Dhaka Seeks Transit to Pakistan via India

Well I did not know Bengalis in Karachi are considered as refugee. They were there since the time of British. Arent they Pakistani citizen?

They aren't refuges, they are illegal immigrants:
Immigrants from South Asia make up a growing proportion of immigrants in Pakistan. The five largest immigrant groups in Pakistan are in turn Afghans[5], Bangladeshi[6], Tajiks, Uzbeks, Iranians, Biharis, Burmese[7][8] and Britons[9] including a sizeable number of those of Pakistan origin.

Pakistani officials arrested more than 2,000 illegal Bangladeshi workers in Karachi:
Pakistan arrested or detained nearly 2,000 Bangladeshis the week of October 23 as the government imposed new rules to reduce illegal immigrants in Karachi, where they are considered a "security risk." The government considers illegal immigrants a threat because of their involvement in drug trafficking and weapons and they are a drain on the country's limited social services and jobs.

Illegal immigrants make up about 16 percent of Karachi's 12 million inhabitants. About 80 percent of the immigrants are from Bangladesh.

Work at the Karachi Harbor has come to a near standstill because more than 10,000 Bangladeshis, representing more than 60 percent of the harbor workforce, have avoided work since October 21 for fear of being arrested.

To assure you that no Bangladeshi will opt for Pakistan as I speak now.

if that were the case then there would not be 2,000,000 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Karachi alone.

There are plenty of Pakistani working in Bangladesh infact a whole bunch.

Are they there illegally? Are they cheating the Bangladeshi government? And how many Pakistanis are working in Bangladesh both legally and illegally?

I don't support this Transit deal and neither should any other Pakistani. Pakistan already has a considerable illegal Bangali population in Karachi and the last thing we need is more illegal's pouring into Pakistan by the thousands. We already have around 2 million illegal Bangalis and add to that the 4-5 million Afghan refuges, more illegal immigrants are only going to strain our economy, increase the burden on the infrastructure of our cities and add to the pollution.

I apologize if i offended any Bangalis but this is the reality.

I support you on illegal immigrants issue, every illegal immigrant should be treaty as any other Pakistani illegal immigrant is treated around the world. Afghans should go back home now i strongly support this. On the issue of bengalis, well most of them claim that they had their family or business links here pre-71, so they claim to be Pakistani nationals, most of them.
But trade via train i think would be too difficult and unsafe for all. India ofcourse will get higher transit fee as compared to pakistan or BD If we allow them the same facility through our land. 2ndly india will be complaining every next day about terrorist threads or immigrants issue If this transit route is opened. so better buildup some confidance and have some trust then we can think of this.

By the way, other than finance and project related issues; has there been any work on addressing the potential security challenges over this transit? Better do it now :coffee:

i'm sorry but that doesn't justify illegally working in a country and cheating the government of the host country and neither does that make them Pakistani citizens.

The transit through train is impossible due to numerous reasons (you yourself have mentioned a few of them) and even if it were possible it would be of no benefit to Pakistan.

if that were the case then there would not be 2,000,000 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in Karachi alone.

Large number of them stayed back after the separation and rest has gone during 70's and 80's because we really had a crappie economy compare to the then Pakistan. Right now a Bangladeshi will not go to Pakistan for seeking work unless they have family member living in Karachi.

Bye the way, people like Alamgir, Hasan Jahangir are also Bangladeshi origin.

HOw is it draining your resouces? We havent received a single penny from India. But in the other hand a lot of BD thinks Hindus in BD makes money here and build houses in Calcutta. Thats why, they enacted a law called Vested Property act even though I dont support it.

@ This was common in 90s in Bangladesh. I have visited all most all the districts of Bangladesh. One thing I find common that in the district town the properties belonging to the Hindus looks very old and no renovation is done. They some how pass the days and preserve the money and silently send it to their relative some where near to Calcutta where they build a good house or business centres and one fine morning he himself is missing after taking a huge loan from the govt. "Ye silsila chalta arahahey, buhat din she"

i see Pakistan faces the same problem from illegal Bangladeshi immigrants like India. Its quite unfortunate their govt does nothing to rein their people in.

I agree with you. Illegal immigrant should be sent back to their respective country. But in case of Bengalis in Karachi or elsewhere in Pakistan, there is a grey area which needs to be addressed.

If somebody claim that they were living there before 1971 and shown allegiance to Pakistan after the war then they are Pakistani citizen and Bangladesh will have no reason the take responsibility of them. Bangladesh repatriated more than 400,000 Bengalis right after the war as they shown allegiance to Bangladesh.

Dont you think its weired to have 2-3 million Bengalis (illegal) popped up in the middle of Karachi from nowhere if they were not living there before 1971? Besides they were taken under the patronization of pre 1971 Pakistani government and not their fault.

Same goes for stranded Pakistani here in Bangladesh. Those who shown allegiance to Bangladesh became the bonafide citizen of Bangladesh. But the people who opted for West Pakistan never taken care of and eventually they faught to stay back here and became the citizen of Bangladesh. You can come and talk to any refugee whether they want to go back any more not.

It depends, its not only connecting BD and Pakistan rather connecting PK-India-Nepal-Bangladesh. I think cumalative trade could make this route viable.

Large number of them stayed back after the separation and rest has gone during 70's and 80's because we really had a crappie economy compare to the then Pakistan.

I'm not talking about the ones that stayed back and retained their Pakistani nationality, i'm talking about the illegal migrants from Bangladesh that are coming to Pakistan after 1971.

Right now a Bangladeshi will not go to Pakistan for seeking work unless they have family member living in Karachi.

That doesn't make sense, even "if" they "had" a family member in Karachi why would they come to Pakistan and then stay there illegally? Wouldn't it make sense to just visit and then go back to Bangladesh rather than stay in Karachi (or any part of Pakistan) illegally and not go back to Bangladesh?

Bye the way, people like Alamgir, Hasan Jahangir are also Bangladeshi origin.

Key word is "Origin", which means they have been living in Pakistan before 1971.

BD take responsibilty of its citizen not every Bengali or Muslim in the world. If they were our citizen then I personally will fight for him to bring him back. Take my word.

@ You have only one vote that too Sk Hasina has snatched away by deleting the 13 th amendment of the constitution of Care Taker Govt. So.........!!!!!!!!! doubts.....

@ Presently you are settled in USA. I have a doubt ? Are you a voter of Bangladesh ? Do you have your National ID ?

I agree that those who stayed back in Pakistan and retained their Pakistani citizenship are Pakistanis, but those Bangalis who have come to Pakistan after 1971 are illegals. Bangladeshis have been entering Pakistan through legal means but stay illegally. A Bangali member on another thread even mentioned that many Bangladeshis go to Pakistan on travel visa but never come back.

Dont you think its weired to have 2-3 million Bengalis (illegal) popped up in the middle of Karachi from nowhere if they were not living there before 1971?

We are not discussing about the Bangalis who have been residing in Pakistan pre 1971, we're discussing illegal Bangladeshi migrants who arrived in Pakistan after 1971 and are living and working in Pakistan illegally.

My knowledge regarding this particular area is limited however even i can tell that this proposal will not be viable due to many reasons.

If you accept this fact then the problem is not as severe as you speak. Seen in documentary that 15% living in Bengali colony are infact Burmese.

There are some people who fled after the backlash and riots of post 1971 returned as they dont have anything back in Bangladesh as they gone there permanently.

There is another group of people who used Pakistan as route to middle east could have stuck there as well. And there is another group who did gone to Pakistan lured by some brokers who found it a lucrative business to trafic stranded pakistanis here. As no more stranded Pakistanis interested to go to Pakistan then they turned to Bengalis and lured them with making money like Middle East in Pakistan. They even offer them that they could eventually go to Europe through Iran. This is not only the problem of Bangladesh but a global problem and I am sure plenty of Pakistanis fell prey to those kind of evil business.

That is not true. In your earlier posts you bashed all of 2 million Bengalis are illegal.

True, but they should be deported back to Bangladesh.

be careful with the words you use because i never bashed them and neither did i say anything wrong. Yes i said 2 million illegal Bangalis, did i say something wrong?

This news is from 1995 and back then there were an estimated 1.2 million illegal Bangladeshi migrants in Karachi:
Police in Karachi estimate that up to 20 percent of the city's 10 million residents are illegal aliens. An estimated 1.2 million are Bangladeshis, followed by 200,000 Burmese, and 84,000 Afghans.
