This is the DRDO AEW&C system..with the platform being Brazilian Embraer EMB 145I..salient features encompass :-
1. The primary sensor on the aircraft is a S-band Active Electronically Scanned Array (AESA) radar with two planar arrays mounted on the dorsal antenna unit. The system's radar will have a normal detection range of 250 km and an extended detection range of 375-km.
2. The system provides a 240 degrees (120 degrees on either side) of coverage that can be stretched to 300 degrees with some loss of range. The Phase 3 of this project is projected to possess almost 360 degree capability with radar arrays mounted in the form of a triangle, where each array covers 120 degrees.
3. The secondary radar has an identification friend or foe function (IFF), while communication and electronic support measures enables the aircraft to detect and identify hostile emitters. Datalinks to network the AWACS with fighters, and ground based control systems are provided, as well as SATCOM (Satellite Communication System).
4. A self-protection suite consists of missile approach and radar warning receivers, plus countermeasures dispensers.
5. The AEW&C features voice and data communication over UHF voice and data channels.
6. The aircraft will have a service ceiling of 35,000ft (10,700m) and a radar operational altitude of 25,000ft. The system works with 5 operators and allows for upto 7 crew members to be resting at a time.
7. It will have an aerial refueling nozzle for high endurance.
The Indian Air Force will receive three such platforms in the next three years.
