Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has approved parliament's ratification of an intergovernmental agreement with Japan to build a nuclear power plant at Sinop, according to a statement on his website yesterday.

On 1 April, the country's parliament - the Turkish Grand National Assembly - ratified the agreement signed by the two countries in October 2013.

Ownership of the 4800 MWe plant will be split between a consortium of Japan's Mitsubishi and Itochu, and France's Areva and GDF Suez, with 65%, and Turkey's state-run power producer EUAS, with 35%. Areva and Mitsubishi will supply four Atmea 1 reactors.

Construction of the plant is expected to start in 2017, once an environmental impact assessment (EIA) has been approved.

The Sinop plant, on Turkey's Black Sea coast, will be the country's second nuclear power plant - the first is to be built at Akkuyu, on its Mediterranean coast, with Russia's Rosatom. Turkey's ministry of environment and urban planning late last year approved the EIA that Russian-owned JSC Akkuyu NPP submitted for that project. Construction work is expected to begin on the first of Akkuyu's four 1200 MWe Gidropress-designed AES-2006 VVER pressurized water reactors this year or next. The plant is being financed by Russia under a build-own-operate model, under an intergovernmental agreement signed by Turkey and Russia in 2010.

Continued cooperation between the brotherly states of Japan and Turkey !:yahoo:
Not only that, Japanese will give us ToT about the nuclear cycle. Also, giving ToT about Uranium enrichment and Plutonium extraction is also included in the deal. More to it, in Turkey a new technological university will be founded both by Japanese and Turkish. :)

My friend, don't you know that Turkey is Japan's #1 Middl Eastern Partner? Erdogan is actually a very close friend of Abe, and Abe spares nothing in regards to this. As for the technical university between Japan and Turkey, awesome to hear this ! Where will this be located at? Close to Ankara?

Great to see Japan entering middle east and that too by technology.

Japan was a reliable partner when it comes to big projects in Turkey, we urgently need nuclear power since our huge trade deficit is caused mainly because of Energy imports.

Nuclear energy indeed is necessary for a large country like Turkey with a population of some 80 million, one of the largest in the Region. A diversified energy matrix is needed, plus I also believe that once the sanctions are removed on Iran then energy such as oil and gas from Iran can be purchased cheaper than it is now. This would also be healthy because it would reduce Turkey's dependence on Saudi Arabia or Russia. ;) ;)

We dont import any energy resources from Saudi Arabia our main suppliers are Russia , Iran and Azerbaijan.

I think Iranian gas will be only more expensive once sanctions are lifted because there will have more potential customers.
Dependence on Russia will be decreased with various energy projects in Caucasus and Central Asia though Putin is smart he proposed discount on gas and a new Pipeline called Turkish stream.
Either was Turkey is on the way to become a Energy hub from Asia to Europe.

Looking at this map the sutiation is pretty clear but the map is even incomplete without the most recent projects such as Tanap and Turkish stream for exsample.

It is so clear that Turkey is literally sitting on gold, being so close to two energy rich partners; Iran and Russia. I'm assuming that relations with Iran is improving since Erdogan recently visited Tehran and met with the Ayatollah , yes? I've been doing some research regarding this power relationship and there is a vast potential on the Turkish-Iranian Dynamic and what this could do for the greater Middle East. What's your conjecture, buddy?

Hmm im not sure, Turkey and Iran are sitting in two opposite camps and almost disagree on everything regarding ME, some Iranian officials even demanded to cancel of Erdogans visit after he promised to support KSA logistically in Yemen, but if we believe the diplomatic language everything is fine. Welcome to ME. :yu:

There is definately a huge potential for improvement in economic and trade between Turkey and Iran and also between Turkey and KSA but this is ME you can never predict what will happen tomorrow, Greece became the most realiable neighbor for Turkey regarding building a Pipeline, that alone says enough.
