then 90% are just sheep. But rest need to come forward. We need discipline leaders.. Why do we need to afraid of lokpall bill ? Can you expect anything better from these MP's and MLA ? We should have a law to control the freedom of these politicians.

I didn't said to hang rapist. I just pointed out the no of MLA's who have such charge against them. But minimum punishment should be life imprisonment with hard working, and also death punishment for special case. We need to change a lot in law to deal with this sh!t.

Our whole system is corrupt and this is because of politicians. Politicians thinks that they are above law. They use police as their pet dog. Police has not responsibility for public. If you are rich or have some political connection, you can **** the law. All IAS/PCS or any government department ,,, well do i need to describe them ?
