Egypt mulls JF-17 co-production

The hardware given to KSA is pretty much subject to approval from Tel Aviv. Second, the aircraft itself, avionics and armament are downgraded and inferior to that of the USAF or IAF's similar air crafts. If you remember, the KSA AWACS didn't get upgrades for over a decade because the Israelis were objecting to providing AESA tech and other upgrades to KSA AWACS........so in a way, yes, these toys are for everyone minus the US and Israel.

Nobody is denying that they "WERE" downgraded, I am interested to know your input about the F-15SA. And would you deny that they are the most advanced F-15s ever built?

Are you sure? from what I remember the original F-15S were downgraded and that was one of the primary reasons the RSAF opted for typhoons : Paint Scheme: The most apparent difference between the S and E models is their paint scheme. The E model has a one tone gunship grey color, while the S model uses a two-tone 'Mod Eagle' paint scheme.

Engines: The F-15S is equipped with Pratt&Whitney F100-PW-229 engines, the stronger one from the two P&W engine models used in the Strike Eagles.

Its radar, the APG-70S is based on the APG-70 radar of the Strike Eagle, but with its main features significantly downgraded. Radar bandwidth is 60% of the 'original' and only 16 channels are available instead of 32. Although the APG-70S has SAR capabilities, the ground mapping resolution is severely limited: the minimal size of the HRM the radar is able to generate is 4,7 nm, compared to the 0,67 nm of the APG-70.

Navigation and Targeting Pods: LANTIRN pods are also degraded. Instead os using the 'standard' AAQ-13 navigation pod and AAQ-14 targeting pod, Saudi Arabia received 48 pairs of AAQ-19 'Pathfinder' navigation pods and AAQ-20 'Sharpshooter' targeting pods (use their original designation number and add 6 to them). The navigation pod is downgraded in its ECM modes (it works reasonably well against potential russian-made Iraqi and Iranian threats, but performs poorly against US aircraft) and it has no ECCM mode. The AAQ-20 targeting pod has basically the same features as the AAQ-14, with the exception of being incompatible with AGM-65's hands-off modes and lacking some of the A/A features of the LANTIRN targeting pod.

Avionics: The S model's autopilot lacks the terrain following capability which is present in the E model. Its navigation system is a laser ring gyro INS coupled with a commercial-grade GPS system - although it works well, it is definitely not as precise as military-grade systems.

Weapons: The United States took great care in the area of weapons. The F-15S cannot employ the wide range of weapons the Strike Eagle can: AGM-65D/G Maverick missiles, CBU-87 cluster bombs, GBU-10, GBU-15 and GBU-24 smart bombs belong to the inventory of the Saudi version. Understandably, the F-15S does not have the wiring to be able to employ nuclear weapons. BRU-46/A and BRU-47/A weapon racks were initially lacking from F-15S delivered to Saudi Arabia, but this restriction was cleared later and 'normal' CFT's were delivered between 1998 and 2000.

Don't get me wrong they are still formidable aircraft and for most advesaries should be enough - however the USA still finds a way to protect Israel's interests and will never supply Gulf states equipment that will jeopardize it's Jewish ally.

I think you are wrong. PAF is proud to be the first Asian country to equip with laser guided bomb and abilities. And it's the F-16A you all are using against the soviet.

The most advance version belongs to South Korean airforce and republic of Singapore airforce. Full air to air and air to ground with AESA and compatible with AWACS.

Now lets get back at Topic, here is something I want to discuss and is pretty much relevant to this Topic. If moderators thinks this is another subject then they can move it to a new Thread.

Should CAC/PAC and Shaanxi Aircraft Company provide-offer combined Y-8 balance beam AEW&C with JF-17/FC-1 as A Package.

Negotiations for JF-17/FC-1 might have taken place with EAF and AzAF [Azerbaijan].

Today AEW&C play an important role, AEW&C are eyes in the skies. Considering Thailand purchased or either were offered by Sweden Saab 340 Erieye AEW&C as a package for the best value. Should or would China offer anything similar to potential buyers to make it into a formidable package especially for EAF.

Considering EAF have 8 E-2 Hawkeyes with the only disadvantage it may detect enemy aircrafts and F-16s may be scrambled…those F-16s are without BVRs severely restricted. As we see isrealis have clear advantage. Detection is good but to counter enemy EAF has no Fangs. US would never want JF-17s to somehow be data linked to E-2 Hawkeyes nor is there any permission to tamper with Systems onboard E-2. I Think this would be a excellent offer Y-8/KJ-200 AEW&C paired Package with JF-17/FC-1 if someday deals go through with potential buyers.

It makes sense for Air forces in the future going for 12+ JF-17/FC-1 [especially EAF]. Although we do not know the realistic potential buyers or who might have signed firm contacts that is an insider information we would need to dig in.

To answer your question, yes, the F-15S were the most advanced built. But it doesn't mean that the same F-15S's are on par with the F-15's given to Israel. Israelis are always assured of their superiority in the region. So what anyone else gets in the region is always inferior to what the Israelis have. But, outside of Israel, these F-15S are the most advanced in the region, even with the induction of EFT. However, the EFT is a newer airframe and has a lot of potential to grow. The F-15 is being replaced with F-22 and F-35's.

The potential buyer for JFT aren't very rich countries just yet. The plane needs to mature up a little, come closer to F-16 B52 at least and then countries will buy it. I won't suggest making a package with any kind of an AEW system as these countries are looking for affordable options to replace their old Mirages, F-7's, F-5's, F-4's etc. Not F-16's block 40 or Mirage 2000-5. This doesn't mean that the JFT isn't a good plane but it just means that it's low cost is an added bonus for countries with smaller economies / smaller budgets.
The Chinese will never allow their AEW platform to be sold to Egypt just yet. These are their first - second generation AWACS planes. Once they get to a couple of levels above where they are now, they'll start to sell the previous versions. No country outsources its most important defense tech.
Last, Egypt gets a LOT of money through the US in the form of aid. They won't jeopardize the billion plus dollars they get from the US to get the Chinese tech. However, they should be able to buy a few supplementing squadrons of JFT's with BVR. The data sharing between the JFT and the E2C can happen through third party solutions or through ground control relay. I think Pakistan and the Indians are either using it or are developing the tech. Both use Chinese - Russians planes along with Western equipment that uses the Link 16 communication protocol. So they'll both need a solution for it. Both have good technical brain power so shouldn't take too long before you'll see hybrid solutions that won't compromise their contracts with their manufacturers but will allow the information to be decoded across platforms.

Saudi Arabia recently sold 5 surplus C-130 to Turkey but only with permission of U S Govt.

they gave the f-16 with only short range air to air capability, no air to ground mode and certainly no BVR capability
