Only 5500 megawatts are being produced while circular debt has reached PKR 675 billion

ISLAMABAD (Dunya News) – It was stated by the sources that only 5500 megawatts of electricity are being produced to meet nationwide needs which is a record low.

Government and private power plants have reduced their electricity production due to non-payments. Circular debt reached as far as PKR 675 billion because the private and government power plants were not granted billions of rupees in payment.

Currently, the country is facing long hours of unannounced load shedding. The big cities are witnessing unannounced power outage of about 4 to 6 hours every day.

If the power houses are not returned payments, the duration of load shedding is expected to worsen.

It can't be 550 MW's anyway, i think there's a typo.

But the thing that worries me is Rs 675 billion circular debt

You are right. I guess that a zero is missing. It is likely 5500 MW. From two days, my hometown is facing almost 18 Hours load shedding.

Sir! Have a look if you can find any official figures. @Zaki

. . .
There have been a number of power plants that have come online due to all the infrastructure cpec and other projects...

What gives? How is this possible?

I've mentioned this before that just because you build powerplants doesn't mean you will have power. If the electricity board can't afford to buy the electricity, nothing is coming to your home.

That is true. But what you don't mention is that new projects have electricity production which is cheaper than existing ones.

(Numbers for illustration only)
Lets say that you need 20,000 MW and have infrastructure for 25,000 MW. Lets say it a cost of $1.5 BN for 10,000 MW. Of which you can only pay $ 2 Bn. Result is actual generation of 15,000 MW. Shortfall of 5000 MW.

Now lets say with new projects the infrastructure remains at 25,000 MW, but cost is 750 Million per 10,000 MW. You can purchase 20,000 MW for 1.5 Bn. Result? No loadshedding.
