Ex-chief of army, Gen VK Singh, no longer has security or bullet-proof car | NDTV.com

Government has decided to withdraw all security cover provided to former Army Chief Gen V K Singh, who has been taking part in a number of protests over corruption, Delhi gang-rape incident and other issues.

The former Army Chief was provided Z 'Plus' security cover till November 30 but in a review meeting, the Ministry of Home Affairs took a decision that he does not require any protection, Army sources said in New Delhi.

After the decision was conveyed to the Army Headquarters, it is in the process of withdrawing all vehicles including a bullet-proof car and around 30-35 personnel from his security, they said.

Seven vehicles and 30-35 personnel were deployed in his security duties round the clock, they said.

Gen V K Singh, who retired on May 31, was given a Z Plus security cover till November 30 and he was allowed to stay in Government accommodation in Delhi Cantonment area for one year after he had sought a nine-month extension from Defence Minister A K Antony.

He has been named in an FIR by the Delhi Police for his alleged role in protests against the gang rape of a girl in a moving bus on December 16.

Soon after his retirement, he was critical of the government on various issues and shared the stage with yoga guru Ramdev and Anna Hazare on Lokpal and blackmoney issues.

On the gang rape issue, he had recently said the system stands "completely exposed and defanged" as not just one daughter, but hundreds of others are equally vulnerable to predators in the face of "growing impotency" to take any action.

In late November, he had also called for the dissolution of Parliament and had called for its gherao in support of the demands raised by sugarcane farmers from Uttarakhand and Uttar Pradesh.

In the last few months of his tenure, he became the first Chief of the Army to have approached the Supreme Court against the Government on the personal issue of his date of birth.

Hardly, it is common practice for such officials to be given a certain period of extened cover after leaving officers and this period varies from office to office ie PMs are given 5 years of SPG cover after leaving office COAS seem to get 6 months (May-November)after this period an assessment is made whether to extend this cover based on threat perceptions to the particular individual. This is common practice. It seems the IA came to the conclusion that VK's didn't warrant extension- this is their prerogative.

Try and keep your objectivity and don't let your political affiliations/persuasions/bias cloud your judgement. Not everything is a Congress/GoI conspiracy sir.

I don't want to say anything about General's security but I want to make another point - IMHO he has broken an unwritten rule of Indian Armed Forces which said that Generals don't do politics, especially when they are in uniform, but he is doing politics from a long time, even when he was holding the high office of COAS, be it taking the age issue to SC or the leak of the letter. I am sorry to say but he was preparing for a Political career after retirement & preparing the ground for that. Even one of our most powerful General - Sam Manekshaw, din't bother going into politics, when he could have easily risen up the ranks b'coz of his outstanding work in 1971, in fact when Indira Gandhi asked in a tense voice to the General that is he trying to topple her govt., he famously said that u don't poke nose in my job & i will not poke in urs, thats what is needed from a General. Mr. VK Singh should help make IA a potent force, thats the need of the hour.

Mate it's not an unwritten rule. It's the law.
