Ethiopia said Friday it has achieved the first-year target of filling the mega dam on the Blue Nile River amid talks to quell tensions with neighbors Sudan and Egypt.

“The successful filling of the dam boosted Ethiopia’s credibility on the international arena,” Dina Mufti, spokesman of the Ethiopian Foreign Ministry, said in a news conference.

The leaders of Ethiopia, Sudan and Egypt met virtually again last Tuesday as part of continued negotiations on the filing and annual operation of the Ethiopian Grand Renaissance Dam (GERD).

The African Union took over facilitation of the trilateral talks in June after talks sponsored by the U.S. and the World Bank had broken down in February.

“The three countries have reached common understanding and was concluded with success and that was a victory to all the three countries,” he said.

However, sources close to the meeting who did not want to be named told Anadolu Agency that despite much talk about common understanding, there have been differences that emanate from Egypt's insistence on historical right to the Nile while other riparian countries including Ethiopia base their Nile diplomacy on natural rights.

In another development, the spokesman said 30,087 Ethiopian citizens have been evacuated from the Middle East and neighboring countries amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dina said the government facilitated the return of 656 migrant workers from Beirut, 72 from Abu Dhabi, 3,539 from Saudi Arabia, 1,026 from Kuwait and the rest from neighboring countries in Africa.

How entitled and spoiled Egyptians are to think that they can enforce a colonial era agreement, to which Ethiopia was not even a part of, to deprive Ethiopia of water that originates in their OWN land. Military dictators, wherever they are, become a curse for their nation.

Why so much ignorance.. and still posting..
Ethiopia gets more than 1000 ml of rain a year ..who is going to take its water.. that is a very ignorant comment..
Egypt wants to make sure that if there is another 10 or more years of drought.. that Ethiopia can still manage the water through its DAM.. So go get educated before coming to spew your venom here..

Not trying to spew any venom brother :)

I am open to be corrected if you come up with references against my argument. The colonial era agreement is public and can be googled. Please do tell how is it fair? On a side note, most of the problems in today's world can be traced back to cancerous European colonialism, and this case is no different.

The role of the International Law
Before examining Egypt’s legal rights on the Nile River, its very important to turn first to the international law. Until the early years of the twentieth century, there were no rules to determine how to use the international river waters among the countries. The relations between countries related to the use of the international river water began to complicate and the conflict among states seemed over how to use the water of the river. So, international law defined some rules and theories in order to regulate the relations among states and the use of the shared waters between them.
The theory of Absolute Integrity; this theory does not allow river states to use river water in a way that harms the rights of other river states. Every country whose international river runs in its region has the full right to keep the flow of Nile water in its region without reducing the percentage of water that reaches it. The political borders do not separate the river from its source to its mouth. So, when any country wants to build any structure on the river or its branches, it must first inform the countries that share the same river it with. The theory of Common Natural Resources; this theory was founded on the principle of good neighborliness and aims to the equitable utilization of international river waters between the riparian countries. According to the above theories, Egypt will offer several justifications under international law to support its claim and protect its right in the Nile River.

Was it really a success for Egypt tho, after the UNSC turning u away, african union turning u away, arab union not being able to do much- yeah u obviously have to swallow ur pride and are forced to agree on Ethiopia by Ethiopians, this is important that u understand this.

At the end it doesnt matter, with or without agreement the dam is now getting filled and my congrats to the ethiopians.

“The three countries have reached common understanding and was concluded with success and that was a victory to all the three countries,” this is from Ethiopia itself.. not a nobody like you..

Egypt have made their position clear with or without colonial era agreements - don't fill the damn so quick so as to affect water flow into the Nile valley which millions of Egyptians rely on.

Ethiopia is more than welcome to fill the damn, but should do so responsibly. Threatening the livelihoods of millions of people would be sheer recklessness.
