US talks tough after Musharraf expose

Washington, Sep.15 : The United States has said that it is taking revelations by former Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf that aid provided by America for the war against terrorism was diverted during his tenure to strengthen defences against India seriously.

State Department spokesman Ian Kelly told reporters here on Monday that Washington takes all such allegations seriously and there is a procedure to investigate any violation, diversion of its aid by any country. But Kelly refused to confirm if any investigation in this regard was already on.

He also said that the allegations were not specific and as of now the US was not aware of any such violations.

"This is a former President who has made these allegations. We take seriously any allegations like this. But simply we don't have the details to be able to respond to the allegations," Kelly said at a news briefing.

In an interview to a Pakistani news channel, Musharraf admitted that he had violated the rules governing the use of the military aid, but justified his action, saying he had "acted in the best interest of Pakistan".

India's Minister of State for External Affairs, Shashi Tharoor, said Musharraf's revelation did not come as a surprise.

"We have for some years now arguing that the only problem we have with the US military aid to Pakistan is its misuse against us," Tharoor said in New Delhi.

Its surprising, how Indian top govt official pass statement without confirming and totally rely on their media.

This is reality. Where is Pakistani Hindustani bhai bhai that some members were shouting in this forum a few days ago.

The fact is most Indians are nationalists, even if they are born outside India but their roots are Indian. For them India and being Indian is everything...and Pakistan they see as an enemy who broke their bharat.

This was written from an Indian defence analyst:

Stable Pakistan not in India’s interest

WASHINGTON: Former president Gen (retd) Pervez Musharraf on Tuesday denied saying that while he was in power, he allowed using US military aid to Pakistan to strengthen its defences against India.

In a statement issued in Philadelphia, Mr Musharraf said the issue highlighted by some Indian leaders and media was not even raised in the interview. The former president is currently in the United States on a lecture tour.
The Indian media reported on Monday that in an interview to a Pakistani television channel, Mr Musharraf acknowledged using US military aid meant to fight the extremists to strengthen Pakistan’s defences against India.

‘No question was asked regarding US funds for fighting the militants in this interview or at any other time,’ he said. ‘I have never said Pakistan violated any agreement.’

Pakistan, he said, ‘never violated any agreement or miss-utilised US funds’ for strengthening its defences against India.

‘As far as the equipment issued to a military unit is concerned, the equipment moves wherever the unit is deployed,’ he said. ‘The US at the time was aware of what we were doing.’

Musharraf should try to get in contact with western media ASAP, especially CNN and explain the entire situation on television and expose India's dirty tricks to the entire world.

Such desperate attempts to create a stir but still, no cigar - at the end of the day, no traction.

Why?? The allegation is not just false, it's idiotic and the media can do what they want about it, but since there is no violation of contractual obligation and the US govt is satisfied that there was no vikolation contractual obligations, why the hysteria??

lol whenever some truth comes out its either a propaganda or done by indian stooges and whenever pakistan is accused of anything its gotta be a conspiracy by indian/jews/americans/martians!:hitwall:.pakistan should stop playing the victim card and smell the coffee now.:coffee:

.
well, previously all propaganda was mainly streaming from otherside. India always take advantage of his size. Pakistan, now first time in history( thanks to Musharraf who free the meida) now responding India on every front. Which is very hard for Indians at this moment to digest. But its reality.
If India control the media and stop spreading propaganda, that would help to resolve bilateral issues, otherwise its going to be tit for tat.
Best living example of Indian trust is occupation of Siachin glacier. PA trust Indian, move back and Indian moved their army on Pak post. And all started again.

Did you even bother to read the refutation of Musharraf and listen to his comments in the video clip of the actual interview?

The clip is clear - Musharraf did not say anything close to what the ToI is insinuating. I am surprised you chose to comment without even going through the material refuting the ToI story.

i did actually and i am afraid hes developing the typical " u turn" habit we are so used to see in statesmen.i saw the original interview and it was quite clear that he was implementing the funds and equipments meant for fighting taliban were diverted to strengthen capabilities against india.

although i do agree the whole american idea of arming the pakistan to fight taliban is bullsh-t.if thats really the case, why not take back the equipments after the fight against taliban is over?;)

Could you point out the part in the clip (time) where he says that?

Perhaps that was a section I missed, because the part I heard correlates to the comments translated in the first post of this thread.

You mean to suggest that the rest of the worlds armies leave behind all their weapons and equipment when they move from one location to another?

US aid was just to use against terrorists. NOT against India.

US is giving us nuclear fuel and we are suppose to use it for non military purpose. then according to your logic can we say we have produced enough electricity for this month so will make bombs with the remaining nuclear fuel.

Extremely bad analogy - the nuclear fuel provided for civilian use stays in the reactors and has nothing to do with the Indian weapons program, its ballistic missiles or military when used in the form it is intended for --- On the other hand, a Cobra gunship, artillery, F-16 sniper pods or F-16's themselves (assuming they were provided for COIN, which they were not), rifles, ammunition, body armor, NVG's etc. are all issued to regular Pakistan Military units, not a civilian authority like the police (which is the case in your analogy of the nuclear reactor fuel).

Therefore, when these units are deployed elsewhere, the weapons they serve with, helicopters, artillery, rifles etc. all go with those units. Armies do not keep two sets of equipment - one for doing X and a copy of the same stuff for doing Y.

India's own military forces combating insurgents will use the same weapons against insurgents that they will against China and Pakistan.

A better example of your nuclear fuel analogy would be if all this equipment was issued to the Pakistani police, and the military decided to take it over and deploy it at the Eastern front.

Absurd argument really, and I am surprised you guys think it good enough to continue making it.
