There is a hot debate about carving out Telangana State out of Andra Pradesh. Telangana was merged into Andra State in 1956 to form Andra Pradesh. Now some people in the State want to carve out Telangana State again. I have heard that BJP supports the formation of Telangana whereas Congress opposes it.

I am interested in the opinion of the Indian members of PDF.

For or against ?

Andhra Pradesh consists of three parts ,Telengana, Andhra and Coastal of which Telangana is the poorest and Andhra the most prosperous . But the economic hub of hyderabad is located inside Telangana. If Telanga state is formed, Hyd would be the capital. Rich people of Andhra who have invested heavily in Hyd fear they might lose their influence if Hyd goes to Telangana. And the people of telangana believe they will get better opportunities if they could form the state with Hyd as the capital. I support the people of Telangana.

I think rather than making a new province and upsetting rich of Andhra, India should invest more to better develop Talangana. Its a win-win situation for both

The complaint is, because Andhra is influential economically and politically, the politicians don't care about Telangana.

Isn't Telangana a language?

Does that mean that this will be a newly created province based on language?

They speak Telugu language just like the rest of the state. Not sure if they are ethnically different. But historically it was part of the Muslim Nizam rule. Andhra was part of the British Madras Presidency.

I think there has been misgivings about their future in greater Andhra Pradesh, on the part of people of Telangana who feel that they have not been given fair deal and their representation is diluted and drowned out in the Greater Andhra Pradesh. They want to have control of their destiny and their State Affairs. BJP supports this move while Congress party opposes it.

Actually there is one language in all three provinces of Andhra Pradesh state which is Telugu. Telangana is one province which is poor and want to make their own state. There will be two Telugu speaking states- Telangana with Hyderabad city as the capital and Andhra.

Creating new states is more than just what we think.

The debate remains on which is better - smaller or larger states or it does not matter - Governance matters not the size.

Those for small states cite the example of Haryana little realising that its location ( West , North & South of NCR) gives it all the leverage & advantage . The edge of a very large state - UP touching NCR on the East ( NOIDA) is also flourishing.

There are newly formed states like Jharkhand & Chattisgarh who have nothing to show. While whats left of Bihar after Jharkhand was formed has flourished due to better governance not reduction in size. Nitish would have done a good job in a large state too.

The truth is that its a racket. More states benefit everyone - More Governors, Chief Ministers, Cabinet Ministers, More Secretaries for the IAS, more Commissioners of Police - in short promotions for the Babus & money making opportunities for Politicians - not to mention having a small No of MPs who are worth their weight in gold in coalition politics.

Telengana, Gorkhaland and other demands for states needs to be seen in this light.

The size does not matter - Governance does.

Hope this helps.

On the other side of the coin, some people claim the the larger State is not responsive to their group as some other group members enjoy inordinate powers in the bigger State. This is the main complaint of Telangana State residents who feel Andhra residents take up all the jobs at the expense of Telangana people.

Generally, the conventional wisdom is that smaller administrative units are more responsive to the needs of the people, universally.

I guess the debate will go on. A lot depends on how the people of telangana vote on the issue. If BJP wins, Telangana may become a reality. Historically, Telangana use to be a separate State in its own right.

There were over 500 states that merged to form India in 47.

We have examples of smaller units that have not been of much help.

Its the vested interests that are pushing for smaller states. For instance in Pak, will dividing Punjab help ?

.
I think it's always better to divide big states 'coz a section of people always feel left out. Even my state Uttarakhand was carved out of UP and thank god for that :cheesy:, back when we were in UP we had 6-7 hrs load shedding everyday in doon, now we are exporting surplus power to delhi and UP. I have heard from my gult friends that the main problem regarding telengana issue is the question of inclusion of hyderabad into the new state.
