For the last eight years, the Egyptian armed forces have been fighting in the Sinai, with little success, against what is at once an Islamist insurrection and a tribal rebellion against the central state. After having failed to eradicate social and economic poverty among the Bedouins of the region, Egypt now seems to favour an alliance with certain tribes but has still not been able to subdue the guerilla movement.

Seems Sisi's war in the Sinai hasn't been going well.

Another wishful thinking of a Turkish hater ....:-)

as you see in the below map .... all what you hear is that area circled with red in the vicinity of Gaza Strip ..... to eradicate all those terrorists without causing harm to Egyptian and Palestinians in both sides of boarders... The army and police was taking bullets instead of the common people .... destroying tunnels from Gaza Strip where Terrorists can move easily.

I believe you as a Turk should consider the repel Kurds rights .... before supporting terrorists in Egypt.

ISIS swallows all those irrelevant, disorganized tiny self-declared Jihadi groups and tribal people. As they did in Iraq, they're all irrelevant. ISIS is active in Sinai and that's all there is. Here you are trying to legitimize them..

Sisi said during the April 22 inauguration ceremony that those who are talking about Sinai should be aware about what the state has achieved there in the past six years. He said that the state has spent 600 billion Egyptian pounds ($38 billion) on Sinai infrastructure projects, highlighting the state’s commitment to reconstructing Sinai.

“Our national security is not valued in money,” he said. Sisi also encouraged investors and businesses to invest in Sinai.

Businessman Mohamed Farag Amer told Al-Masry Al-Youm April 23 that he is very pleased with what the president said about the achievements and plans that have been implemented in Sinai.

“The Egyptian state did the impossible in Sinai, especially in the agriculture and investment sectors,” Amer said.
Mutasim Rashed, an economic adviser at the Egyptian Federation of Investors Associations‎, told the newspaper there are many fields ripe for investment in Sinai, especially agriculture such as fish farming and the production of olives and medicinal herbs.

Economists hailed the national projects in Sinai, saying they will have a positive impact on the Egyptian economy.
“The development of Sinai is a major focus within the framework of the state’s general strategy to improve its infrastructure, provide new job opportunities for the youth and attract investors,” economist Rashad Abdo, head of the Egyptian Forum for Economic and Strategic Studies, told Al-Monitor.

“The development of Sinai is an important means to fight terrorism,” Abdo added.

North Sinai has witnessed a number of terror attacks since 2012, when late President Mohammed Morsi took over. After he was ousted in 2013, the attacks gradually decreased.

“Sisi has made an infrastructure revolution in Sinai to link it to the rest of the country after it was a hub for terrorists,” Abdou said, adding that Sinai will soon be inhabited by millions of Egyptians in search of a better future.
Among the projects implemented in North Sinai in the last two years are the construction of 11 integrated residential agricultural development clusters, the new city of Rafah, the construction of a desalination plant in el-Arish city and the an industrial complex in the Jafafa area.

Passant Fahmy, an economist and member of parliament's economic affairs committee, told Al-Monitor that such mega-projects send an important message both inside and outside Egypt.

How much of this violence is linked to Hamas?

Hamas is not involved, but that does not mean there aren't young sympathizers in Gaza who try to join these insurgents in Sinai. Most of them are Egyptian or other foreigners. The Egyptian army has relocated people near the border with Gaza and moved them to other towns/cities and has destroyed much of the tunnels with Gaza and made a large buffer zone there. I think the reason most of the clashes occur on the northern coast is because Egyptian army has prioritized a strategy to move them away from Suez Canal and Gulf of Aqaba/Strait of Tiran. So, the majority of them are locals or foreigners coming from the West of Sinai but the insurgents are essentially besieged by the army in the north and some travel by sea to get these cities.

Keep in mind Hamas has intensive campaign against sympathizers in Gaza. Several attacks have been foiled inside of Gaza the last month. It's more extensive than people think but they don't like publicizing it too much. Egypt and Hamas should continue to work together. And Egypt should find solution for some tribes in Sinai and Israel should allow for building of seaport off Gaza's shores.

ISIS extremists are definitely present there but one of bigger problems is situation of tribes there. They face death threats from ISIS and also military campaign from Egyptian army. They are poor people, I've been there many times and much of their income relied on illegal trade with Gaza. Ever since the instability in Sinai, Egyptian army took measures such as relocating them from cities near the border with Gaza and razing those cities down. They do not have a good source of income anymore and some may be frustrated and be more welcoming to ISIS insurgents.

Overall, it isn't a good situation, Egypt and its tribes need to make up and Egypt needs to find for them better economic opportunities. Also Israeli's and Palestinians need to come to resolution. Israel wouldn't mind the situation in Sinai at a medium tempo. If Hamas collapsed one day they will bring their military back into Gaza and if there is lawless situation in Sinai they will attempt to divert Gaza population into Sinai by military and political means. Right now they do not prefer it reaches to that and thus are making sure Gaza doesn't collapse, but in future they may feel that is the right course assuming international community will intervene on Egypt's behalf if this insurgency got out of control.

Tribalism is the main reason why the Arab world is in tatters. How can your tribe be more important than the entire nation?! I don't understand this mindset.
