Dhaka Seeks Transit to Pakistan via India

Is it only BD - Pakistan trade route? Its basicall BD-INDIA-Pakistan trade route. Indian businessman will use the route for their own trade with Pakistan as well as BD will use that for India as well as Pakistan. In the middle nepalis cargos could still join the corridor.

Lets wait and see when India is going to allow trade route to BD and Nepal. So far India had always been unwilling

. .
Once India is able to reach Afghanistan via Pakistan, rest of the CAR and Iran will be thru there. How will Pakistan prevent it?

I think, you do not really understand protocol. Is it possible for any country to keep on cheating without a repercussion? Can Indian goods be going to central asia without being noticed by Pakistan? Do you think there will be a hundred freight trains every hour? There will be a limitation, for sure, of the number of trains.

Without increasing the number of goods trains, it is just not possible for India to do business with central asia. Pakistan will not give a free corridor. It will be a transit or possibly a transhipment, whereby Indian goods are re-loaded into Pakistani goods train. The number of freight trains will be limited so that Indian goods only satisfy demands in Afghanistan, and not beyond that point.

actually i don't think it is going to bring any changes in the region if this transit route is restricted to Pakistan>>>India>>Bangladesh only. I don't think it will be economically viable as we have very little bilateral trade with Bangladesh

You see all these countries are rivals in International Market and most of the products that Bangladesh exports are same as we do in Pakistan. For example both countries are heavily relying upon Agricultural sector and both countries are major producers and exporters of food items such as Rice.... So there will be a huge sector that will only compete with each other and unfortunately both countries are not industrialized so forget about exporting quality products.

Yes if Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka & Burma are also given access through this route.....it will be significant change in the region but i am afraid its all win-win for Pakistan only and India wouldn't want to see that. India would need Central Asian route in exchange but if that happens its all win-win for India as they are heavily industralized comparing to other countries in this subcontinent. They offer far cheaper rates and tarrifs so they will grab the major chunk in the market in this scenario

I don't see this transit route being materalized for now as if its only restricted to Pak + BL only via India route - there will not be really anything to trade amongst two countries

We are happy to trade via ferry i guess...no trouble?

Please note the news below to see that BD, Bhutan, Burma, Nepal Indian NE and central India all are to be integrated. Click the link to see the map. Only Pakistan and Afghanistan remain still outside the new arrangement. These two countries should also be integrated under SAARC platform.

Moreover, I remember an old news that said that the proposed route will be Dhaka-Nepal-Delhi-Lahore. So, you get access to Nepal, and then also to Burma and other ASEAN countries. It may not take Pakistani goods to reach ASEAN within 10 days, whereas shipping by sea takes no less than one month. Central asia and Iran are different subject outside of SAARC.

Dhaka okays crucial highway link to Kolkata
Will boost transit facilities, reduce distance between northeastern states and W Bengal
Ajay Banerjee
Tribune News Service
New Delhi, September 24

In major development, India’s eastern neighbour Bangladesh has finally agreed to start the construction of a highway that will not only provide transit facilities, ensuring easy movement of goods, but also drastically shorten the circuitous route — crucial from the military point of view — between northeastern states and the port city of Kolkata.

Sources said Bangladesh has promised to start the construction work in the next few weeks. The project — to be primarily financed by India — is part of the larger Asian Highway network project connecting the Asian nations. The highway project between India and Bangladesh had been hanging fire for more than five years, with Dhaka stalling it for one reason or the other — primarily due to pressure from Pakistan and China.

The change came after the Sheikh Hasina Government came to power and in July 2009 Indian negotiators managed to push Bangladesh to ink the intergovernmental agreement. However, the construction work didn’t take off. “But now, following cooperation from Bangladesh and persuasion from India, the last obstacle has been cleared ,” said sources.

Two routes have been okayed. The first one will enter from Bengal into Bangladesh at the existing Benapole land port on the border and run across eastwards via Jessore and Dhaka and passing through Sylhet, located on the northeastern edge of Bangladesh, it will enter Assam/Meghalaya.

The second axis will start from North Bengal and enter the neighbouring country at Panchgarh and run southwards via Srirajganj to Dhaka and further southeast to Cox Bazar and Chittagong before entering into Mayanmar. India will be able to use both routes.

Once ready, the highway will solve India’s major problem of moving goods into northeastern states of Nagaland, Tripura, Mizoram and Manipur. At present, it can take up to five days for a truck from Kolkata to reach these areas, adding up to the costs besides the time delay.

Similarly, the highway will give the northeastern states a better and a speedy access to the sea port.

Originally, the intergovernmental agreement on the Asian Highway Network was adopted in November 2003 in Bangkok and opened for signature in Shanghai, China in April 2004 and thereafter at United Nations Headquarters in New York between May 2004 and December 2005. Some 29 Asian countries had signed the agreement in 2004.

You are utterly wrong. Bangladesh does not export agro products except little raw jute. We do export some shrimp as well.
Even though BD is rival to garment and textile but we do import cotton from Pakistan. We can also import coarse rice, wheat from Pakistan if the train service is available. Bangladesh is not looking forward to export much in Pakistan but we can import a lot.

India is not heavily industrialized but only 29% of the GDP comes from industry. For BD its 28%. India's major export is dimaond/jewellery which could rival with Pakistan but I dont think central asia is a good market for those products. Other than that Pakistan need not to worry.

You are wrong. I see enormous potential to this route. You have to think about PK-India trade as well not only BD-Pakistan.

Well i say if it happens its good for all nations in the sub con't we should live in peace so help us GOD.

.
that was great cracking joke

It is actually not a joke as far as i think,Indian navy had already gained berthing rights in oman, and when we can gain rights for navy its easy for us to use it's port for entering the Middle east and central asian markets

Also India is deeply involved in Iranian Chabbar port, through it we can easy access to Afghan and central asia

In future we will b present big time present inside Central Asia and middle east much to Pakistan's dismay,it will b good we Pakistan help as in establishing that,if not it can only helplessly watch India trading in this parts while its access to the eastern sides cut out by India

It seems Pakistan govt is not going to play Kashmir politics when discussing a vital issue as transit facilities among all the SAARC countries. If what the article above says is correct, then Islamabad is waiting for the Indian nod of a Dhaka-Delhi-Lahore link before it opens its border for Indian goods to enter Afghanistan.

However, I do not think Pakistan will allow Indian goods to the central asia or Iran via Pakistan. While Afghanistan is a SAARC country, Central asian countries and Iran are not. So, these different issues may be dealt separately out of SAARC jurisdiction.

By the way, BD is giving something to India in one hand, but, at the same time, is asking for reciprocals in two hands. Note that a link will boost trade between BD and Pakistan by many folds. We need many Pakistani goods including your beautifully designed women's clothings and delicious fruits. I cannot wait longer.

Being wrapped by Bharati Kombol, it doesn't matter how much the puppet GOB ask from its Bharati master, because the mastery TRICKS TRICKLE DOWN to puppets. Thus PAK/GOP should no way fall into the trap of AWAMY malauns. If it happens then like ISROs are selling staff to ARABS/Muslims by putting Turkey's level, Bharati would sell theirs to Pakistanis by using BD's level.

I'm interested in visa free traveling. It's like one country. Then we will enjoy their deserts, rocks and snow where they can see our longest straight beach, CHT, and Sundorbons. Just get in the plane and no visa hassle for 30 days for the citizens of both counrties.

Play a poker game here---Just my opinion!!!!

Attach transit issue with Kashmir resolution with India. Bangladesh will ask India for trade route afterwards--India denies, strain on the relationship--India accepts, BD thrives as we will give them the trade route.

India will suffer set back either way.

What do you think?

Brother,

Until both country's Bio-Metric data bases become flawless and each-other exchange it with very good faith, it's risky to have visa free system since conniving malauns would infiltrate and sabotage our good intentions by bad deeds, thanks.
