@gambit : Any idea why there is a normal mode and an extended mode for the radar? (Range in normal mode is 200 kms for fighter sized targets, and range is 300 km in extended mode.) What is the penalty in extended mode?

To me it makes sense if you were just doing 3 for globemaster, but would make less sense if you wanted to do maybe 10-15.

Obviously you would need a cheaper to operate variant, but Super hercules would still be better.

But I get it you didn't oeprate it then, what about now, any plans for the next generation AEW based on C-130.

Though I also heard India is working on its own medium transport after Tejas, any truth to this?



KJ-200 is the beam version on a Shanxi Y-8.

KJ-2000 is a AESA radar based on L-76.


The next generation will incorporate new technology from the ZDK-03 designed for Pakistan and from our own naval radars and other radar researches, and it will be based on Y-9.

KJ-500 is the one on top, KJ-200 is on the bottom.

KJ-500 and KJ-3000 will make up of the next generation of AEW&C for China, KJ-3000 is the next generation radar most likely based on the new Y-20, whenever that's ready.

Turning a C17 into such aircraft is a waste. Its equivalent to turning a C5 Galaxy into an AWACs plane as well instead of being a transport plane.

IF India wants some which I know they won't since they already made their own, they can buy these.

The extended range is for the 2 m^2 target too.

Not based on the source, since it clearly linked the 200Km only to that size. The extended range surely will have it's limitations, otherwise they would have stated 300Km for that target right away. It can be a different size, or basic detection rather than propper tracking capability, but we might need another source to understand that.

Who said they forget it? They simply avoided to state a propper figure, which is not surprising, even Saab or Beriev does that, by usually stating detection range for fighter, bomber or naval targets, without giving propper RCS figures.
But you can turn it around too, if it would be 300Km for 2m², why would they bother to reduce it by stating 200Km in the first place? If you have such a capability, you don't sell your product short of that right?

IIRC,most RADAR's dont operate at peak o/p.
So that value might be for peak o/p.
