Indian C-295W variant is going to be different from other C-295 variants. It will have winglets and more powerful engines to improve operation capabilities over high terrains of Himalayan mountains.

Makes EACH Brahmos missile worth 4.8 Million $ :disagree: .......... Brahmos is screwing GoI.

USD 2.5 billion for 56 C-295 means each Aircraft will cost around 45 Million $.

Elephant shows one teeth and eats with another... we are talking defense here everything is not open as it may seem, just because 89 is printed it may not be just that

If the forces and the govt act smart, this can be a real steal. The IAF's An-32s will need to be replaced in the near future, and the C-295 outclasses them in every parameter. There are 105 An-32s in active service. The C-295 can be a good replacement for both Avros and An-32s, which will bring more commonality, and lower procurement costs. (And much lower operational and fuel costs.)

IMO, the entire fixed wing light transport class of aircrafts in all the military and paramilitary forces should be borne by these C-295s. Only the medium weight transports seem to be stuck in limbo, with the MRTA or MTA or whatever is envisioned. If that doesn't come to fruition, a similar make in India deal for C-130J-30 (non spec force version) should be thought about.
The MTA is lined up as the replacement for the An-132s. The C-295 should definitely be adopted by all those Indian users in need for such a class of a/c like the ICG, IN, BSF and CRPF etc etc and I'm sure this will happen.

I have got to say though the MoD is doing a pretty good job of taking chunks out of their "to do list". a year ago this list was more than double what it is today.

And this all comes at backdrop of China visit .Enough said . Wonder what could be in our shopping list for 2016 :dance3: Poor neighbors :flame:
Let's not get ahead of ourselves, these are all deals that should have been cleared years ago. The Indian Mil as a whole is still in a pretty poor state and whilst their is now light at the end of the tunnel one shouldn't get complacent.

Is this the final nod? Or does some other body has to approve it? Maybe Negotiaions?

Or I mean is the Airbus deal done now?

This is the decision by DAC i.e. the Defence Acquisition Council which consist of the Prime Minister and Defence Minister. :P

It does not get any more Higher than this. This is IT. The Buck Stops here. :D
Now the files go to the CCS (headed by the PM) for final approval but this is more of a formality than anything these days, once a deal is cleared by the DAC it is all but done.

So these are history now ( By end of 2015) New objectives start by 2016 with new shopping list .Entirely will be under Made in India . Wonder if we could go for new batch of MK2 as we know MK1 is partially paralyzed . Some momentum in AMCA , LCA LCH LUH and big one could be Su35S (may be of may be not)

It's a certainty, there was news the follow-on order for 7 (and replace 1 that crashed) had been signed last year but not sure about that, looks like it is still pending.

They want more than 6-10 but the production line closing has hampered their options. Now it is said they are seriously looking at buying 3 more from the 10 "white tails" but let's see, the MoD need to move FAST if they want to get those last birds or someone else will snatch them up.

The GoI needs to raise defence spending, again it was below 2% of GDP for 2015-16. I understand the focus is on the economy but sub-2% is just pathetic. it needs to be at LEAST 2%, if not 2.5% for the next decade or so.

Looks like we will go for follow on if Indo-Russian MTA delayed .Most likely . But lots of scope for export orders too. New improved engine power procedure for high altitude and improve winglets for hot - cold climatic conditions makes it even easier :bunny:

From what I hear it will be the Sun Group or something, I haven't heard of them before but apparently they are based in Gurgeon and have already carried out a feasibility studied for setting up a massive production plant in the South- either Goa or TN. This was all done after Putin's visit to India.

HAL will also be involved along with a few other private players.


A shame because Reliance's "aerospace city" sounded like it could be pretty attractive, this deal pretty much kills that.

They will set up a plant in India.

But its also possible that Sun and HAL will have joint holding of 51% and the aircraft will be build in HAL.

Now at least all the tenders where singlle bid situation occurs and which has no deviations and is completely clean , the chances of approval runs higher. This saves us from "vortex" of cancellations and re tendering.

The Avro replacement is late but i still welcome it openly. At least its now more or less a step taken in the right direction.
But we do need more on Medium Weight category lifters.. A proper plan and perhaps indigenous project.

Well these are only DAC clearances and far away from any signed contract, but at least for the Avro replacement that's a good step, seems like Parrikar has understood that these aircrafts are important. Other than that, we already have the MTA development for the medium class.

Am still not getting the point of Make in India initiative for just 145 units. of M 777 ?

Any defence procurement is demanding at least 30% offsets to be diverted to India, that's the policy that was implemented by the former government. Nowadays that's just called Make in India, as a general term for anything that gives back some production to India (offsets, assembly or licence production lines included). So no matter if it's 145 or just 45 howitzers, there must be offsets diverted back to India, but the smaller the deal and the more difficult the ToT relation with the vendor country, the less important things we get in return. In this case, we hardly get the assembly of the gun that will be produced in the US, to it's platform, that could be produced in India.

There are no competitors anymore, since no other foreign vendor was ready to comply to the demands of the tender and no other Indian privat company was ready to team up with a foreign partner for such a small order. TATA and Airbus were the only once that were ready, but so far the deal was stuck in the single vendor situation.
The C295 has a low unit cost (often given with $50 million) and low operational costs, compared to the C27J for example, which makes it an ideal replacement for the lower end logistical transports. But since they are in the same class as the AN32s, they will surely do far more than the Avros they replace. The new W version comes with improved performance for hot and high regions and still is also the ideal platform for ICG' and IN's MPA requirement too, which is why we need to expand this order as soon as possible.
