The only bad thing that pakistani military dictators have done bad is that instead of banning politics completely like in other military dictatorships they always groom new political systems and politicians and then later on they are stung by the same politician that they believe add some kind of legitimacy to their rule. This is the main stupid thing that military dictators have done in all tenures in pakistan. We don't see such behaviour in other military dictatorships where during military dictatorships the politics is banned all together for decades.

I have always been admirer of Gen. Zia's strong leadership qualities, he was well spoken, brave , articulate and very honest person. He was genuinely islamic in his credentials, used to pray 5 times a day. Whatever he did with regards to implementation of islam might be controversial but his intentions were legitimate because he genuinely believed in islam otherwise he could have also presented himself as "enlightened" moderation or such crap. He also selected top generals to take care of the security of pakistan like Gen. Akhtar abdur rehman which was the reason that even during highly volatile situation on its western front from 1979-1988 pakistan was absolutely peaceful and in order from every point of view.

The Mehdi complex is EXACTLY why we are in this rut. All the Zia's and Ghulam Mohammads could not do crap about it if this gene pool had the guts to actually do something for themselves rather than look for messiahs and saviours.
We as a people are inherently incapable of self improvement on our own or even with help. This is a nation that has a national psyche of being "poor" and "destitute". It needs someone to pick it up like some child rather than getting up themselves.
Which is why I am more and more convinced things have to get much much worse, famine, floods, all out bloody civil war worse.. before things will get better. Because where democracy enabled the nations to our east to finally learn to pick betterment for themselves, here people still like to be told what is best for them.

Its a matter of self-hate perhaps, but Pakistanis.. from the stealing politicians to the commission gorging military officers.. to the "educated" middle class and the deathly poor are freeloading addicts. This is a "Sadqa" nation. 90%(if not 95%) of us are the alms mentality who will willingly accept a free meal or take another's even if we can afford one ourselves.

Democracy may fix this but essentially it will take a 100 years more from today. This is nothing new, other nations have had similar malignancy in though, but that was back in the 17th and 18th centuries. Things could be taken a little slow then; today there is no time to last.

Poor Mohammad Ali Jinnah was exactly that, he did all the work while the rest just ate off him as a the "messiah".
